  • Harry Winter (born Horst Winter) performing "Und jetzt ist es still", with the Wiener Tanzorchester. Song written by Hans Lang (music) and Erich Meder (lyrics) © 1948 Austroton.
Betty Hutton covered this song in 1951 with "It's oh so quiet" (arrangement and English lyrics by Bert Reisfeld), that was covered in turn by Björk in 1995 with the same title.
    Very rare recording, enjoy ;)
Please note: UA-cam keeps deleting randomly, with no reason and without notice, comments from videos. I've noticed it both with mine and yours, some of them even quite interesting and absolutely not offending anyone nor violating the platform's rules. I fear it is a widespread problem, a serious one in my opinion, still I'm reporting it because some interactions appear meaningless, while I always answer to everybody. We just have to take the screenshot way.

This is a waltz, where as Hutton's version is swing. So it's 3/4 transferred to 4/4 which gives the song a radical makeover. It is hard to believe that Hutton's version is only three years later, it sounds light years apart.

The Betty Hutton track is, and always has been, entitled "It's Oh So Quiet!" It was mislabeled on one foreign CD release, and that mistake keeps getting passed around. Also, all copies of the Hutton track on UA-cam (or on CD for that matter) run a bit too fast. Keep this in mind when comparing her version with Bjork's.
Also ... Try a UA-cam search for the Heinz Huppertz recording of this song. Much better quality, and (if its description is correct) it's an earlier version than this one.

The Heinz Huppertz recording is likely from 1948 or 1949, not 1946 as the UA-cam description says. If, as written in the description, that disc was released in 1946, it would likely be the original version of this song. When you search on Discogs for the Odeon label and sort by catalogue number ( label/33930-Odeon?page=383 ), you will see that last preceding disc with known release year with a lower catalogue number was released in 1948 and the first disc with known release year with a higher one in 1949. The disc was therefore likely released either 1948 or 1949 and not the original recording of this song.

What does the title mean translated into English - It's Oh So Quiet, right?

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 7 років тому +12

"And now it's quiet", an obscured political song.
Musically the US versions are both better. But that here was the local taste at that time, and also the sarcastic messages in the lyrics were typical. It is amazing how they managed to bring sense into pop music. What do we have today? Music bare of any art or meaning, except extracting money form the masses.

Hey, in the first part of the song he sings about "the society of coziness" that starts to sing their anthem. At first quietly about the calmness, then loudly about an uproar. it ends with "and you can continue this game for as long as you want". given that in 1948 germany was still in shambles after ww2, i don't think it's too far a stretch to interpret this as satire: people will keep starting wars over and over again and never learn how pointless they are

@Dick Dangle Listen to the version by Betty Hutton ua-cam.com/video/0Ojarj6nTM4/v-deo.html .
There was a video that showed her in a show, it's taken down it seems. When I see her performing with her dance moves and mimics I prefer to have all these Billy Eilishes disappear into the dustbin.
(The US version however has been changed to a love and hate song. The German original is about the Germans after the war.)
Here is a small one that shows what I mean about her performing skills ua-cam.com/video/Pz7dZ9Q3K-E/v-deo.html

When a song is covered in another language the lyrics can change completely. It's still a cover. For example Vicky Leandros' "Apres toi" is originally a sad love song about her having lost her lover. In German it's covered as "Dann kamst du" with cheerful lyrics about the joy of having found her dream man.
