Snickers the Porcupine in the gift store!

- We gave Snickers the porcupine a nice little break from his home in the snow so he could come romp around inside the gift store here at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage, AK on 11/05/2011.
Sadly, on December 30th, 2019, Snickers passed away at his home at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage, AK. He was a cute little guy with a fun personality and will be missed. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Good job he doesn't chew holes in everything like my bunnies - I've got holes in t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, pants, socks - you name it! One of them especially likes to chew pieces off leather shoes. I have to be very careful where I put anything.

If there wasn't the threat of pain from quills I would so pick snickers up & give him a hug he's so cute, & the noises when he's eating are too funny.

They poo a lot in their dens. I’m not making up, either-do a Google image search for “porcupine den” and everything outside (and much of what’s inside) is covered with a heap of porcupine turds. I guess the reason they do that is no animal in its right mind is going to try to claw a porcupine out of its den-so they make no effort to hide their home's location (or its smell).

Good Lord, that's one of the cutest things I've ever seen. What a cute puff ball! Is avocado his favorite food? Do his quills only come out when he feels.threatened? Maybe you can make a short video teaching us all about occupies?
Cat and Caboodle I did a book report on porcupines in Jr. High. the quills are hollow, and sometimes come out when they shake, like he did in this video. That is probably where the myth that they "throw" their quills comes from. They like salty stuff, so if you leave your axe out, you might find the handle all chewed up in the morning. They chew the wood to get the salt from your sweat. I didn't know they smelled bad, but it would obviously be impossible to give them a bath.
When they are threatened, they turn their back to the threat and sort of puff out their fur (and quills). that way if a predator gets too close, they get a face full of quills. The quills have barbs on them, sort of like fish hooks, only all around. So the quills will work their way into the flesh of whatever they hit. You can't get them out. Think of shark teeth, rows going into the mouth, it would be hard to pull food out of that mouth. The quills can eventually work their way into a vital organ and kill the animal.
At summer camp one year, I was sick in the infirmary during a campout. I heard that one girl had a porcupine crawl into her sleeping bag for warmth during the night. She got one in the knee. Best to get the quill out as soon as possible.

That's him! But he had just eaten an apple when I video'd him, so he was more wound-up. More sugar than an avocado! He is adorable, tho! I'm surprised she moved her hand forward when petting him; I did that and got stuck! And it hurts!

my kitty likes chewing holes in wabbits and squirrels,he is a bad kitty cat but he will follow me around like a dog does when i walk.he was abandoned by a previous tenant and really doesn't like the indoors a whole lot unfortunately.
PLEASE bring him inside anyway, if you love him. Cats are so unsafe outside due to vehicles, predators and diseases. Outdoor cats live approximately half as long as indoor cats. He'll complain bitterly for 30 days or so, but will come to enjoy the extra attention, playtime, snacks, comfort and safety indoors. Also be sure he's neutered. So many homeless kitties.

The quills are there, but mostly hidden underneath the fur.

He has quills what you are seeing are guard hairs that cover the quils, for him to present his quills all he has to do is contract the muscles on his back & they would be quite visible it's quite funny to see them do that.
