I’m in the US, and oddly enough my Pen F came from your stomping grounds, Australia. The guy ran a photography school and had 3. It had been on the shelf as a backup and had 800 clicks on it. We messaged back and forth on eBay and I paid about $950 USD, but it is pristine. Wouldn’t take twice that for it.

I picked up the GX-9 with a 12-32 zoom just a year ago on eBay for $450 in excellent condition. Glad I jumped on that deal when I did. I love that camera!

Just a couple of years ago the PEN F cameras used were going for around $700.00 US. I was waiting for them to get down to around $550 -$600 and would have purchased 2 of them both blk and silver finish. However, unfortunately everybody and their mother started making UA-cam videos on this camera and why should you get one. Then the prices for used went up... up... up same for old film cameras as well. As soon as the Hipsters finds out about something they all run out in droves to snap it up and cause prices to go through the roof. So... thanks a lot Mr. Grant and all those other UA-camrs like you.

I have a GX9, two GX8s and a GX85 (currently on loan to my son). They are still my EDC/Street/Travel cameras of choice. I don’t understand Panasonic’s reluctance to revive/update these bodies. A GX8 with the updated internals of a GX9 and flip-up LCD configuration of Lumix S1 series would be the perfect photo focused camera.

Hey Grant, I agree with the message on your video. The prices have gone to the roof for both of these models!
Luckily for me, I recently found a mint condition GX9 with the 12-32 kit lens for a decent price (600 USD) and I immediately grabbed it!
    With that addition I now have 5 M43s cameras! G9, GX8, GX8, Olympus Pen-F and Olympus EM-10 Mk II (a gem of a camera!).

I managed to pick up my GX9 recently from MPB in the UK. MBP currently have 6 GX9 bodies with prices from £575 - £600 as Ebay has fewer ads for this camera. I also picked up an LX100ii which cost even more - another camera that is back in demand and also a great camera. The GX9 is like a mini Leica Q and of course the LX100ii is also a Leica DLUX 7! Camera manufacturer's take note and make more of this style camera ........

The only M43 unicorn camera I have managed to get my hands on so far is the GM5. Pen-F one day, if I can ever bring myself to pay the $1000-1200 USD that they are currently selling for where I live. I feel like the price of used M43 gear in general keeps going up.

There are still a few GX9's available in the UK, MPB has 9 up as we speak, but the Pen F is getting hard to find. Prices are high, as you say. High prices draws one or two out occasionally, but MPB want £900 for a slightly tatty one and north of £1000 for a clean boxed one. I was a total muppet and sold my original Pen F a while back, but repurchased it (at a higher price😵‍💫) last week. Its a bit of a punt on OM System not releasing a version ii, but given the version 1 fell short of profit expectations, I don't see the venture capital company risking a version ii release, or even if they do, they will probably look for ways to cheapen the build. The original one was exquisite, hewn from a solid block of Aluminium I believe and basically full metal construction (except for the battery cover). I think they are largely in the hands of collectors now.

Purchased my GX9 in 2019 for $608 aussie dollars. I thought it was a bargain at the time and can’t believe it has appreciated in value. My first M43 was a GF1 which I passed on to a niece for Xmas. Bought the GX9 for the occasions where I want something small and discrete with small prime lens and don’t want to carry a large body which at the time was a GH5. 100% agree the GX9 and the 15/1.7 are a match made in heaven too. One thing I noticed is that back around this time period (2018-19) Panasonic lenses / cameras in Australia were far cheaper than the US. that is if a lens in Australia was 800 AUD the same lens in the US would be about 800 USD despite the Aussie dollar being lower than the greenback. These were happy days. Keep up the great content!

Back in 2018 bought a new GX85 with kit lens for A$625. The G9 & GX9 had just been released so the GX85 was in a run out sale. This was my first introduction to MFT. As a consequence of loving the format I picked up a new Pen-F body in 2020 for A$1100 and a boxed GX9 body for A$600 on eBay. Agree the LUMIX Summilux f1.7/15mm is a great lens, especially in combo with these camera bodies.

I’ve been watching the GX85 go up in price here in the US (on the West Coast) and JUST 2 YEARS AGO they were only $300 used and the 2 lens kit (12-32 and 45-150) would actually go on sale on Amazon for $597!! In the last year (interestingly starting after Panasonic announced they were not planning to continue with the small photo-centric m43 cameras) the used price went from that $300 to $400 over 6 months or so…then to $500 just this month!
I think there are 2 audiences interested:
    1. The still photography (street photography) crowd
    2. The low budget filmmaking crowd
The first crowd appreciates both the GX9 and the GX85…but the second (Budget filmmakers on UA-cam, etc.) criticized the extra crop in 4K video mode on the GX9😢
The GX85 has been my main budget filmmaking camera for a while and the biggest reason I still prefer them is because I can use a TILT/SHIFT adapter (because the rangefinder style body allows the lens to move up and down without hitting the pop up flash which makes it not work on the G85/G95, etc.)

I have a GX9 (and a GX85) and think the S9 would have been better as an updated version of either one of those. I know Panasonic really wants to push ahead with full frame, but for their target market, MFT would be so much better. Stylish and easy to carry everywhere with an already developed line of good, compact lenses. Leave the design of the cameras virtually the same and update the guts with the 25MP PDAF sensor, newer processing engine to handle the Lumix Lab app and real time LUTs, OLED EVF instead of the one that color streaks when you move your eyeball, and add a button to access the real time LUTs. Release that camera with a newer, faster version of the collapsible 12-32mm pancake lens and it would check all of the boxes and address all of the complaints about the older versions. Vloggers and "lifestyle" photographers would love it. A stylish magnesium top to the case, more premium feeling buttons and dials, and a few color options for the skin would sell like crazy!

    • @tommym6248
      @tommym6248 14 днів тому +1

Also, the MFT sensor can run longer on video without overheating. The magnesium case I mentioned in my main post would help act as a heat sink for the sensor. Plenty of record time for vloggers.

You can still easily get a GX9 in Europe (at MPB - not sponsored). For a good condition camera you will pay nearly as much as new when they were still in sale.
As for the GX9 II/GX10 I am confident one will come eventually. The GX9 came out of production in october and 6 months later we got the S9.
They probably used the line for small cameras for the S9 in their factory. They just can't produce a GX right now. In a year at most we should see that GX we are hoping for.
Aother reason: a recent stat (got it from M43rumors) is showing that the G100 is selling great in Japan. And somebody from Panasonic USA said last year that the G100 was doing well.

Good points Grant. I never guessed we'd see a increase in prices like this on old Panasonic Cameras. I checked prices on GX8 used prices and they are asking as much as I bought mind that was the last new open box model over 5 years ago. Of course U.S. dollars have been diluted to 1/3 than 5 years ago, so even at current prices perhaps the Pen and Gx9 are a reasonable value. As prices are up on the Gx8 and down on the GH5 Mk1 Perhaps I should sell the GX8 as it's about the the same or more than a GX5. I'd prefer the GX5 II but prices are about double that of the GX5 MK1, which seems like a good value.

Even thinking on bringing either the GM1 (it was in japanese but just activated all languages following the instructions on ua-cam.com/video/qYklHvupE7o/v-deo.html as it works on both GM1 and GM5) or the beautiful red GM5 as pocket cameras.

gx9 is like $800+ in US resellers like mpb. Nuts right?? GX85 cheaper yet still higher than priced NEW.
