I love the sidesword!
It doesn't get much attention online, making this video all the more special.
Poor smallsword...
Welll, if you are not going to carry a 42 inch blade, a 32 inch will have to do.
Honestly, thats kinda why I want one
A 42 inch blade sounds great until you actually have to carry it around.
As city life increased, the longer blade was replaced by a shorter one. Head out to the country, better get the longer blade back on, @@knightshousegames
a classic Dark Souls. Parry with a dagger. Still medium shields have better parry window.
whenever I think about playing with a dagger designed like that, rather than a buckler... I just envision my fingers laying on the ground lol.
Now my Cinquedea behind a Dhal (Indian/Arabian style buckler with leather straps instead of a rigid grip)... that's different story.
Target Shield bro. Target shield.
Blocking is for cowards. Parry and Riposte all day.
I wish I could have done HEMA.
Was the sidesword used in real life? If so, when and in what context?
Same contexts as the rapier. A civilian and military sidearm.
Sideswords were primarily Military use because it can both cut and thrust unlike the rapier (See: Munich Town Guard Sidesword).
A way to differentiate Sideswords from Rapiers is the blade itself. The blade of a sidedword is shorter, but thicker to do cut and thrusts and is tapered while the Rapier has long and slender blade, which is just for thrusting.
Both Sideswords and Rapiers have complex swept hilts that people might confuse one from the other.
You can still do hema! Find a local hema school near you!
Sideswords evolve out of medieval arming swords. Today we love to have very strict classifications of swords but thats not how it would have been in the time these were used. The difference between a late arming sword and early sidesword, and a late sidesword with a rapier, is difficult to say.
Sideswords as we use the term would have been used in the late medieval period unto the Renaissance
The mighty wiley and handy side sword!! En garde!
Very cool.
from which maker are these sideswords? :D
🌹👍
so that is how you use a lefthand dagger
throwing it to the enemy can be a option as well!
First!
