I drew on surviving spouse benefit after he passed. But ten years later I go a polite letter from Social security that I could get money. Which was significant amount more. So I switched to my record. Thank you Social security
Rules about Social Security are constantly changing.
If you are divorced, you don’t get your ex’s benefit anymore. He has to actually receive benefits, then you get 1/2 the difference between his benefit and your benefit. Woe betide women who divorce late in life. Elderly wives who dedicated their lives to their children and a husband (who did not want them to work) sometimes get less than $900 a month in social security.
My mom was able to get a spousal benefit as she did not have her own and she gets $300/month.
@@alexbay5347 What a paltry amount! That’s criminal. Being a mom violates so many OSHA and fair labor laws. I always discourage women from being stay-at-home moms. If we had universal pensions, this wouldn’t happen.
