Today we're sharing our recent pickups from our trip to Santa Fe (and a couple from prior to that even). Enjoy! ☕
I just started my second read of the Vampire Chronicles (I didn't get through all of it last time)! I'm reading Interview with the Vampire now! I remember liking the Vampire Lestat (the 2nd book in the series) way more than Interview, so I'm excited to get to that one again. There's also a newer show on AMC and Mayfair Witches which is a 3 book series that ties into the V Chronicles. I've didn't get to them on my first read.
Oh wow! That's great. I just started last night. So far so good.
Lucky You, the unabridged edition of "The Stand"...I loved it..the best! His other book "Christine" ....to this day when I see a Black Plymouth I scream! ha
😂😂😂. I love that.
OMG I love that you refer to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey 😂 We are an AC family too. My kid learned SO MUCH about Egypt, the people and culture, from playing the game!
That's great! We are totally assassin's Creed nerds. Played all the games. ❤️❤️❤️
@@GoodBooksLately As you should
There are so many book stores in Santa Fe. There was Geronimo's, Book Mountain, Beastley, Op.Cit, and in Albuquerque there is Page One and Title Wave.
I guess we will have to go back. 😁😁😁
Always happy to see a new podcast episode. Looking forward to listening while I wash the dishes 😊(The “real life” interruptions are cute!)
Love that! Hope you enjoy it! 😁❤️
Great haul guys!
Taylor, I couldn't read the first Outlander book until I watched the show. Something about the Scottish words was difficult for me. I suggest giving it another shot, because the books are fabulous!
Brandon, the Stand is one of my favorite Stephen King books!
I have to say that his vampires weren't my favorite though. Now Anne Rice's vampires, yes indeed! Have fun guys, these are some great books! ❤
Thank you, and we are already enjoying our reads. We will certainly report back.
Lord, I read The Stand when it first came out. When they re-released it with a million added pages, I threw my hands in the air! I mean, I want him to tell the story the way he wants, but I'd just invested A LOT of time in the original. Otherwise, another great post! I was interrupted a lot and wondered if I'd get to finish...I did. Thanks for sharing!
I totally get that. 😂 Thanks for the support. ❤️❤️
Fabulous book haul. Always great to see a video from you both. I'm starting Clytemnestra soon. I hope I like it more than you did, Tayler.
I hope so too! 😂😂😂
Haruki Murakami is one of my all time favourite authors and Kafka on the Shore is one of his best. Good choice!
That's the word on the street. Excited to get a start on it. 😁😁😁
I love just sitting down and listening to you guys talk 🥰
Gotta watch Interview with a vampire!
Ah, thank you. We plan on watching it once we both finish the book.
Salem's Lot was the first SK book I ever read (when it first came out a LONG time ago). Reread it several years ago. Same for IWTV. Reread it right before the movie came out. I thought the movie was pretty true to the book, though they did make Claudia older. She was MUCH younger in the book 😳. The new IWTV series on AMC is really good. The first season is on Netflix now. Reworked quite a bit of it, but still keeps true to the core of the book. I've read pretty much all of SK except for the Dark Tower books.
So wonderful to hear. Excited for them both. 😁❤️😁
I read Salem's Lot when I was a teen in the 80's. I literally just watched the TV movie this evening (HBO Max). Totally forgot James Mason was in it. Currently in the middle of Needful Things.
Lots of good books! I am still listening to Lost Queen and reading Nettle and Bone, A Cautious Traveller’s Guide to the Wastelands, and Lady Macbeth (an imagined history of how she became a villain).
Oh man, The Stand is quite a ride! I went through many different emotions/opinions while reading. It’s good, enjoy!
Salem's Lot, The Stand, Interview with the vampire, 3 of my favorites! Medusa sounds good, i love mythology but I'll wait to see what you have to say about it first Tayler lol. Great haul, cool bookstores! 📚❤️🩹🎃
Awesome! We are eager to dig into them. ❤️😁❤️
Ohhh I’ll def have to go check out Copper Cat books! Glad you had a good time in Santa Fe!
loved the Stand back in 1979. I so wonder what could have been added. Saw 2001 back the first night it came out in San francisco. We all took a lovely drug and had the best time. The movie wasn't boring at all. Would not recommend my way of see the movie. I stopped messing around much in my 20's but there were some fun times. I am 75 now and have great memories of San Francisco back in the day. The Stand did include Las Vegas.
I love this. Thanks for sharing.
I just love Bookman's! I frequent the Tucson locations often and have also been to the one in Flagstaff. The Lost Queen is on my shelf! I think I need to get started soon if Book 3 is being released soon. 😊 Happy Spooky season reading, you two!
Thank you. Bookman's was such a joy. Wish we had something like that closer to us. 😁
I think independent book stores are sooooo cool. I can't wait until my husband and I go on our next road trip, just so I can scope out some book stores. Hey, have you been to Powell's in Portland, OR? Oh, that place is a must stop, for sure.
Totally! And I believe we have, but it was a long time ago. We will have to go back to really appreciate it.
I'm reading Iron Gold by Pierce Brown and Game Changer by Alley Ciz. I recently bought Yo, Pol Rubio by Hector Lozano (he's a writer whose books I like), Of the bench by Alley Ciz and Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life by James Blake and Andrew Friedman ( Blake is a former tennis player that I saw at Roland-Garros and I liked the way he played)
That's great. Sounds like some good reads. ❤️❤️❤️
Branden, I follow you on goodreads and feel like we have similar tastes in books. 🤘🏻 Sweet. The Monster of Florence is really good. Reminds me of the Zodiac Killer.
Oh yeah! That's great. I'm itching to get into it. 😁❤️😁
Read both unabridged The Stand and Swan Song and both are amazing! I had someone tell me about the Rage book and I looked and I have the paperback in good shape that includes it so I immediately got a book preserving bag to protect it 😂.
😮 Wow. That's great. I will certainly be picking up swan song soon.
Salem's Lot was the first Stephen King book that I read!
Love the scary picks! I can't wait to read Bringer of Dust.
I'm going to read The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson now.
Yay! That's great! ❤️❤️❤️
If you like interesting tone travel try Lightning by Dean Koontz. Stephen King is always a good choice and The Stand is my all time favorite.
I actually just picked up a book by Dean Koontz, Odd Thomas. Looking to read it very soon.
OMG - I have read, listened to and watched Interview with the Vampire so many times!
I tried to listen to it years after reading and watching it and it scared me so bad I had to stop listening to it. Weird. I really liked the book and movie.
I got the same exact copy of The Stand as well as a paperback copy of 'Salem's Lot last month. Huge Stephen King fan, I will be reading The Dark Tower series next year, in addition to 33 of his other works recommended as companion reading to the series. Some will be rereads, but I'm real excited to begin my 2025 TBR list!
Wow! That's great. I'm sure you will enjoy the journey. ❤️👍❤️
Old enough to have read Interview with a Vampire when it was first published - still have my copy! And I still go back and reread it, made a lasting impression, it was so totally different from anything that was written at that time. And to Branden - thanks for the recommendation of The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi! Totally enjoyed that and want to now read her earlier series while waiting for Book 2 of this series.
That's great! So glad you enjoyed The Adventures of Amina al-Sarfi. Such a wonderful story. ❤️❤️❤️
Like you, I like to read time travel books. Two really good ones are Kindred by Octavia E. Butler and The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.
Ooooh, thanks for the great recs. We will have to check those out for sure. ❤️❤️
Taylor, have you read, The Time Traveler’s Wife? It’s one of my favorite books and obviously has to do with time travel.
Not sure if she has read it, but I think she has watched the movie. I'll let her know she needs to read it. 👍😁👍
I’m the same as you, Tayler. I love watching Outlander, but trying to get through the books for me was like wading through sludge. I wish I could do it but gave up after about the fourth book.
Perfectly put. 😁❤️😁
I tried reading Outlander and put it aside and DNF'd it, years went by and I saw the show and got the book out and finished it. Show was better. It seems weird because so many people love the books.
I read Interview With A Vampire right before the movie came out in the 90s. I loved it and was worried the movie wouldn't do it justice but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on both the book and the movie. I don't know how you left that last used bookstore with only two books....I think I would have to move in there!
It was tough. I wanted so many, but in the end there wasn't room in the car. 😂😂😂
I really enjoyed Interview w/ a Vampire both ways. I did try to listen to it on tape and it scared me and I had to stop listening to it. That was something I didn't expect.
Oh wow. Spooky.
Hi there good to see you both. Artificial Wisdom is a great read
I just reread The Lost Queen in prep for book 3 release in Dec and I loved it just as much as I did the first time. What a fantastic tale!
That's great. Love hearing that. 👍❤️
I have The Lost Queen. I had heard Signe Pike on a podcast & her discussion was fabulous!
Oh that’s great to know! Thank you!
Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are mostly great, especially the first 3! Some of the spinoff stories are really good, as well. I especially enjoyed Armand and Pandora.
Yes! Love to hear it. ❤️❤️❤️
I think I read The Stand first, then Salem's Lot, when I was around 15. I would definitely have read the first edition of The Stand, so perhaps it's timenI read the updated edition. ❤
Go for it! 👍👍
I LOVED salems lot! I’m not a jumpy person but his descriptions are so well written there’s parts my heart was pounding along with the characters 😂 and as for the stand it’s giant n takes some reading but totally worth it, you guys are making me want to dig out my Stephen kings books again 😂
I’ve heard the same thing about Salem’s Lot being so spooky that it had people on the edge of their seats and all but actually jump scared them, which is nothing less than I would expect from the Kingster. I’m excited to dive in!
@@GoodBooksLately there’s a part with stairs…. You’ll know when u read it, it had me jumping but unable to put the book down! Enjoy it’s truly a great horror book perfect for spooky season!
The Lost Queen looks fantastic! I just finished re-reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron; it's such a great book! I'm so glad I read it again.
I NEED to reread Shadow of the Wind. That was such a magical experience the first time around. ❤️
Great books as usual.
So, I think the Welsh pronounce it "Myrthen".
If I understand correctly, it's a small hawk or falcon.
🤔 good to know. Thanks. 👍❤️👍
Interview and 'Salem's Lot - decades after I red them - reminded on my favorite books of all time list. As does The Stand, which I originally read in a book club edition when published, so I have yet to read the restored version. To me, The Stand remains his best book, 'Salem's Lot his scariest.
That's some great praise. Love it. Sounds like Tayler is getting into the deep end with her start of King. 👍👍👍
Time travel? Just started Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. Love her writing
I’ve heard this is a great one!
Still re-reading Anna Karenina (I LOVE this book) but it’s slow going because I’m trying to get some knit and crochet projects done and I can’t multi task those). I can’t remember if I read The Stand or just saw the mini series. 🤔 I originally come from Oregon where we have Powell’s Books, well worth a trip to Portland to peruse the books in that bookstore. (Largest used bookstore in the world). Thanks for sharing your finds! 🌸🌼🌻🌵
Yes! We have visited Portland before our boys were born, and I remember Powell Books. Would love to go back. ❤️❤️
@@GoodBooksLately I don’t know if they still have a separate book store called Powell’s Books for Cooks. That was another fave when I cooked for a living. 😀
The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino is an all-time favorite -- I have Invisible Cities but havent read it yet. Looking forward to what you think of it.
Oh cool. You'll certainly here how it goes when I get to it.
I read Salem’s Lot as a teenager in high school decades ago and it scared me so much I never read another Stephen King book. I can only handle Twilight vampires. 😂😂
😂😂😂 Well Tayler is about halfway through now. She's liking it so far, hopefully it doesn't end up scaring her away from more King.
I read a number of these in my teens and 20s .. it would be fun to revisit 2001 a Space Odyssey and Interview with a Vampire ... or at least revisit the movies!
You totally should! 👍😁👍
I’m a big Stephen King fan. I started reading his books in the ‘70s when I was probably way too young to do so (pre-teen & early teen). Of those early books, The Shining is my all time favorite. The next would be The Dead Zone. Tayler, if you like realistic time traveling stories that might be up your alley. It’s not technically time traveling, but the main character wakes from a long coma with a new psychic ability. I don’t want to say more but it might be something you would like. I remember being pretty scared reading ‘Salem’s Lot. With all of that said, I picked up The Stand when I was probably 12 or 13 and I couldn’t get into it. I was probably way too young for it to grab me. I’ve never returned to it, but I’m curious to hear what you think of it Branden. I’ve also read Interview With A Vampire. I loved it!
Wow! Love your knowledge and thanks for sharing your experience. You will certainly hear our takes as we have them. 😁
Douglas Preston has done numerous collabs with another author “Preston & Child” I have read numerous of their books highly recommend. I think I’m going to put this one by Douglas Preston on my to read list sounds very good
Oh wow! Didn't know that was the same Preston. Really cool. 👍👍👍
The Odd Thomas series is good, I prefer some of his others
I know my mother in law recommended the Odd Thomas series, so I figured it only right to start there.
Love Anne Rice!
Kafka on the Shore... The only book I have literally thrown across the room...
😮. And why is that?
@@GoodBooksLately It's hard to explain without possibly spoiling the story (I obviously didn't finish, so don't know how important it is)... Let's just say that I'm usually pretty hardened to things that happen in fiction, but this "thing" almost made me vomit and ended up giving me nightmares for a few weeks. It's good that I found my limit, but I'll never pick up a Murakami book again.
Oh wow. Intriguing. I'll let you know what I think when I read it.
@@GoodBooksLately I don't think you'll have a problem... It's something that I take very badly in real life as well!
Hello. I noticed the Bandelier shirt right away. Did you visit Los Alamos too? The bookstore your brother (in-law) told you about might have been op-cit in the DeVargas Mall. It's not for the faint of heart. I've never been to the Garcia St bookstore but will pay a visit very soon.
We drove through. Didn't get to stop as we were trying to make a dinner reservation. That sounds like the book store. Next time for sure.
I loved The Stand but it was the 1978 edition so guess I’ll have to read the big boy version. And I just learned that Stephen King’s son - Joe Hill is an author 😄😄
It is always great when we learn a new bit of trivia. 😁😁😁
His other son Owen King is also an author.
Interview with the vampire much better in book than the movie. Don't stop with that one though, hit book #2 Lestat. Thats where you really get an understanding of what Ann Rice was making. Read the series, very good. Much better Audio to be honest. Enjoy
Hey, we ain't against taking a deep dive into some Rice. That sounds dirty, sorry. 🤷🏻♂️
Book 3 of the Lost Queen is out on December 3rd!
Ooo so much to look forward to! ❤️❤️❤️
The 1970 version of "The Stand" is better, I'm sorry to say. The 1990 version has all these bizarre idiosyncrasies that throw off the overall feel of the story. The OG publication is a true classic, and blew my mind as a young adult reader.
I may have to read both. 🤔
