You and all his (her?) family must be very very proud. I am proud of all our military, and especially the special ones like the Tomb Guards. Though the sailor whose job was to peel potatoes who went down with his ship; the soldier whose non-combat job was to dig latrines and who died in an air raid--surely we must be proud of them too.

As an army vet, this story makes me tear up a little bit. Such MASSIVE respect for those lost to war. We dont always agree with what we are doing, but we do what we have to in honor and glory for our countries. Mas respect to anyone willing to lay down their life for their countries.

I visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific when I was in Hawaii. It was pretty touching. It offers a beautiful view of the island, but the site itself is a lovely memorial & it details the Pacific theater of World War 2. I saw someone post a video of the Normandy memorial in France, and it reminded me of it.

They only took 1 from each war, so it could truly be, 'unknown' . The body could have been a 17 year old who died 12 seconds into combat, or a veteran with massive decorations who simply couldn't be identified. The Tomb of the Unknown has no ranks, so the symbolism of randomly selecting archives every unknown. As equals.

The soldier being left alone to choose from one of the 4 identical coffins is done so no one knows which battlefield the Unknown is from.
If you know the battlefield the Unknown is from, it is a monument of unknown soldiers for that battlefield, not all battlefields.
By not knowing the battlefield the Unknown Soldier is from, it becomes a monument to the Unknown Soldiers from all battlefields.

    • @brianeleighton
      @brianeleighton 2 роки тому

No. It is not. If that was the case, there wouldn't have been a separate selection process for both the Pacific and European theaters of war. The person doing the selecting is a surviving war hero of the war in question. They give a selection to the selector and it is up to them to decide which identical casket speaks to them. It creates an additional layer of anonymity to the unknown in question. Each unknown is actually a representation of all of the unknowns of the specific conflict.

I am a former US Army soldier that was in The Old Guard. One little known fact is that there is a whole section of unknown soldiers in Arlington Cemetery, all of the soldiers are from the Civil War. Here are the creed and a poem from the Tomb of the Unknown, they are part of the oral test given to the Sentinels.
    The Sentinel's Creed
My dedication to this sacred duty
    is total and whole-hearted.
In the responsibility bestowed on me
    never will I falter.
    And with dignity and perseverance
    my standard will remain perfection.
Through the years of diligence and praise
and the discomfort of the elements,
I will walk my tour in humble reverence
to the best of my ability.
It is he who commands the respect I protect,
his bravery that made us so proud.
Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
this soldier will in honored glory rest
    under my eternal vigilance.
    The Vigil
In measured steps he makes in rounds.
The click of heels the only sounds.
He stands erect so straight and tall,
With pride and dedication responds to the call.
With deep affection his vigil keeps,
    Over those who forever sleep.
He responds not to the visitors stare,
Maintaining his vigil as if in silent prayer.
    In the morning’s twilight hours,
His watch becomes like cathedral towers.
Reaching from earth to heaven above,
A lasting tribute to one man’s love.
As time and seasons come and go,
His vigil remains for all to know.
That beneath the sacred Arlington sod,
Lies three buddies KNOWN BUT TO GOD.

    In 1960, French President Charles de Gaulle complained about the presence of American troops stationed in France, since the Cold War was a thing. He requested that the American units were to be transferred either into West Germany or back to the States. The US Secretary of State at the time simply replied;
“Does that include the ones buried there?”
No response or further complaint came from the French.

The unknown soldiers are a representative of all unknown military members who died in that war. The tomb of the Viet Nam soldier is now empty, since that soldier, and all other deceased soldiers of Viet Nam, have been identified. The Sentinels wear no rank insignias while on guard, so as to not give the appearance of outranking the unknowns. The sentinel badge, second only to the astronaut badge, is one of the least awarded military badges. It can be revoked at any time during the life of a sentinel if they bring discredit to themselves, the Old Guard, or the U.S. military.

Sorry, I don't mean to fill up your comment section but I also just had to mention, that photo of the soldiers all gathered on the ship when they selected the soldier from WWII always makes me tear up any time I've seen it as well, just seeing all those soldiers, probably at least a hundred if not more than that, all standing there at attention and saluting as the unknown soldiers casket is taken from the ship, there's not one man standing there in that photo, that I can find anyway, that isn't saluting and that gets me every time I see it, just to see the level of respect that those young men have for this soldier who they'll never even know his name and yet you can bet that nobody forced them to do that, nobody told them to because that's just what they were supposed to do for the cameras or whatever, you can bet that they did that on their own, not because they figured it would be expected or anything like that but because they felt it was appropriate for this man who'd died an unknown hero. I love the Sentinels who guard the tomb too, if you haven't done any of the videos about them yet you really should, there's a lot actually that they do that is very touching in itself in just the way they guard these soldiers. Just a couple that stand out to me is that the Sentinels don't wear their rank insignias when they are on guard duty and the reason for that is so that they won't outrank the unknown soldiers since nobody knows what their ranks were. Another that I actually didn't even know until recently is the significance of their actual march back and forth in front of the tomb. As the video said, they take 21 steps in each direction and then pause for 21 seconds at each end before turning and walking back. The significance of this is that the highest honor that the military gives in burial honors is the 21 Gun Salute and that is why they take exactly 21 steps and pause for 21 seconds, it is a way for them to be continuously honoring the unknown soldiers by that being representative of the 21 gun salute.

They choose one at random because they can’t bury them all at the tomb. The thought is that because the families of the unknowns don’t have a burial place that they can visit, they can visit the tomb, and there’s a chance, however slim, that the body inside is that of their loved one.

I'm like you, I wish they could have brought them all back and buried them with the highest of honors but I guess in reality there were just so many unknown soldiers who'd been killed in each of these wars that it just wasn't possible. I mean they'd had to create and fill entire cemeteries in the countries where they'd been fighting in order to bury them all so it just wasn't feasible to have them all exhumed and then buried again someplace else so the one soldier chosen and honored from each of these wars is meant to represent all those that were lost and were never able to be brought home or even identified. It's very touching that they would honor them in this way and I think that the most touching part for me personally is that not only was he given the Medal of Honor from his own country, that would be somewhat expected in a ceremony like this and given what the soldier was meant to represent, but he was also given the highest honors from all those other countries as well, including Britain's Victoria Cross which to my understanding isn't awarded very often and even more rarely to foreign soldiers, and that America in turn gave Medal's of Honor to unknowns from those countries as well which they mentioned in the video are the only foreign soldiers ever to receive that honor as well, and as far as I'm aware that's still the case.

It's estimated that 6 million of the servicemen in WWI are unknowns. They're officially listed as "Missing in action, assumed dead". Total military dead WWI 9 to 11 million, civilian dead about equal.
It's to be noted that not all these deaths were caused by combat. Diseases accounted for at least 10 to 15 percent.

There was a time in history before the event of DNA, that you couldn't tell because of the conditions of battle who was who,so they placed soldiers who were unknown to represent all the unknown soldiers, to make sure that they were honored and that families and the country had a place to remember them they symbolize the unknowns, but they also symbolize every fallen soldier who fought for the our country, I am an American I am from the state of Florida thank you for doing this reaction.

They only wanted one Unkown. Place 4 coffins in one place, have someone pick just one to ensure that there is no way of knowing who was in the grave.

A couple things: Each unknown is being honored not only for his own sacrifice; it is intended that he represent all the unknowns from his war. So the Tomb traditions are to honor ALL the unknowns. Also: A few years ago when a major hurricane went through Washington, the tomb guards were offered the opportunity to skip guard duty in the 160 kph winds. They declined, and walked guard anyway.
