You would think that EVERYONE wants to work on an island, but the truth is that once the reality of the distance from comforts asserts itself, most people cannot handle it. I did well, though. "ONLY 6 people to deal with here!" Now, I live surrounded by Deer (who approach me) and Crows (who I feed, and who return the plate to my door). I've met the resident Raven pair (we get along). There's a Black Bear who visits, and who I steadfastly refuse to tell my Human neighbors about because they'll shoot him or her (on size, I think him). All of my non-human neighbors know that all are welcome, all are safe, and all will be fed. I've sat with Deer moms as they grieved their road-killed children for MONTHS. I've put sticks around Cat-killed Crows as the Crows often do, and been rewarded with friendship. It's not that Empaths are antisocial. We just feel more of what the other person puts forth. We tend to deal poorly with groups. I have found that my limit is 3 or 4 people. More if I know us to be congruent because I don't have to process as much discord and can focus on the outliers. I get lonely sometimes. But there's this really beautiful world of non-Humans. I tap into it by seeing Who shows up in my world. Plants show up because they're needed. I see this all the time: "Hey, I didn't plant you. Who are you?" As it turns out, it's Somebody who makes my COPD better or Somebody who reduces my social 'anxiety.' Odjibwe is a really unusual language. I don't speak it, I only know about it. One of the things that make it unique is that the ratio of nouns to verbs is exactly flipped when compared to virtually every other language. 70% of the words are verbs. This gives everyTHING agency. It's not a Bay, it's "to be a Bay." It's not a Mountain, it's "to be a Mountain." It has Purpose. Animus. It's a non-human Person to be reckoned with. It's not a place or an object to be exploited. It's a Neighbor. Those relationships are stable. I've had Crows recognize me nearly 100 miles away from my home, while having no Human friends, nobody who has even asked my name, within the valley I live in. This year, my Black Walnuts withheld a mast year, so Deer will starve. And I will do what I do: I will nurture them. I was gifted with the the trust of a mom Deer giving birth in the thicket behind my house, and I have been gifted with seeing her Doe grow up. I have been gifted with being an uncle to a raucous murder of Crows, of teaching fledglings about fingers, of introducing them to Strawberries, of being nose to beak with a Raven on a Butte, having Her do barrel rolls just to show off, and returning (TOK-TOK-TOK!) to continue the mutual, "Who ARE you?" I took my sunglasses off. Her bill was an inch from my eyes; she could easily have taken one. We were a mile above a valley floor, in a place that didn't belong to Humans. "Why are you here?" She seemed to keep asking. Knocking is love. "TOK-TOK-TOK" is love. But the question. I told her, "For us, there's a difference between fear of heights and vertigo. Fear of heights is the fear of falling. Vertigo is the fear of jumping." She looked at me for a long moment before diving into the abyss and doing another barrel roll. When she returned, she nuzzled me. I'm sorry that I went long. But your response touched me. Living and dying are both perfectly safe. That was Her message. I am alive because of a Raven.
