I think Dami has a more introverted personality, which is rare for an Idol. I don't know if "badass Dami" is her overcompensating, but it clearly works for her, so more power to her! 😊
Dont worry about sounding harsh, everything was valid and you gave solid advice. It's really nice and even the viewers can actually use this advice to improve. She's been singing more in the newest album. Personally I felt like she's singing much better now than the early songs since they are bit lower. Perhaps her lack of confidence also plays some role because she's been rapping for the most part since debut. Great video as always. Still best girl tho. 💜
My take is her comfort zone is rapping. She choose to rap since the beginning (cause like SuA she doesn't confident on rapping but she did rap on their minx debut song) and did write rap lines on a few songs (even ask to write one for Jiu song). The fact that Leez and Ollounder (their producers + friends) give more line that aren't really rapping on bside song as time goes by, for me it is really encouraging for Dami to try singing more these days. Also, their line is distributed by each of the members sing the whole song first then it will be decided. And also, sometimes there is unnoticed Dami lines (like just before jiu bridge part in boca) shows that they know what the members are capable of. Another thing, they singing on Idol Radio are more like having karaoke session than doing a performance. That's why you see them with funny costumes. After all, superb effort on your video Sir.
Yes, in fact, many rappers from other k-pop groups tend to feel not very confident or comfortable singing other styles, like Lisa from BlackPink for example, dami has a unique voice, she you just have to work on it and especially find how to give each song her own style
trivia fact: dami was part of a school choir when she was younger, she even mentioned she won a prize and spent all the money in candy lol She said she decided to be an idol at that very moment, cause she liked the feeling of being up stage. So she does have vocal training, at least some basics. And yes, she has quite an impressive belt for a rapper, it surprisingly sounds more confortable and supported than her "light" breathed lines. Which may also be a matter of confidence, when you sing with support, it's usually easier to hit the pitch and control it, so you wont go off tune, the lack of confidence when she sings like that could probably be because she feels unstable without proper support. During adele song i felt she was too worried about the vocal agility parts to focus on supporting properly and it got her kinda insecure on how to the hit notes without going off tune. She definetely has the potencial and the range and the naturally pleasing vocal color to do it, but sometimes i wonder if she actually wants it. They probably have priorities when it comes to training, so i bet dami usually would be up for a lot more rapping classes than vocal, so maybe singing is not where she wants to focus at the moment, which would be her choice, and it would be ok. If she keeps the amount of lines she has right now, i dont see it being a problem, cause she doesnt sing very often to cause much damage. Oh about sua's vocals... well... she usually yells the notes quite a lot, hence why i personally think Jiu is a better vocalist at the moment, but both of them are really close when it comes to singing. Sua had vocal nodules before btw. But i do think her singing improved a lot, specially in this new era, her high note during boca sounds more supported and healthier (and better) than previous times when she sang in similar pitches. She does have an impressive range, considering her low register is also very wide. She said recently she has been focusing on singing more than rapping, so im guessing that's where the fast improvement came from. Im really proud of her. And yes siyeon's note in this high note battle gets me dead worried all the time, i cant shake away the pain i feel in my own vocal chords whenever i watch it lol She seems to be slowly improving her support throughtout the years tho and yeah, sometimes she steps out of it to belt high notes, but well, it's really not that far from her supported range, so as you said, i guess she will be ok if she keeps training and improving. Gotta say im kinda excited thinking about how great she would sound in a couple of years,

Jazz Bar is where her voice belongs. I've heard all of her vocals and that one actually surprised me because I didn't know she could sing like that at the time. Deja Vu was really when fans took notice of her singing voice and Jazz Bar clinched the deal. When she said fans liked her vocal color, that was spot on because we really do. I'd like to hear more from her along the lines of Norah Jones. I don't think Dami thought her singing voice was very good. She surprised us when the company let her sing in a title track and we surprised her by loving it. That should really boost her confidence in continuing to develop her voice. Sua went through the same process, starting as the rapper and now only doing vocals as her voice got better.
I agree with you completely - Dami IS very talented and she IS a good singer. I think she’s just always too nervous whenever she has to sing & she’s not trusting herself :( I might be lying to you rn idk but I think I’ve read somewhere that Siyeon and the members help her out whenever she has singing parts in Dreamcatcher’s B-sides but it’s always better to work with a vocal coach and I think their company should let her see one as well. Or maybe they are too scared she might become unstoppable hahahah Thank you for this very informative video!! You know, as InSomnia, we will watch 40 minutes of First Time Dreamcatcher Reactions by random people, why wouldn’t we watch 40 minutes of in-depth vocal analysis of our favorite group??! You’ve done a wonderful service for the community. Thank you!!! I have one question-from my place of total ignorance the two things I’ve “learned” that define “good” vocals are: pitch and vibrato. But you barely mentioned either one... are they not that important after all? I lol’d when you said you’d find SuA annoying in real life. IIRC she mentioned in the Between Me and Dreamcatcher series that she understood her personality could be difficult at times. I’m certain they’ve all annoyed each other multiple times over the 4-6 years they’ve been together. I always admire the leaders of large, diverse groups who can hold them together over a long period of time. IMO the culture of a team is the main contribution of a leader like Jiu-and only a very open and nurturing culture can help people grow and stay close for years despite the annoyances. I’d add my wish that you could do similar videos for some of the other members, but I can’t imagine the time and effort involved. If the mood strikes you, though... we would certainly be appreciative!
So. Pitch is very important. I didn't bring it up too much because Dami had pretty good pitch! And having vibrato doesn't always mean anything. A good singer can choose to sing with vibrato or without it. It's just a stylistic choice. I don't think Dami is that skilled yet. But Siyeon definitely can control hers. Honestly - she impressed me. It was more than I was expecting. But there's always room for improvement. It was a labor of love. Because I love Dami lol. But....I might turn this into a series. The main vocalists just have so many more clips to choose from. 😅
someone with good vocals for me: someone who can control her/his voice to make her/his voice sound beautiful to listen, even able to make her/his voice transforming to be a gesture/expression/story that can make you feeling the song...

Korean shows have all types of voice-demaging games that I wish fans would stop challenging their idols for at fansigns. Like that "CLEOPATRA" thing. It is painful to even listen to. I think Dami started to try to sing again bc she aspires to be a true artist - writing lyrics, making melodies etc. And there is some important information to remember about these clips. When she was wearing the suit - that was her birthday fanmeeting, it was her FIRST time to sing in public like this and the fact that she chose Adele's song for that... When they were kind of goofing off with Yoohyeon while singing "Love scenario" - this is originally boy group song and I'm not sure if they changed the pitch or not but what I noticed is that she is struggling to find the way to sing it (I do that a lot but I had no training ever so there's that). When she was singing Billie Eilish's song - the host was Korean and he made a face when she mentioned foreign singer. What Koreans do often is pronounce English words a little different when they talk among themselves (like you write them in Korean alphabet which requires adding some vowels to create syllables that were not originally in the word) so she mispronunced the lyrics probably bc of that mc. Her pronunciation is actually quite good - and I talk from seeing her speak live during concert back in 2018. I hope she will actually get a vocal coach to work with her now that they are doing pretty good. And we know they usually work by themselves - you can see that in their vlogs. So if she made this progress all by herself? It is damn impressive. All the love for Dami and her amazing ability to clench all of our hearts while she performs. Next video on queen SuA please XD (And not just singing but imitating instruments with her voice as well).

Dami's voice is really beautiful. And while she might not be the strongest vocalist (good thing she still has lots of rooms to improve, it's not like she can't thankfully) NO ONE else can rap like she does. I guess for idols it's kind of hard to be able to train 100% at everything... that's why they get their positions assigned. So they can focused on their own part??? If she was a soloist she would probably be a super good singer too and get the proper training. Even so!!! As you said with more practice she could be as good as the lead vocal (I think main vocal might be a stretch imo), but what might help her as much as a vocal coach is getting more confidence in that singing. That last clip at the beginning of the High Note Game Siyeon mentioned she was recovering her voice from one of the injuries that you described, she over stressed her voice during a performance that week so she couldn't utilize her full range. I wholeheartedly agree that Dami has one of the most unique voices I've ever heard. I first discovered them from their Japanese release of "Breaking Out". Her voice stood out so much to me I had to look into them more. She has said multiple times that she prefers to rap because she doesn't feel like her voice is suited for singing. As you said, she just needs some coaching she has the pitch and rhythm she just needs the technique to become a major vocal weapon for them. I've said it before, every single member of Dreamcatcher could be a main/lead vocal in any other K-Pop group out there, they are that talented. The fact that Handong, Dami, and Gahyeon are only listed as "vocalists" just shows how high the DCC standards are.
Dami's singing is full of weaknesses but I actually like it because it's charming and contrasts with her rap. On a more general note, I don't want an artist to be good at everything because weaknesses are attractive. Thx for the video
As always, an amazing video! And yes, since you talked about her confidence. Trivia time! In their last album (Dystopia: Lose Myself), Jiu wrote and composed a (ballad) song, DEAR (you should check that out, along with Can't Get You Out Of My Mind). When Jiu was assigning the parts to the members, Dami asked if there was a rap part for her but Jiu said no (she was gonna make her sing). So yes it's really a matter of confidence issue but I think she's focusing on beat-making and composition (she has her own studio), I hope she realizes she has a wide range and nurtures it eventually. As for Sua, if you're gonna make a reaction for her, please make sure to check out R.o.S.E. Blue. Her improvement is really evident if you could check her performances through the years. If she wants to be a vocalist, I hope they'll give her some proper coaching so she can reach her full potential. And if she'd rather not, she's still a fantastic rapper (and thank you for talking about how difficult rapping is - most people don't!). She needs more vocal training and confident to sing more...the producer always seem like to place her into a interesting position when come to singing..such like Jazz Bar, And there was no one else, Can't get you out of my mind..which sound to me Dami got a flexible tones that can cut into that sparkling spot to bring more enerygy to a song. Rapping part..i love her vowel, it is very full..and flexi. Not like other girl group rappers which come overpowering and over agrresive pretty much, hurtful to my ears..can't even listen their vowel and pronouciation.
its not the producers placing her there! they've said all members sing the entire song and then they all choose which member sounds the best in which part and that's how they do line distribution
@@roza2633 probably, but I also think since they've worked with Dreamcatcher a lot they probably have a good idea of what they can do and who would fit what part, their capabilities. Though in most cases it's probably them singing the whole song, I don't think they necessarily would have known Handong's holding this pain would sound so good.

I admit, when I first saw the Title Of this video, I Bristled. Dami is my bias and her voice is so unique and entirely her own, and I’ve seen plenty of people making fun of her because of her voice, because it’s not the stereotypical cutesy pop voice. But this video is perfect. It shows her in all her talents, she’s human and so hardworking. Her voice and vocal confidence has obviously gotten better and stronger over time. Thank you for bringing attention to her and to the fantastic group Dreamcatcher 💜

I feel like Dami tries to do technical things with her voice without having the basics down and that results in a "would like to but can't" kind of situation. It's not easy being in a group with Siyeon and Yoohyeon, Jiu is not a bad singer too so it's a situation where your self-esteem as a singer can take a toll.

I loveee your analysis. It's true that when it comes to bias, you will tend to bypass a lot of things and avoid talking about their weaknesses. I am the same. Dami is my ult bias and I love her so much but tbh sometimes I feel like she lacks of confidence which causes her voice a little unstable. In her cover of Someone Like You, I did notice that she might crack since she was so close and I can also see how she got nervous because of that too. I am not familiar with singing technique, but I can definitely tell that Dami needs to work on her vocal. However, jazz bar threw me off and when I first heard it i was like OMG THAT'S MY GIRL lol. You know sometimes the moment you become so proud of someone is not because they are already perfect in the beginning, but when they get improved days by days. And that's Dami to me. She gets better everyday and I truly believe that she could kick that vocal if she practices enough. But if she doesn't want to, it's all alright because to me she is one of the best rappers already and I am picky when choosing rapper bias. Your video is so on point, I wish you could become her vocal coach because you would care for her best and teach her everything she needs haha

Highly appreciate your work and love to Dami. I think Dami has the most unique timber in Dreamcatcher and i do hope she can sing more in coming songs. I'm not good at and barely sing, so I don't know what is the problem of her sing. But to me, it seems when she tries to hit the higher note above chest voice range, she tends to push harder on her throat that makes her uncomfortable. And there is a clear 'break'(i don't know it is the correct word to describe) from chest voice to higher note. Is that a problem of her voice restriction or just technical issue?(i feel the same when i sing too) Anyway, again thank you for your honest review and don't feel bad about giving your critique. Most of Somnia i know are rational and kind. Looking forward to other members analysis, especially Sua who i think there is a lot of potential on her voice. Fighting👍

There's a video of Sua and Jiu messing around and singing karaoke and Sua casually just does a whistle note. It's hilarious. Sua has improved a lot as a vocalist, and she's literally main dancer lol

i'm just gonna do bullet points for this comment cause i have too much to say.. • i do remember dami saying she doesn't feel very comfortable singing, like if i remember correctly she said something about being unsure of her voice and i think that's even partly why she got into rapping? don't quote me on that cause i remember hearing it over a year ago. either way even her most recent comments are similar, in a radio interview from the day boca was released she said she even asked jiu to include a rap part on her song "dear" and it seems she still does not think of herself as a singer. that being said it's clear she's been working on her vocals and vocal technique more and she's mentioned that and wanting a singing special clip so i think we will definitely see her singing more in the future • i think a big part of all the issues you pointed out in the case of dami is about confidence. i remember watching this um.. "hatching out" vlive from right after they debuted as dreamcatcher and she actually messed up her rapping like twice and she looked nervous even tho it's clear she's already been a great rapper back then. i think she got soooo much more confident as a rapper since then and it's very visible, but it hasn't happened with singing just yet so stress is probably a major factor (and speaking of that based on pretty recent idol radio appearances i think gahyeon still isn't as confident as a singer yet either, but she seems to already be more confident in her rapping... maybe it's just related to the kind of.. powerful vibe her rapping parts have?) • i love what you said about rapping. i've watched quite a few different vocal coaches and at best they seem to know nothing about rapping and at worst they seem to think singing requires a loooot more skill? so it's good to see you saying this! • i hope you do a video like this for every member. would be interesting and i'd particularly like to hear what you have to say about sua. the color of her voice is my favourite in the group and i think she's great, but i also do think at times her technique might not be great? i'm no expert, it's just what i noticed with some live performances (sounding like she's straining at times) so i'd love hearing your thoughts on it • lastly, are you familiar with sam johnson and his channel? just asking cause i actually used to watch a lot of his vocal analysis videos last year, because the way he gives criticism is just kind of perfect and as someone often struggling with perfectionism it's very helpful to see and helps me with my art. and i think you're very similar to him in that way! so i'm very happy you like dreamcatcher, but i'd probably watch your vocal analysis even if it wasn't about my fave group (so have a great day!)

I have to say u got to watch dami and sua's cover of taemin 'move'. I feel like Dami's voice sound amazing there. Also you must react to all B sides of Dreamcatcher thry are sooooo good and you can hear Dami's voice sprinkled in them (some have more of her voice in them than others). Make sure to also look for the colour coded lyrics videos (so you see who sings which part as many times I'm surprised by the way in which Dami was included in the song). And yes I agree with you 100%. She just needs a vocal coach to help her with her singing and confidence should come with the appreciation of the fans. Yes, another great video. I love listen to people talking about something they know a lot about and are passionate about. Don't worry not saying only the good things, after all you're not hating but just giving your professional opinion that is really valid. For me Dami is good singer and can be even better. I don't know much about it but maybe she needs the right song to fit her voice. And of course some vocal training would be good too. I hope you'll do vocal analysis of the rest of the group too, it's really interesting to watch. Also even if for now you completely fell for Dreamcatcher I'd like to hear what you think about Minnie and Yuqi from (G)I-DLE. Minnie is known for having soothing and soft voice and Yuqi may not look like it but she has a deep husky voice. Both of them sang 'Scared to be lonely' on some show. But they were singing during they vlives too, so it'll be completely live. Hope you find some time to check it out in the future. Thank you for this really in-depth review of Dami and her skills! I think if you like her a lot, you'll really like Oh My Girl's Mimi, who's another really skilled rapper with a really interesting vocal timbre. I don't know how you'll feel about the group's musical style? You seem to enjoy Dreamcatcher's dark and powerful sound and Oh My Girl is much lighter and more feminine, but a lot of their tracks have some great power to them. As a huge fan of both groups, I think they're both home to some of the best vocalists and rappers in Kpop, and I'd love to see you react to some of Oh My Girl's work as well. Nonstop is their latest comeback, but Mimi also has her own UA-cam Channel where she does solo/duo covers with other members, and those include raps she's written.
Nice ending on that high note. I can it's a struggle to be critical, nice but honest, you pulled that of nicely. 😊 I mostly knew the Adele song and the few non-rap lines she has. Her Deja Vu part is very nice, so in my mind she was a little better. Not not sure, but I think I can hear the difference between speaking voice and singing from your diaphragm. I used to think the difference was breath control and stamina (as people tend to sound out of breath sooner, or like almost). But how do you actually use your diaphram, and how hard is it to train? p.s. my only knowledge from singing is from vocal coaches reacting (mostly Floor Jansen / Nightwish Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013 😀). So some is too in depth and not much critique 😁. I also love reactions to Jinjer (Pisces is a good one to start) and Babymetal reactions can be funny. Julia Nilon is my favorite now (bit of a crush on her), one of the few to react to both Kpop (Mamamoo 😍) and metal. The charismatic voice may also have reacted to both. (So many reactions!).

Good analysis. I think it's only natural to be more critical with Siyeon for instance because we already acknowledge she is amazing so you have to hold her to a varsity level. As a Handong bias I'm happy you mention her unique voice!
You talked about how our mid range is like our normal speaking voice that we've been doing our whole life. I laughed at that part because I am FtM and am not used to my voice on testosterone and do not sing well like I used to anymore.

I think Dami has a more introverted personality, which is rare for an Idol. I don't know if "badass Dami" is her overcompensating, but it clearly works for her, so more power to her! 😊
Dont worry about sounding harsh, everything was valid and you gave solid advice. It's really nice and even the viewers can actually use this advice to improve. She's been singing more in the newest album. Personally I felt like she's singing much better now than the early songs since they are bit lower. Perhaps her lack of confidence also plays some role because she's been rapping for the most part since debut. Great video as always.

My take is her comfort zone is rapping. She choose to rap since the beginning (cause like SuA she doesn't confident on rapping but she did rap on their minx debut song) and did write rap lines on a few songs (even ask to write one for Jiu song). The fact that Leez and Ollounder (their producers + friends) give more line that aren't really rapping on bside song as time goes by, for me it is really encouraging for Dami to try singing more these days. Also, their line is distributed by each of the members sing the whole song first then it will be decided. And also, sometimes there is unnoticed Dami lines (like just before jiu bridge part in boca) shows that they know what the members are capable of. Another thing, they singing on Idol Radio are more like having karaoke session than doing a performance. That's why you see them with funny costumes. After all, superb effort on your video Sir.
Yes, in fact, many rappers from other k-pop groups tend to feel not very confident or comfortable singing other styles, like Lisa from BlackPink for example, dami has a unique voice, she you just have to work on it and especially find how to give each song her own style
Dami has that jazzy voice gahyeon has sweet voice and sua is versatile.Thats the rappers in the group😁
Gahyeon has a sweet singing voice but her rapping voice is aggressive and sharp. Gahyeon in Piri is freaking amazing
trivia fact: dami was part of a school choir when she was younger, she even mentioned she won a prize and spent all the money in candy lol She said she decided to be an idol at that very moment, cause she liked the feeling of being up stage. So she does have vocal training, at least some basics. And yes, she has quite an impressive belt for a rapper, it surprisingly sounds more confortable and supported than her "light" breathed lines. Which may also be a matter of confidence, when you sing with support, it's usually easier to hit the pitch and control it, so you wont go off tune, the lack of confidence when she sings like that could probably be because she feels unstable without proper support. During adele song i felt she was too worried about the vocal agility parts to focus on supporting properly and it got her kinda insecure on how to the hit notes without going off tune. She definetely has the potencial and the range and the naturally pleasing vocal color to do it, but sometimes i wonder if she actually wants it. They probably have priorities when it comes to training, so i bet dami usually would be up for a lot more rapping classes than vocal, so maybe singing is not where she wants to focus at the moment, which would be her choice, and it would be ok. If she keeps the amount of lines she has right now, i dont see it being a problem, cause she doesnt sing very often to cause much damage.
Oh about sua's vocals... well... she usually yells the notes quite a lot, hence why i personally think Jiu is a better vocalist at the moment, but both of them are really close when it comes to singing. Sua had vocal nodules before btw. But i do think her singing improved a lot, specially in this new era, her high note during boca sounds more supported and healthier (and better) than previous times when she sang in similar pitches. She does have an impressive range, considering her low register is also very wide. She said recently she has been focusing on singing more than rapping, so im guessing that's where the fast improvement came from. Im really proud of her.
And yes siyeon's note in this high note battle gets me dead worried all the time, i cant shake away the pain i feel in my own vocal chords whenever i watch it lol She seems to be slowly improving her support throughtout the years tho and yeah, sometimes she steps out of it to belt high notes, but well, it's really not that far from her supported range, so as you said, i guess she will be ok if she keeps training and improving. Gotta say im kinda excited thinking about how great she would sound in a couple of years,

Jazz Bar is where her voice belongs. I've heard all of her vocals and that one actually surprised me because I didn't know she could sing like that at the time. Deja Vu was really when fans took notice of her singing voice and Jazz Bar clinched the deal. When she said fans liked her vocal color, that was spot on because we really do. I'd like to hear more from her along the lines of Norah Jones. I don't think Dami thought her singing voice was very good. She surprised us when the company let her sing in a title track and we surprised her by loving it. That should really boost her confidence in continuing to develop her voice. Sua went through the same process, starting as the rapper and now only doing vocals as her voice got better.

I agree with you completely - Dami IS very talented and she IS a good singer. I think she’s just always too nervous whenever she has to sing & she’s not trusting herself :( I might be lying to you rn idk but I think I’ve read somewhere that Siyeon and the members help her out whenever she has singing parts in Dreamcatcher’s B-sides but it’s always better to work with a vocal coach and I think their company should let her see one as well. Or maybe they are too scared she might become unstoppable hahahah

I have one question-from my place of total ignorance the two things I’ve “learned” that define “good” vocals are: pitch and vibrato. But you barely mentioned either one... are they not that important after all?
I lol’d when you said you’d find SuA annoying in real life. IIRC she mentioned in the Between Me and Dreamcatcher series that she understood her personality could be difficult at times. I’m certain they’ve all annoyed each other multiple times over the 4-6 years they’ve been together. I always admire the leaders of large, diverse groups who can hold them together over a long period of time. IMO the culture of a team is the main contribution of a leader like Jiu-and only a very open and nurturing culture can help people grow and stay close for years despite the annoyances.
I’d add my wish that you could do similar videos for some of the other members, but I can’t imagine the time and effort involved. If the mood strikes you, though... we would certainly be appreciative!
So. Pitch is very important. I didn't bring it up too much because Dami had pretty good pitch! And having vibrato doesn't always mean anything. A good singer can choose to sing with vibrato or without it. It's just a stylistic choice. I don't think Dami is that skilled yet. But Siyeon definitely can control hers. Honestly - she impressed me. It was more than I was expecting. But there's always room for improvement. It was a labor of love. Because I love Dami lol. But....I might turn this into a series. The main vocalists just have so many more clips to choose from. 😅
someone with good vocals for me: someone who can control her/his voice to make her/his voice sound beautiful to listen, even able to make her/his voice transforming to be a gesture/expression/story that can make you feeling the song...

Korean shows have all types of voice-demaging games that I wish fans would stop challenging their idols for at fansigns. Like that "CLEOPATRA" thing. It is painful to even listen to.
I think Dami started to try to sing again bc she aspires to be a true artist - writing lyrics, making melodies etc. And there is some important information to remember about these clips. When she was wearing the suit - that was her birthday fanmeeting, it was her FIRST time to sing in public like this and the fact that she chose Adele's song for that... When they were kind of goofing off with Yoohyeon while singing "Love scenario" - this is originally boy group song and I'm not sure if they changed the pitch or not but what I noticed is that she is struggling to find the way to sing it (I do that a lot but I had no training ever so there's that). When she was singing Billie Eilish's song - the host was Korean and he made a face when she mentioned foreign singer. What Koreans do often is pronounce English words a little different when they talk among themselves (like you write them in Korean alphabet which requires adding some vowels to create syllables that were not originally in the word) so she mispronunced the lyrics probably bc of that mc. Her pronunciation is actually quite good - and I talk from seeing her speak live during concert back in 2018.
I hope she will actually get a vocal coach to work with her now that they are doing pretty good. And we know they usually work by themselves - you can see that in their vlogs. So if she made this progress all by herself? It is damn impressive. All the love for Dami and her amazing ability to clench all of our hearts while she performs.

Dami's voice is really beautiful. And while she might not be the strongest vocalist (good thing she still has lots of rooms to improve, it's not like she can't thankfully) NO ONE else can rap like she does. I guess for idols it's kind of hard to be able to train 100% at everything... that's why they get their positions assigned. So they can focused on their own part??? If she was a soloist she would probably be a super good singer too and get the proper training. Even so!!! Dreamcatcher is still one of the most wellrounded groups to ever exist and I appreciate that so much. Love your videos!!!!

Thank you for this. It was worth every second, Dami has such a duality. The swag and fire while rapping and spitting bars, and on the other side the more delicate soft vocals when singing. As you said with more practice she could be as good as the lead vocal (I think main vocal might be a stretch imo), but what might help her as much as a vocal coach is getting more confidence in that singing. Eventhough she has loads of confidence while rapping, so this is something that'll just come with doing it more maybe?

That last clip at the beginning of the High Note Game Siyeon mentioned she was recovering her voice from one of the injuries that you described, she over stressed her voice during a performance that week so she couldn't utilize her full range.
I wholeheartedly agree that Dami has one of the most unique voices I've ever heard. I first discovered them from their Japanese release of "Breaking Out". Her voice stood out so much to me I had to look into them more.
She has said multiple times that she prefers to rap because she doesn't feel like her voice is suited for singing. As you said, she just needs some coaching she has the pitch and rhythm she just needs the technique to become a major vocal weapon for them. I've said it before, every single member of Dreamcatcher could be a main/lead vocal in any other K-Pop group out there, they are that talented. The fact that Handong, Dami, and Gahyeon are only listed as "vocalists" just shows how high the DCC standards are.
Finally was able to watch this all the way through. In addition to seeing them in concert, I think you should be Dami's vocal coach :)

Dami's singing is full of weaknesses but I actually like it because it's charming and contrasts with her rap. On a more general note, I don't want an artist to be good at everything because weaknesses are attractive.

In their last album (Dystopia: Lose Myself), Jiu wrote and composed a (ballad) song, DEAR (you should check that out, along with Can't Get You Out Of My Mind). When Jiu was assigning the parts to the members, Dami asked if there was a rap part for her but Jiu said no (she was gonna make her sing). So yes it's really a matter of confidence issue but I think she's focusing on beat-making and composition (she has her own studio), I hope she realizes she has a wide range and nurtures it eventually.
As for Sua, if you're gonna make a reaction for her, please make sure to check out R.o.S.E. Blue. Her improvement is really evident if you could check her performances through the years.

I've been waiting for this video! I agree with you, Dami obviously has the talent, but lacks confidence and training. If she wants to be a vocalist, I hope they'll give her some proper coaching so she can reach her full potential. And if she'd rather not, she's still a fantastic rapper (and thank you for talking about how difficult rapping is - most people don't!).

She needs more vocal training and confident to sing more...the producer always seem like to place her into a interesting position when come to singing..such like Jazz Bar, And there was no one else, Can't get you out of my mind..which sound to me Dami got a flexible tones that can cut into that sparkling spot to bring more enerygy to a song.
Rapping part..i love her vowel, it is very full..and flexi. Not like other girl group rappers which come overpowering and over agrresive pretty much, hurtful to my ears..can't even listen their vowel and pronouciation.
its not the producers placing her there! they've said all members sing the entire song and then they all choose which member sounds the best in which part and that's how they do line distribution
@@roza2633 probably, but I also think since they've worked with Dreamcatcher a lot they probably have a good idea of what they can do and who would fit what part, their capabilities. Though in most cases it's probably them singing the whole song, I don't think they necessarily would have known Handong's holding this pain would sound so good.

I admit, when I first saw the Title Of this video, I Bristled. Dami is my bias and her voice is so unique and entirely her own, and I’ve seen plenty of people making fun of her because of her voice, because it’s not the stereotypical cutesy pop voice.
But this video is perfect. It shows her in all her talents, she’s human and so hardworking. Her voice and vocal confidence has obviously gotten better and stronger over time.

I feel like Dami tries to do technical things with her voice without having the basics down and that results in a "would like to but can't" kind of situation. It's not easy being in a group with Siyeon and Yoohyeon, Jiu is not a bad singer too so it's a situation where your self-esteem as a singer can take a toll.
somebody should recommend it to her to seek a vocal coach to train her vocals more in her vlive one of these days~shes gonna beast once she had those proper training xD this was sucha neat vid to watch despite i'm just taking stuffs through context only as some terms u mentioned is just stuffs im not familiar with but i can totally hear that on some parts she doesnt sound the best she can~was expecting to hear some of the bside parts of her in here too since those might sound better but i'll wait patiently till that come for u to comment on it xD

I loveee your analysis. It's true that when it comes to bias, you will tend to bypass a lot of things and avoid talking about their weaknesses. I am the same. Dami is my ult bias and I love her so much but tbh sometimes I feel like she lacks of confidence which causes her voice a little unstable. In her cover of Someone Like You, I did notice that she might crack since she was so close and I can also see how she got nervous because of that too. I am not familiar with singing technique, but I can definitely tell that Dami needs to work on her vocal. However, jazz bar threw me off and when I first heard it i was like OMG THAT'S MY GIRL lol. You know sometimes the moment you become so proud of someone is not because they are already perfect in the beginning, but when they get improved days by days. And that's Dami to me. She gets better everyday and I truly believe that she could kick that vocal if she practices enough. But if she doesn't want to, it's all alright because to me she is one of the best rappers already and I am picky when choosing rapper bias. Your video is so on point, I wish you could become her vocal coach because you would care for her best and teach her everything she needs haha

Highly appreciate your work and love to Dami. I think Dami has the most unique timber in Dreamcatcher and i do hope she can sing more in coming songs. I'm not good at and barely sing, so I don't know what is the problem of her sing. But to me, it seems when she tries to hit the higher note above chest voice range, she tends to push harder on her throat that makes her uncomfortable. And there is a clear 'break'(i don't know it is the correct word to describe) from chest voice to higher note. There's a video of Sua and Jiu messing around and singing karaoke and Sua casually just does a whistle note. It's hilarious. Sua has improved a lot as a vocalist, and she's literally main dancer lol
If SuA will annoy me everyday I'll be fine with it, she's definitely the definition of the perfect rowdy friend and your voice sounds super good like super good

i'm just gonna do bullet points for this comment cause i have too much to say..
• i do remember dami saying she doesn't feel very comfortable singing, like if i remember correctly she said something about being unsure of her voice and i think that's even partly why she got into rapping? don't quote me on that cause i remember hearing it over a year ago. either way even her most recent comments are similar, in a radio interview from the day boca was released she said she even asked jiu to include a rap part on her song "dear" and it seems she still does not think of herself as a singer. that being said it's clear she's been working on her vocals and vocal technique more and she's mentioned that and wanting a singing special clip so i think we will definitely see her singing more in the future
• i think a big part of all the issues you pointed out in the case of dami is about confidence. i remember watching this um.. "hatching out" vlive from right after they debuted as dreamcatcher and she actually messed up her rapping like twice and she looked nervous even tho it's clear she's already been a great rapper back then. i think she got soooo much more confident as a rapper since then and it's very visible, but it hasn't happened with singing just yet so stress is probably a major factor (and speaking of that based on pretty recent idol radio appearances i think gahyeon still isn't as confident as a singer yet either, but she seems to already be more confident in her rapping... maybe it's just related to the kind of.. powerful vibe her rapping parts have?)
• i love what you said about rapping. i've watched quite a few different vocal coaches and at best they seem to know nothing about rapping and at worst they seem to think singing requires a loooot more skill? so it's good to see you saying this!
• i hope you do a video like this for every member. would be interesting and i'd particularly like to hear what you have to say about sua. the color of her voice is my favourite in the group and i think she's great, but i also do think at times her technique might not be great? i'm no expert, it's just what i noticed with some live performances (sounding like she's straining at times) so i'd love hearing your thoughts on it
• lastly, are you familiar with sam johnson and his channel? just asking cause i actually used to watch a lot of his vocal analysis videos last year, because the way he gives criticism is just kind of perfect and as someone often struggling with perfectionism it's very helpful to see and helps me with my art. and i think you're very similar to him in that way! so i'm very happy you like dreamcatcher, but i'd probably watch your vocal analysis even if it wasn't about my fave group (so have a great day!)
Yes! Sam Johnson is great. He is very in depth and educational but doesn't cover much K-Pop. He's one of the best vocal coaches on UA-cam for sure! ❤️
Hi, could you also react to mamamoo immortal song medley and the members voices? also some of their songs? they also have a rapper named Moonbyul who just also started singing more since two years ago I think (she also wasn't really confident in her voice same as Dami)
I have to say u got to watch dami and sua's cover of taemin 'move'. I feel like Dami's voice sound amazing there. Also you must react to all B sides of Dreamcatcher thry are sooooo good and you can hear Dami's voice sprinkled in them (some have more of her voice in them than others). Make sure to also look for the colour coded lyrics videos (so you see who sings which part as many times I'm surprised by the way in which Dami was included in the song).
And yes I agree with you 100%. She just needs a vocal coach to help her with her singing and confidence should come with the appreciation of the fans. (she seems like she really wants to sing but is shy and modest about her singing abilities).

I did not watch it yet and probably will do it tomorrow because it's really late here xD but sometimes Dami reminds me of Hani from Exid. Even if hani (picture of her for reference if you at one point will watch the video xD de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hani_(S%C3%A4ngerin)#/media/Datei%3AHani_at_Incheon_Airport_on_August_7%2C_2018.jpg ) does not rap, but the contrast how hani sings for the group and how she normally sound (or should I say can sound if she wants to) is unbelievable.
And I did not got into exid like I did with DC. But maybe with dami it's her confidence or therefore the lack of confidence in her singing skills that she has problems and does not try harder with singing?

Yes, another great video. I love listen to people talking about something they know a lot about and are passionate about. Don't worry not saying only the good things, after all you're not hating but just giving your professional opinion that is really valid.
For me Dami is good singer and can be even better. I don't know much about it but maybe she needs the right song to fit her voice. And of course some vocal training would be good too.
I hope you'll do vocal analysis of the rest of the group too, it's really interesting to watch.
Also even if for now you completely fell for Dreamcatcher I'd like to hear what you think about Minnie and Yuqi from (G)I-DLE. Minnie is known for having soothing and soft voice and Yuqi may not look like it but she has a deep husky voice. Both of them sang 'Scared to be lonely' on some show. But they were singing during they vlives too, so it'll be completely live. Hope you find some time to check it out in the future.

Thank you for this really in-depth review of Dami and her skills! I think if you like her a lot, you'll really like Oh My Girl's Mimi, who's another really skilled rapper with a really interesting vocal timbre. I don't know how you'll feel about the group's musical style? You seem to enjoy Dreamcatcher's dark and powerful sound and Oh My Girl is much lighter and more feminine, but a lot of their tracks have some great power to them. As a huge fan of both groups, I think they're both home to some of the best vocalists and rappers in Kpop, and I'd love to see you react to some of Oh My Girl's work as well. Nonstop is their latest comeback, but Mimi also has her own UA-cam Channel where she does solo/duo covers with other members, and those include raps she's written.

I mostly knew the Adele song and the few non-rap lines she has. Her Deja Vu part is very nice, so in my mind she was a little better. Not not sure, but I think I can hear the difference between speaking voice and singing from your diaphragm. I used to think the difference was breath control and stamina (as people tend to sound out of breath sooner, or like almost).
But how do you actually use your diaphram, and how hard is it to train?
p.s. my only knowledge from singing is from vocal coaches reacting (mostly Floor Jansen / Nightwish Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013 😀). So some is too in depth and not much critique 😁.
I also love reactions to Jinjer (Pisces is a good one to start) and Babymetal reactions can be funny. Julia Nilon is my favorite now (bit of a crush on her), one of the few to react to both Kpop (Mamamoo 😍) and metal. The charismatic voice may also have reacted to both. (So many reactions!).

Good analysis. I think it's only natural to be more critical with Siyeon for instance because we already acknowledge she is amazing so you have to hold her to a varsity level.
