    One of the things I've noticed about the 5 shapes is that they are really the same shape, just with the root starting on a different string and adjusting for the tuning of the B string.

    • @JunkYour925
      @JunkYour925 10 місяців тому +1

      Exactly, they just shift over. Moving One string ( a 4th) over at a time you get G C E A D shapes respectively. Shifting back towards you is fifth movements. Easy to play I IV V progressions in the same location.

    Great lesson. When you combine this pentatonic box 4 with what John Mayer calls the pentatonic equator and the house pattern you get a lot of options for soloing over a good portion of the fretboard.

    Another fanatic lesson Jules. Shapes inspire the licks. No need to memorize licks. 10:10 is Tumbling Dice (waddy Watchel with Linda Ronstadt). Many other classic sounds in there are David Bowie China Girl. Tons more I can’t remember hearing.

    Great video! I have always been intuitively drawn to playing between the 1st and 4th pentatonic boxes so it's good to see that my instincts are good. I'm just barely an intermediate player though so it's a challenge sometimes to switch between the two boxes without having to slow down to count up the frets. Between these two box shapes, and the BB King house box what else do I need!

  • @bmfilmnut
    @bmfilmnut 8 місяців тому

    Maybe it's an British vs. American thing but I was confused for a minute until I realized that your box illustration is upside down compared to any other one I've ever seen. That is, your low string is at the top unlike the usual low string at the bottom. Btw, thanks for posting these videos. You're an outstanding guitarist and instructor.

    Great lesson Jules. Help me out as I thought the A minor (position 4) starting on the low E is 12,15, A is 12,15, D is 12,14, G is 12,14, B is 13,15 and high E is 12,15. Thank you!

    So many people have already said it, but your lessons are awesome. The way you lay everything out is so detailed and easy to understand. Doesn’t mean I’m good enough to play much of it, but….😂 Keep up the great content, Jules.
    While it would be awesome if Jules were to see this and answer, but hoping anyone reading this might know the answer. When he’s doing the cool triplets around 7:48 mark, is he doing two downstrokes on the G and B strings or is he doing a down on the G and an up on the B? When h does it slow he’s clearly doing both downs, but when it’s up to speed I can’t really tell. I’ve always struggled getting those types of licks up to speed, so any bit of wisdom helps.

    Thank you so much, Jules!! I was one of the people requesting overviews of other Pent boxes.
    What is it about Box 4 that makes it the "second most popular"? Curious because it isn't adjacent to Box 1.

    • @SparrowC1
      @SparrowC1 10 місяців тому +1

      It's because it's midway between box 1 and box 1 an octave up. If you extend the bottom strings in box 1 down and the top strings up you've basically covered all the notes you need to get up or down to box 4 and vice versa and that covers the fretboard.

      Dick dale played all his songs using bridge picking

      @@richardrodriguez966 youre welcome sir im glad i could help, also you can experiment with one note, like guthrie govan says use slides and repetitions, u can make one note sound 10 times different just like Gary Moore does and bb king, one good sounding note is better than 10000 fast notes
      Especially in phrygian i love that scale it makes me fly hahaha
      All the best sir ! And jam on !
      And btw i cant read music 🎼 what i do when i play is power on the clip on tuner and play notes and see what they are from the tuner it helps too (best put a pc bios cell in it they last better than the regular ones (Cr2032) last i changed it was 10 months ago, the others less than 2 months
