For those who didn't know (like me loosing many hours trying to figure it out) - you need to be in BRSO piano roll for articulation names to be appeared on color buttons and for midi channels to work!
^^^ Thank you so much, was so confused why my articulations were making no sound when played 👍
0:40 he can link different MIDI colors to different instrument key switches (staccato legato, etc) instead of just changing MIDI channels with colors
= don’t need to open multiple instruments to use the color function
1:10 how to setup BRSO
1:55 set name
2:05 discover which note the key switch you want lies in
So in the VST you can see piano has the “Sustain” in C0
So you input those appropriate values
2:36 once You finish setting up your keyswitches in BRSO with appropriate corresponding note in each VST
Then you can save them
3:16 and in the long run you will save time cus can switch between keyswitches easily with colors now
3:48 what he did in the past and why it was so time consuming & other cons, compared to now
0:40 How did he name the colors?
Wow. I started composing orchestral pieces on FL Studio back in 2002 (I was 14 back then). I remember putting little keyswitch notes on the piano roll (e.g. on C0, C#0, etc.) to trigger those articulations manually. It kind of became a habit, and I'm embarrassed to admit I had kept doing this for too many years after, until watching this. This genius plug-in is a complete game changer!
If you need a fast way, I think, there are 2 alternatives:
1 copy the notes that you want to set to another articulation into another pattern
2 set your tempo to very slow and "add"record the keynotes
But these are workarounds
Alex, thanks for your great tutorials!!

This plugin is a lifesaver! Thank you!
To piggy back on Alex’s excellent tutorial, BRSO has a fantastic feature that allows you to use 64 midi channels in Kontakt 5 (not Kontakt 6 - stuck notes problem) called “MIDI EXTEND.” This means that you can create a single Kontakt Multi with up to 64 separate instruments, and have access to each of instruments in the FL Channel Rack. It might sound like overkill, but many of the String/Brass/Woodwind Libraries in Kontakt have dozens of distinct instruments to cover all the different playing techniques (Legato longs, shorts, etc, etc, etc). You may only use 3 or 4 of the instruments on a project, but it’s a major pain navigating through these libraries trying to figure out which instrument you need. If you create a Kontakt Multi with all of the instruments contained in a particular sample library, then everything can be at your fingertips. In other words, articulations are really just a subset of specific instruments contained in a library, so it’s a 2 step process. You have to know which instrument to choose first (e.g. “expressive legato longs”) and then you can use BRSO to choose articulations with that instrument. SO for example, create ONE Kontakt Multi for the 8Dio Adagio Strings Library. That will contain about 30 instruments. Now that entire sample library can be run under one single instance of Kontakt IF you use BRSO’s Midi Extend feature. For your template in FL Studio, you will create a group in your channel rack called 8DIo Adagio Strings. Load the Multi into Kontakt and purge all samples. Follow the instructions on the BRSO website for Midi Extend. You just need to make a couple of settings after you install Midi Extend (it’s a KOntakt Script). Now there are two tricks that Blake Robinson leaves out of his instructions: First - to activate midi extend on each of the BRSO channel rack instruments, DON’T TRY TO DO IT BY CLICKING ON THE ORANGE RADIO BUTTON because it wont work. To turn it on MOUSE CLICK JUST TO THE RIGHT OF THE BUTTON. This took me hours to discover. Once you activate the BRSO Midi Extend button, you will see that you have 64 midi channels in the scroll box. TRICK 2 - in Kontakt, to set an instrument to channel 17, go the the midi receive box and choose Output Port B, channel 1. DON’T be confused by the fact that Kontakt says that Port B is “unavailable.” Just select Port B, and then select channel 1. Go back to the FL channel rack, BRSO instrument “out” and choose channel 17. In the BRSO channel rack instruments, channels 17 - 30 will correspond to Kontakt’s Port B, channels 1-16. BRSO channels 31-46 will correspond to Kontakt’s Port C, channels 1-16. You get the idea. It surely takes time to set it all up, but once you do, you will have pretty much the whole sample library ready to experiment with in the FL Studio Channel Rack. Since you can purge all the samples, and you are only using 1 instance of KOntakt, this should not cause a major memory or CPU problem (but I haven’t used it enough yet to know). Alex had contributed so much to so many of us - I hope this helps some of you with your music.
i know you posted this a while ago but do you know if it works with kontakt 6 yet?
You're the man! Why did I came across this channel so late. Saving me tons of time! Thank you!
My question is, how doyou control only one brso at a time with dynamics or expression?
I have my template all set up, but every brso moves at the same time.
When i control the cellos, it only controls cellos as far as notes on the keyboard and what gets input into the midi.
But when i try to move the mod wheel, every instruments dynamics move at the same time. How do i control it to only move one instruments modwheel at a time?
how do you name the channels
Personal thanks & best regards, Alex 🙏🏼💯
I came here from your orchestral template video.
Just got komplete 13 collector's but the first thing I noticed in your other video is how big your kontakt window is. I've looked everywhere and I can't figure out how to enlarge the contact window. Everything online people are asking how to make it smaller. Mine is very small and I have to squint and get close to my monitor to see it.
Very Helpful as always! You are the best!
this is the best trick I've ever seen in my life !
I've been using FL since 1999. You've been showing me things that are making my job so much easier. I saw you once add multiple instance in the channel rack (ex: adding 2 or more channels in the rack) , I've been looking for a video where you do that. It drives me nuts now adding once channel insert at a time now that I know you can not only delete multiple insert in channel rack, but also add.
Do you remember what that shortcut is by chance? Thanks for all the videos, you are inspiring me to make my own and share some of my experience in production. Cheers from Louisiana!
Alex, hi. Thank you for your videos. Please tell me what the problem may be, I do not switch articulations when the notes are already written to another articulation, I have to redraw the notes each time to change to the desired articulation. Can something in the settings of the program itself?
Guys I have a question, why I can't open Kontakt window and BRSO Articulate window in the same time? if I open my Kontakt the BRSO Articulate get closed automatically and vice-versa
I hope can someone answer me! thx
There is an alt shortcut or something like that
if you can't get it to work make sure you are adding notes in the BRSO piano roll, not the Kontakt piano roll.
also, make sure your VST Wrapper settings in Kontakt is set to the same input port as Articulate.
How to Expression in Piano Roll.

Thanks!
The articulations I set in BRSO are not shown in the colours in the piano roll.
Can anyone help me?
You have to select the colors at the top left of the FL Studio piano roll each time in your piano roll sequence when you want to enter notes of that color (channel) which is tied to that particular articulation. (The top left box is green but if you click on it you can change it to another color representing each one of 16 different MIDI channels. Once you enter some different colored notes then you can see it work. (Remember to draw your CC's in the control lane by first selecting from the list of Note Pan, Note Velocity, Note Release etc. (on the right side of that box, if you did the following (from a comment above) How to Expression in Piano Roll.
Open BRSO - Open Piano roll (F7) - Rightklick on Expression (or the knob you want) in BRSO - Edit events in piano roll.

so sad brso articulate isnt on imac bruh noooooooo
hey alex how do i assign these brso articulate things into the mixer?
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much.
Great tutorial Alex. Thanks for explaining it and making it as simple as possible. It took a few hours to set this up myself.
What I'm geniunely wondering is why there isn't much easier way to do this in modern DAWs? I feel like whenever I get inspiration to make music, I have to spend ridiculous amount of time with clicking buttons to get this work rather than with the musical instrument.
I know this is a template which is only set up once but I feel like when I need to change one thing or add a new instrument, I have to adjust 100 other things to make sure it doesn't break. For example if I change the channel of one instrument, I have to manually change others so that they do not overlap.
Is it because of the FL Studio or Kontakt? Or is it because old VST format has not been upgraded so that it would talk more easily with the DAW?
It may not be a right comparison but what I would have expected was DAWs to be able to automatically pull the articulations and display them in their own UI to enable the user to control everything centrally without going through many screens.
Hey Alex, thanks for the videos :) It's very possible I just commented on a separate video of yours, but if you (or anyone else) could help me, I'm wondering whether I would be able to record different expressions of single notes as automation using something like a Roli Seaboard. I realize that FL doesn't have MPE support yet, but I'm wondering if this would matter if I were playing monophonic sections rather than polyphonic stuff. I'm looking into SWAM libraries of woodwind, brass, etc--most of which I would imagine playing monophonically, but I would want to be able to record automation of vibrato, pitch bend, etc. of single notes being played and I'm not sure whether this is possible in FL Studio. Hope you're having a good day and thanks for all the tutorials--they're very helpful for me!
I don't see the names in the colours, but it seems to work. Thanks.
Guys, if you're Studio One users and want this articulation feature too, please vote for it in this thread:
answers.presonus.com/19211/concept-articulation-simple-switching-between-articulations
Let's make developers hear us!
Voted mate! great concept!
Yes, recently I also wrote to SO developers with this proposal, because despite the power and better workflow of all those DAWs which are more suitable for professional composing and video syncing, all their sound variations and expression map approach are a complete trash in comparison with BRSO. I cannot understand why some cool features are ignored by developers - the features which were implemented in other DAWs years ago. For me if Image-Line improves the video and notation workflow, FL wil become an ideal DAW))
This is a game changer, grazie mille! 🙏
Hey Alex, thanks so much for all your tutorials. Would it be okay to ask for a tutorial about fanfares, trumpet staccatos, and "tattadadaa!!" that stuff for brass? Another wish is tutorial about string, woods, orchestral runs. Your videos inspired me to join Evenant. Cheers
That's a good idea for a tut.
It's a style I still haven't tackled though, so it might take a while before I make tutorials about it!
Can you use this to simultaneously play two different articulations of the same kontakt instrument instance?
Yes you just need to make sure you have “allow overlapping notes” selected in the BRSO settings
@@Melj945 perfect, thank you!
Hi,
I don't know whether you own any of the EastWest libraries but I tried BRSO Articulate with the EastWest Play engine and it just messed with the tune of my loaded patches...
It's working fine with any of my Kontakt libraries though...
It appears BRSO Articulate is sending some MIDI code that the Play engine doesn't like...
I guess I'll stick with the basic MIDI-OUT plugin to control the EastWest Play engine up until I figure out what's wrong with BRSO Articulate.
Thanks for your great videos, you're a nice composer!
Cya
You don’t even need brso any more! The colored piano roll notes correspond to different midi channels. With ark, you set each articulation to a diff midi channel and voila. For BBC symphony, create an instance for each articulation, and specify a diff midi channel for each. Then use the Layer instrument to group all of those instances. In your layer you can use the colored notes and voila.
how do you set articulation to dif midi channel
@@Diego0wnz Each library is different. With Orchestral Tools and SINE player, whenever you load an articulation, you can pick whether it uses a control key like C1 or to use a dedicated MIDI channel. Then in your piano roll use the right color that corresponds with that channel number. Most libraries have some option like that.
@@electropunkzero hey after setting up key switches, how do I work on a particular articulation in my mixer track? (I want sustain, spicc, pizz, trem in my mixer track after settingup keyswitches)
Yes, I love this plugin! It helps the workflow so much :)
I might wait a little until I use this. I'm using East West libraries and I'm still learning a lot about how to even produce a few seconds of orchestral music. I Downloaded it, but it just makes no sense to me. I'll come back to it later. I want to use it eventually. It sounds like it could help A LOT. I'm just in no position to even understand how it works. Even reading the tutorials and looking up other videos.
how'd it go?
Love this guys accent for some reason.
Thx you 4 all of your time spend to make us better in mao 😊
About the plugin and in the case where 2 instruments wouod be load in the channel, I guess you load 2 instruments strictly identicals ? (for example 2 same violons from ARK)
Because on a my rack and on the same channel I have one from Project Sam and 1 from The Orchestra Complete but I Wonder how to configure them unless modifying the note where articulations are assign (C0 for exemple)... If possible... Thx !
Thanks Alex for your videos! I wonder what's your workflow to record your compositions and humanize them by playing them on a keyboard with BRSO and the different articulations.
I have a big problem ... when i setup brso, i'm able to put the keyswitch in the colors, able to play the kontakt player from brso piano rollo, see the different articulations with the colors, but when i play, the articulation doesn't change ... anyone ?
Update : found the solution, I was setting C0 as key switch, whereas the first key is C-2
Ok so after watching several videos....
You set it up so that you have
Kontakt- strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion
X # of midi outs(brso art) with each brso setup for each instruments keyswitches.
Now each instrument going to mixer
Each section within a section ie. Violas, cellos etc. going to a bus.
Each section strings, brass going its own bus.
With however many buses you need.
Is that correct?
And what about the first kontakt slot?
If you open a new kontakt player, is the first making any sound? Or do you just label it as strings and then start with midi #2 as your first instrument?
Various instruments can be attached to individual colors. It's just that when you attach the articulations, there won't be enough space for the instruments
Hey Alex
How does it work for one-articulation patches ?
Some plugins separate all the articulations in different patches
Ex : Trumpet staccato, trumpet sustain, sustain vibrato etc
Thanks for the tutorial. How did you put a number near the kontakt instance in the channel rack?
Would you share Kontak or FL orchestral template? a good favor to beginners :)
Awesome Plugin. Also using it. You lead me to this Plugin. Thank you Alex! :)
Very helpful, thanks!
Hello guys.
It's strange, it looks like the piano roll and the switches shown in Kontakt are not the same.
I mean that in my piano roll, I'll use for exemple the C2 octave for the key switches.
So If those are played , they indeed change the articulation.
However, if I set the corresponding notes inside BRSO, they don't work, in BRSO I have to use the C0 octave for example.
I don't get how they can not match !
Any idea how to get that done with a MAC? BRSO Articulate seems to be a plugin exclusive for PC users...
Would love to hear if you guys know any alternative!
Thanks
how do i hook it up to the plugin, i can assign everything else but how do i port it?
Alex I hope you can reply and help me because i am becoming crazy. I am using BRSO with Kontakt just like you did, but the articulation changes too slowly. So i have X art. for x note and Y art. for y note.
If i write xxxxyy and repeat two times i will get
xxxxxyyxxxxy
With the articulation set as
XXXXYYXXXXYY
How can i solve this?
Hi Alex!
Do you know does this BRSO Articulate work with Cinesamples CineBrass Core + Pro in FL20 ?
Hello Alex
How do you insert Expression Mod Wheel from Kontakt into Control menu like in 4:48 ?
Quick question. Let's say I have 1 basse pattern in my project in which I can switch between Basse 1 and 2. I want different expression curves for both in the same piano roll. Is that possible?
I have a question. My articulations are working. But the velocity changes i make in brso articulate are not changing. Even when i reduce or increase the velocity of a note in brso articulate, which is linked to the kontakt instrument, it doesn't change. Please does anyone know what i can do?
Hey alex, When i change articulations on BRSO Kontakt doesn't change anything
You probably used the wrong key switches then!
please how can I name my keyswitch when it's not the case ?
alex, how do you map dynamic mod to piano roll controls? would appreciate your answer. Thanks

Hello Alex thnx a lot for this video. But pls tell me, how use BRSO with Orchestral Tools? It dsnt work for me, i dont undrstand why :(
Has anyone made a tutorial on installing BRSO? For the life of me, I can't seem to install it correctly. I've tried reinstalling so many times now & FL Studio still can't locate it :/
It will add it into Your Common files Just rescan once again for plugins
@@AtharvaMohiteMusic I've rescanned LOADS of times, it just doesn't show up. Maybe I'm scanning the wrong folders!? Idk tho, pretty sure I found the right one...

@@me-7 I'm having the same problem
@@simoneseria6460 If you find a solution let me know asap! And I'll do likewise.
@@me-7I fixed It installing It in the same directory as FL Studio. I manually out the files inside the " Effects " and " Generators " folders
Hi, I use Reaper, and followed all this steps but the midi editor has a problem: any time I enter a note on piano roll, it alternates between long notes and very short ones that I can't enlarge (they are fixed length), 1st is a 1/8 note, 2nd a 1/64, 3rd 1/8, 4th 1/64, and so on...it's the brso script that makes this because when I deleted it, the issue disappeared and I can enter all 1/8 notes normally and set the lenghts to taste.
Thanks Alex
Hero
Thank you for this EPIC plugn!!!!!
By the way - does anyone have issues with Sine player made by Orchestral Tools, BRSO Articulate and latest FL Studio update?
How do you control the dynamics of each? For instance what of you want soft staccato getting louder while a legato starts loud and gets soft?
Actually there are all controllers in the BRSO GUI. You may create and set them as you wish...
Anyone able to change the channel volume via the channel rack? I'm unable to
Ive been having issues to connect the modulation wheel of my keyboard to BRSo articulation
Hi I need some help with the setup of BRSO articulate. I´ve routed the plugin correctly but the spitfire albion I preset doesn´t work for the articulations though the keyswitches are correct. Any advise?
u need to lock settings of loaded library to uacc cs and then edit brso articulations to current velocity of articulations of albion.
How does he use BRSO with expression curves is all I care ab
i'm using FL Studio 20.5.1.1193
it seems keyswitches are no longer send to the target port. Notes are working fine but colors are no longer switching the articulations. Is this a known problem?
NO bro its working
How i will manage articulation in kontakt session strings
Please reply
Except that BRSO doesn't fully work with every sample library. For example, CSS articulations won't be triggered by the plug-in. But CineBrass on the other hand, does. Even Metropolis Ark 1. The 9 Horns patch doesn't work, but the Trumpets patch work. Mind explaining why?
That's weird, every metropolis ark 1 patch seems to work for me, even 9 horns.
Their keyswitches are placed in a different octave than the one of the trumpets however.
I might be wrong, but it may be possible that you're not setting the right notes in the keyswitch setup!
Check the real key id under the "File, Add, Patterns, View, Options, Tools, ?" menu. If you see where the key switch is, look at the ID, it's a number like 24 or 36. Write that ID on the BRSO, otherwise it won't work. Make sure you choose the correct key.
TL;DR: If you see that the keyswitch is C#0, be careful, it might really be C#-2 on BRSO.
>Thanks in advance
Ciao pikasfed,
Hey Alex, how can i set up this Plugin for East West Symphonic orchestral?
hi.. is there anything similar to this that i can use in protools?? articulating using keyswitches take so much of my time and i want to spend the valuble time in creativity rather than figuring out what key switch i need to use for an articulation..
Pro Tools is just not as Professional as FL Studio I'm afraid (only kidding :D
Anyone knows If this works for Hypersonic 2 and Sample Tank 2 on Reaper??
I like your accent man.
Hey Alex! Thanks for the helpful video. I just posted an orchestral piece on my channel. How do y'all like it?
Hey Alex, hope you doing good, how do I set this plugin BRSO Articulate with miroslav Philharmonik 1, if you ever used the plugin.
Just like you set up any other plugin following the approach I explain in this exact video.
You can only do it if the plugin you're using has patches with keyswitches though, I haven't tried Philarmonik so I don't know if it does.
alex i have a doubt, how do you write different articulations in to one pattern
You program the articulation back and forth in the piano roll.
