The Thrust SSC is probably reaching the maximum land speed you can do. You have to go to salt lakes and dry deserts to break these records. To go faster you would need to have a lower air pressure, and don't think there are places.
Andrew, they already have made something a lot faster. The Bloodhound SSC. It uses a Eurojet EJ200 engine to push it to around 600mph, then switches to a hybrid rocket cluster to push it to a target speed of 1,050mph. It's planned to make an 800mph test run later this year to make sure everything works like it should, and to test the car's capabilities. There's an entire website with a lot more info than I have, for those of you who are interested in finding out more.

this car was driving in the desert and the air was less humid or whatever
Relative humidity. You can see it (invisibly along the sand surface) in overhead pictures.

The true answer is.. It depends.
There is no actual figure. It depends on the temperature, pressure, and altitude.
At sea level it varies between around 750 mph and 780 mph. At 36000 feet it's around 660 mph.
That gives you an idea of how much it varies.
