The events take place in 1948. The village boy Kabir, along with a lame mare nicknamed Bamboo, embarks on a difficult and dangerous journey. They need to get to their native village in order to save Kabir's mother, the widow of a front-line soldier Saniya, from prison. She is accused of damaging Soviet property - she is credited with the murder of a collective farm horse. With this slander, the brigadier takes revenge on Sanya for her rejected feelings. Only the boy knows the truth: far from home, in another village, a wolf attacked a horse, but she survived. And to prove it, the boy must bring the mare back and give it to the collective farm.
