Brad, good luck buddy. Those mites are bad news for sure. I treat with OA and I put Apivar strips in on July 4th on some of my colonies. I plan on using Apiguard on the rest as soon as the honey comes off. Hope your season is going good. Take care.
I hope it works out for you. I am going to start treating my bees this weekend up here in West Virginia. I only use Oxalic Acid on mine and it seems to do well for me. Hope you have a great rest of the week buddy.
Ouch!!! Sounds like you have a good plan and I think you’ll like the strips because I got really good results from them last year. Leave them on for 60-70 days. I will be putting mine on next weekend
Definitely time for OA or Apiguard depending on temps. I had count of 15 in one hive. Treated and in 4 weeks dropped to 5. Wish they never came! any sing of DWV?
I just did a state inspection today. Inspected 41 colonies. Zero mites or pests. Zero disease or viruses. I never treat with chemicals. It blows my mind how some can have issues and some dont. Truly amazes me how it works for some and not for others. I have about a 5-10% loss rate if that. But im in central TN. So maybe thats why? Either way good luck man. Hope it works out.
I bet your wild weather has contributed to the numbers. Brad, I'd blast them with OA ever 3 or 4 days for 3 or 4 treatments and make some strips to keep the numbers down once you get them down. The 3 to 4 day spacing over 3 or 4 treatments you will statistically hit the largest % of mites in the hive as they emerge. If you run the treatments through a complete brood hatching cycle you can't help but get dead mites.
14 is not crazy bad, but it is time to treat. the oa pads are doing a great job for me. I will be doing teats next week. the strips take a long time to work, you might want to knock them down with something first. OA vaper a few times 2-3 days apart would help
Morning Brad, they are your bees keep them your way buddy.👍Keepers need to quit apologizing for keeping their bees their way, If someone doesn't like it oh-well. Don't fear the mite Brad.🤗I'd just blast them mites,🤔no big deal blast them tell they stop dropping 😉OA is good for honey bees, bad for mites.😁 🤔I just watched a dumb video on YT, morons dry poring a slab of concrete and thinking it'll last.🤣Sorry had to get that "dumb idea" out of my head I think it was making me dumber.😂
Hey Brad, question for ya. I noticed you did a alcohol wash. Last year when I tested my first colony I did a Powder Sugar "wash" . I only have 1 hive so keeping as many bees alive is crucial for me. Have you tried this method before?
@@KajunHomestead it seemed to work well. I didn't have an issue and only lost 2 or 3 bees instead of a few hundred. And the bee's get a treat for getting their brains shook, all while the mites get stuck to the sugar and are not able to hang on any longer. I only found 2 mites from about 300 or so bees.
I used OAV last year, but it didn't do enough to knock out the mites and I lost 10 hives to the mites. I was planning to do treatments after I take off honey this weekend. I'm gonna use OA and Apivar to start in the hot weather and then use Apiguard when temps Drop. Thanks for the comment.
Absolutely Brad. The bees that we're protecting now will be the bees that raised the winter bees. Looking forward to seeing your planning and results.
Thank Brad, I'm not looking forward to doing my first mite check, but watching you is helping me be more comfortable with the idea of it.👍
Thanks buddy glad to help out anyway I can, good luck.

Thanks , I’ll be doing follow ups to see how well it’s working.

I’m doing that now, hopefully I can get them down.

No always wanted to try but never did, saw a few videos on it seems to work from what they say.

Great video Brad! Very informative! Kill those mites!
Your bee's should be treated in June. What happened to you last yr?

Glory to mites
You need Puerto Rican Africanized. Gentle Africanized honey bee
Awe, I'm so sorry. I have only two hives and it brakes my heart to hear when someone is loosing their bees.
Thank you so much, I hate loosing my bees and I'm going to do as much as possible to save the rest.
