  • In this video I do a walk through while checking the cows in our winter hay bale grazing system. I talk about cattle and the weather, the need (or lack thereof) for a physical shelter, bale feeding methods, mineral requirements, and whether cows can lick snow for water. Enjoy!

Any content you out out from trapping, logging and cattle I’ll be sure to support. I might not be a cattle farmer but I was a small grain farmer, I love cutting firewood, and your podcast’s really got me into trapping Jeremiah. Thanks for sharing your videos with us

What a difference in the weather between Maine and Nova Scotia. We struggled with bale grazing and went back to bringing out a load at a time and placing them closer to feeding time. We seem to get way more rain and milder temps in winter with more freezing/thaw cycles and way more ice. A heads up-gathering the twine in the fall is time very well spent. The twine goes in the one end but not out the other. Problem only shows up months/years later. It presents like a hardware issue in the cows. We use heavier(10,000 poly) twine and only use half as much on the bales. Ties way faster while baling hay and less to gather up before feeding. After bale grazing for 20+ years and building productive permanent pastures we hate to smother out the perennial sod by focusing too much activity in one place so we only feed a few bales in any one place at a time. Our cattle still travel for water every day. They don't drink much but they still make the trip. All our paddocks are bordered by softwood stands for windbreaks and were we place weekly load of bales depending on weekly storm forecasts. We cut logs/Christmas trees on the farm most of the fall/winter so we are around home to work with the weather. Good luck this calving season. kv

Hey Kevin, great to hear your perspective! Yes very different weather. What you describe sounds a lot like much of maine south of where I'm at. We are lucky to stay below freezing all winter and snow is soft and dry. This year is an exception with warmer weather.

Hello my friend. The animals look amazing. I want to ask something. What do you use to feed your animals? Do you only feed grass? I may have spelled it wrong because I wrote it with a translation 😊. I will be happy if you answer.

Hello and thanks for the comment! Yes, these animals are only fed grass. They graze the pasture in summer and hay bales in winter. We do not give them any grain or feed supplements.

@@cattleview Let me ask you one more question? Do animals always stay outdoors in winter and freezing cold weather?
