New copypasta: I'll say this a million times for everyone who is afraid of reselling: high fashion is NOT a privilege AND as someone who worked in a goodwill I can tell you a hundred percent that there is no shortage of cheap clothes for people who need it. Resellers almost always leave the store with the same amount of stuff, OR LESS than you, because they only take high value items and get paid to style and shop for their clients. BEST OF ALL, goodwill and literally every other thrift store ever, carefully sorts thru donations and puts aside any item they think are of high value and sells them online for a higher price AKA the stores do 90% of the reselling before anything even becomes available to the general public and they get their items for FREE! Resellers pay for their items which feeds the buisness and allows them to continue recycling clothes for the public. Reselling does not make thrifting any less affordable. if anything, the worst it does is make thrift stores put more research into the value of their items so that high value items aren't mistakenly put out for pennies. It's such a comparatively non-issue and y'all gotta stop talking about what's good for poor people on a phone or laptop that was created via cobalt slave mining in the congo and sweatshop labor in China.

If I'm already buying second hand, why the fuck would i buy the shit that isn't going to last? Crap with holes in? I have an exception for stuff I can fix but still.
Don't see Resellers buying the basics.
They take all the best stuff . That's a fact
It's not a crime to want nice things ffs. Stop shaming people
Resellers actually wouldn't bother me ... but they put everything online causing thrift stores TO RAISE PRICES. Fact.
Even the basics are more now.

    • @FiresAndFoxes

@HillbillyYEEHAA I worked for a reseller for 6 months and watched them pick up lots for their clients including basics and no matter what theres still always a surplus of everything. Also you're making an extreme acting like the only two options at the thrift are either high value or full of holes which just isn't true. Goodwill sorts thru and will throw away anything that's too ratty. Goodwill is plenty affordable. Just yesterday I found a crazy nice pair of Levi's in a sought after size for 6$. If I was a reseller I could put them up for 40 min but I'm not and that's proof that anyone can go and find affordable deals. The guy in front of me had two pairs of nice carhartt jeans. Yall are just dealing with inflation and acting like a change in price lies solely on the shoulders of some broke college kids that go treasure hunting and then sell their loot. I do the same I just collect instead of resell and that makes me better how?

It still lowers the bar for that same supply and demand for the normal goodwill customers. It thins out the real, quality items because resellers won't want to resell those, and suddenly whatever is available is nothing but junk because the resellers hoard all the good items. The resellers take all of the quality items instead of just the items that are quality to them that they'll use and that leaves less for those who actually want to find something valuable they'll use rather than gain profits off of. There's no "treasure hunting" concept anymore.

For instance I have sold a 4 pieces of stainless flatware for $100. When you pay 20 cents for a fork, that's an amazing return.
I love hunting for rare things others know little to nothing about, marketing them making them easy to find and shipping them all over the world.

We never bought like cross, Nikes, name brand etc. Y'all just want to hate. You really think goodwill cares about the homeless and really poor? I bet you they kick homeless out all the time thinking they're stealing. And what do they donate? Do they do food drives? Soup kitchen? I mean you'd think it's their mission to help the less fortunate right? Nope, it's actually just to REHOME secondhand items. You realize that has to mean to whoever will pay the price. This means that poorer people can't afford many of these items, despite thrift stores being for the less fortunate.

Our thrift stores even sell donated dollar store items for a higher price than buying them at the dollar store new.

Content creators who post profits from sales of thrift store finds are one of the reasons that prices are sky-rocketing!
Thrift-store-find creators are focused on earning income through ads on their videos, not their eBay sales.
Their videos are created to fascinate viewers of their profits to keep them coming back to their channel. They are misleading.
After watching dozens of shorts, I’m yet to be impressed by a supposed find (many appear to be planted) and their profits especially because I’m aware of the fees, costs, and time spent.
This sale was not impressively profitable! It did not make an easy $45 profit. After seller fees, transportation costs, packing materials the profit was around $30 or less if the seller paid for additional promotion.
Time spent on this sale - traveling to the store and back, cleaning, photo-taking, listing, communicating, packing, and shipping - might have been up to 1.5 - 2 hours.
That means the seller earned $20 (highball estimation) an hour or less. That’s close to fast food wages.

Most thrift stores throw out more than 50% of what they put out bc there’s just so much, so trust me, the less fortunate can get nice stuff too, they just gotta look for it. Blame the stores looking to cash in, not the resellers, bc there’s PLENTY to go around.

I would question why Goodwill charges 35 dollars for something they got for free! Goodwill prices are ridiculous! The ceo made over 700k in 2022!

While in my early 20’s I was a single mom. I was so broke. I went to a goodwill to buy my daughter a new jacket for winter. There was barely any kids clothes to choose from and the only Jacket there that would fit her was $50! It was a good brand and all but it literally broke me. I started to tear up in the isle because I felt like a failure who couldn’t even afford a goodwill coat for my kid. I pulled myself together and got the courage to ask the cashier if there was any way to bring the price down but she said she wasn’t “authorized” to do that. I left with no jacket. I’m very grateful to be in a better place now… haven’t been a fan if Goodwills recently.

I’m genuinely sorry to hear that, but there’s plenty of organizations out there that would have been more than happy to give you a coat for free. A simple Facebook post asking for help with kids clothes would overwhelm you with responses. Aside from that, Walmart has kids coat options from like $15-30

@@DealingWithDalton right?? I was so surprised she didn’t help me. I even offered to show her my bank account and pay stubs. I did end up getting a coat elsewhere.

Everybody’s on here blaming the resellers. You should blame the thrift stores. They’re the one driving up the prices. Just because people are reselling stuff doesn’t mean they have to up their prices.

I hate Goodwill, when you only give 2% of the whole entire companies, profit back to charity and you have the audacity to charge the amount of money that you do for products you should be damn near shamed of yourself

I hate goodwill with a passion. As a kid, i loved thrifting. Now i stick to garage sales and local secondhand shops because goodwill is evil.

I’m going to start thinking twice about dropping off my nice things to the Goodwill store.A lot of people are trying to take advantage of others! Wow!

Poor people can’t even have nice things anymore because of resellers. I had a Calvin Klein coat for $12 and I got so many compliments. It lasted a long time. It also made me feel good to have something nice and not the cheap clothes I normally had to buy that get holes, tears, loose fibers, etc after 2 wears.
Also they are ruining the gaming and collecting market. It’s like to get anything nice you have to pay extra for it. Like during the pandemic I couldn’t find a Nintendo switch in store. When I looked online people were selling it for double or triple the price. I could get selling for an extra $100 or so for profit but u shouldn’t be making enough to buy the thing 3 times over.

To anyone claiming resellers are why thrifting has become expensive, this is not correct. For one this has ALWAYS been a thing happening period. Resellers are not new nor is it a boom. thrift stores are not emptied EVER and have an endless supply. They do not need to raise prices bc of this. They do not fall into supply and demand, instead what’s happening here is called PRICE GOUGING and is ILLEGAL and needs reported when seen. Resellers only make them more money so they can’t use that as the excuse either. Don’t let the thrift stores that are doing this to pass the buck and blame resellers. That’s not ok bc it takes the attention away from the actual illegal price gouging. Your local counselor and attorney general needs a report when you see it. Please know the thrift stores KNOW this
