Did you notice the sunburst effect emanates from the branding on the dial? Masters of detail 😍

Very good eye, Ben. The watch just looks fantastic (trust breguet for always being detail oriented) Thanks for the comment!

While I think the previous generation of the Marine series had more of a classic Breguet aesthetic with the lugs, I think they new generation adds just a tiny bit of modernism that injects a bit of life in the line. I find myself liking it more and more as I see more pictures of it. Thanks for sharing @IDGuy

I said it during the live stream and again now: this must the most well-executed design of roman numerals I've ever seen. The second, for me, is the Alpine Eagle, I just love those numerals, although people like to hate that watch. Just one small correction @IDGuy, AFAIK marine chronometers were used (and originally created to solve the problem) of precisely calculating longitude only. Latitude was already possible with other techniques and instruments.

Could you give me some clues about why they put a hole in XII, but not in XI nor IX?

    • @aromaticsnail
      @aromaticsnail 4 роки тому

@@twistarlight8403 I honestly hadn't noticed that. I honestly don't know. Being Breguet I'd be very surprised it was an oversight. My uneducated guess is to make the XII marker more distinguishable from IX and XI under light

That Breguet model that appears at 1:07 into the video... absolutely breathtaking!! And the ability of the watch to go from bracelet to leather strap (6:22 - 6:30 in the video) is amazing. I think maybe the best I have seen for a watch that is able to change its tone from a sports watch to a dress watch. Well done, Breguet! How could anyone choose a Rolex over this one??? Simply brilliant design and execution in a watch.

Brilliant review. This watch needs to be seen in person to be appreciated.

Great write-up, IDGuy. IMHO, the Breguet Marine is the watch that A. Lange & Söhne SHOULD have paid more attention to when they were developing the Odysseus, because I believe they would have been more successful.

yet Odysseus is more successful on the grey market

Odysseus goes for a completely different style & heritage from this watch. What could Lange have learnt from this watch?

Wow! Something new in the watch world that steps beyond a coloured bezel! Great to see you covering these special watches - too overlooked!

Some watch makers you just help but respected. Breguet is surely one of them. They make the kind of watches that you "secretly fall in love with" so to speak.

I feel like this is how AL&S should have tackled their first sports watch. The 5517 is the quintessential blue sports watch in my eyes, and I feel that it is the price tag (MSRP wise) that keeps it from being mentioned more often (IMO, also with Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms or Bathyscaphe). Great analysis as always Mr. IDGuy!

I am looking seriously at this piece. I’m considering selling my Exp ll polar and JLC sector and continuing my curation. That would take me to two pieces: this Breguet and a rose gold H Moser small seconds.

Marine chronometer style watches have always been my favourite time pieces, my grandfather had these types of clocks everywhere in the house when I was growing up. My grail watch will be in this style... hopefully a Breguet. Very interesting to see lume in the Roman numerals although I have to say I prefer plain and sharp black. I’m edging towards a Stowa marine classic 36mm which will probably be my next purchase. Great video as always and I look forward to live stream on Saturday evening 👍🇬🇧

I’m a fan of the Marine on that bracelet. Need to see it in person. Variety is what I enjoy about this hobby for better or worse.

Another well stated review. I have always wondered taking a hard look at the marine chronograph of this series and asked what the story was and who the audience for it is. Some elements seem polarizing such as the Baume and Mercier-esq hands and the treatment of the numerals. All this and still with a strong identify to codes like the coin edging of the case, propeller crown guards, the integration of the lugs...I get a steam punk vibe coming from the view of the movement too and strangely I am liking it more and more. So maybe this is for us WIS nuts, who can appreciate that a chronograph need not have a column wheel to be work of art, and that high watch art need not require a Geneva Seal. Thank you.

Very unique and beautiful, but I would still get the Blancpain Bathyscaphe, which is a true sports watch with cues from dress pieces.

I like it without lume on the numerals. The lumed version looks like a Roman ransom letter. In my opinion the 5817 is a better looking watch in almost every way (one I considered as my one watch for life) and successfully combines dress and sport. Interesting video. I appreciate your perspective.

When you put a watch on a bracelet, it means that it is a dress watch.
Because when you dress a watch up you want it to be minimal. A bracelet is shiny and takes the attention from the watch
So i think it can be used as a dress watch with a leather strap but in the essence of it, its a sports watch.

These watches are very much attainable. Their grey market prices are very low. You should buy when they are still not desired. IDGuy, get yourself a Breguet for your first luxury watch instead.
Btw, the way Breguet design their watches are not simple like you said. What they think is "is this a watch design AL Breguet would have made?". After that, a historian Immanuel Breguet will approve the watch design whether it is acceptable as a 'Breguet family' watch.
Other than Blancpain, the Swatch group knows how to pay homage to the brand's legacy. (No one actually understands BP. Not even their CEO knows, now it is just a high-end Swatch brand with a label Blancpain)

Very interesting design and video but i do not like it for myself. There is no real relationship between the bracelet and the watch. The coin sides are interesting but looks like the side would catch your sleeve. Looks thick for no clear reason.

Asides from both being "sporty watches", there literally zero
similarities between the two. Literally none. What's there to even
      compare?
