The dad in the movie is a Funny comedian named Robin Harris. He was supposed to host the first ever def comedy jam but he passed away before it could happen and a young Martin Lawrence who plays in this same movie, took his spot instead.
When I think about how young he was and how much work we lost when he died it breaks my heart all over again. Losing him was as big a hit to comedy as Buddy Holly's was to music.

I grew up in the north of England, rural Yorkshire. And I remember back in 91 when I was ten, my friend Shane asked me and a few other friends if we wanted to go his house after school to see house party on old vhs. Man, did it blow our minds lol. I would like to share that this was one of my favorite movies - like most of the ones y’all have suggested…I’m thinking my people are up in here. I was born in 81 and I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade when this premiered. My friends mom took us too the movies when it came out and she stormed us out of there when the big guy and his lady were getting busy 😂 Anyway, this was the first time I heard the name Sydney associated with a girl. I knew one Sydney who was a boy, and Sydney Poitier who was obviously also male. And since this movie I loved the name Sydney for a girl. Well guess who named their daughter Sydney? I did y’all. When my girl asked me where I got that name from and I told her it was a movie from the 90’s I got the side eye 😂😂😂 Thankfully she likes her name.

Robin Harris, who portrayed Kid's father, unfortunately passed away about a month after this film was released in 1990. Before this film, he made appearances in Keenan Wayans' I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA, Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, and Eddie Murphy's HARLEM NIGHTS among others. He's also most famous for his "Bebe's Kids" routine. An animated film "BEBE'S KIDS" was based on his routine. SInce Harris had already passed away before the film was made, comedian Faizon Love provided the voice of his character in the film. It was released in 1992 and received some pretty good reviews. The comedy in it was awesome.
Fun fact, the song that Kid was doing his dance tutorial to was recorded by the group of three bullies that antagonized him throughout the movie. They were a music group.
I don’t think I’ve enjoyed any other reaction commentary as much as this one at the end 😂 I got involved with a guy who started out like kid and ended up like Play.
