Honestly, in my opinion its how well the youtube algorithm wants you to get on someone's recommendation page, you may be the smartest person in the world but the youtube algorithm might not like your content and won't recommended it, like you for example, your work is amazing but you don't have as much recognition as the people that for some reason have 100k+ subscribers with a lucky chance that their one video blew up, but this video is really helpful, thank you

To all those small youtubers remember there is no elevator to success you have to take the stairs (meaning it will take time to grow but do not give up) from a very small youtuber!
it really depends on what the viewer watches frequently. Someone that only watches like adopt me won't get bloxburg on their rec page. also, i follow a bunch of small bloxburg yters and i find a new one like every 3 days
