Okay so this is a speed run people. I cover the first half of the 20th C. but I only hit the highlights as it pertains to Contemporary Art. Contemporary ARt both builds on and rebels against Modernism. To see where you are going your have to know where you've been so I hit Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Suprematism, Abstraction and Surrealism, but only the part that pertain to Contemporary Art. Finally we set the stage for the triumph of Modernism in the Post WW2 era. Along the way I make unintentional Dad jokes and give lyric suggestions to Billie Eilish.
I am so happy that I've discovered these lectures. Thank you so so so much, as someone who refuses to spend any amount of money on college. I'm learning something I'm passionate about, the teacher is clear, concise, and careful. Amazing.
Hahahah I love your combination of humor and your abundance of knowledge, the part about My Little Pony was great!
Thank you for the lecture. I enjoyed the concise overview and especially liked the anecdotes. I do however have to point out two inaccuracies that could lead to misconceptions.
1. The only consensus among interpretations of Nietzsche is that he was not a nihilist. All of his literary life he had been railing against dogmas and the loss of meaning in general. His end goal being a rediscovered vitality.
The memebers of Der Blaue Reiter paid homage to Nietzsche's attitude in their imaginative and experimental art.
2. The Russian Civil War was not yet about the bolsheviks fighting amongst themselves. Rather it was about the bolsheviks fighting against anybody else.
Thank you. I really appreciate you making these lectures available for everyone. I am an artist, this is a great resource
Excellent lecture in every sense of the word.
Binge watching these. Thank you.
To me, I think Dadaism can be seen as a funnel that other movements must pass through. If that is denied then Dadaism is not receiving the importance it deserves. To me it seems that it was the launching pad for Conceptual Art, which is tremendously important as the basis for Art as a thing.
bravo
25:37 So awesome omg
A VERY realistic painting requires no imagination. Hence we see motel art.
Light direction seems to be the only constant. Get we can bend light.
Lol. He is nuts
8:30 - Die Brucke - the bridge....to somewhere better....like the First World War....the world pandemic of 1918....WWII....The H*l*c**st....and the atom bomb. But yeah - hey. Who am I to, etc. etc.
I appreciate your content and admire your courage. I'm sorry that this is my first comment BUT can we please stop referring to the totality of Africa, a whole continent with diverse groups of people in it, as if it is a country. Surely we are better than that. Thanks again for coming out about this very difficult struggle.
Sadly too often conceptual "art" or contemporary experimental "music" is just antiart and antimusic. It is probably I many cases the epitome of human stupidity (I am saying it in its technical use).
