Great video. Just one note, the C70's high frame rate at 4K is 120p I believe (the graphic said 60p at 6:28). Both are great tools of course, but 16 stops of dynamic range, accurate colors, and those internal NDs (and not to mention the price) puts the C70 in a different class for me.
Great points :) For 4K 120 you have to switch to slow and fast mode. I tried to differentiate by saying you can shoot “normally” in 4K60 but I guess I wasn’t being clear!
The C70 has 13 stops of dynamic range according to Xyla/Imatest standard, which is still outstanding given it's a super 35 sensor. And According to ChromaduMonde CamAlign, colors are accurate but lean toward magenta. There is no face detect AF at 120p.
Dynamic range vs the A7S III is a wash. I recently did a comparison of both of these cameras on my channel, and in all honesty there’s little between them. I’ll agree, the built in NDs with no color shift is a big deal. Especially if you plan to shoot outdoors under bright conditions. I should be getting in the Sony FX6 soon and plan to compare it to the Canon C70, feel free to sub if you’d like to be informed when that video goes up. Imo, both the A7S III and the Canon are fantastic cameras. Hard to go wrong with either
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 That wasn’t much of a comparison. A comparison like this would be more useful: ua-cam.com/video/MCfmueEx6uc/v-deo.html Or like this etc: ua-cam.com/video/4tS6Qle16-0/v-deo.html
13 stops, which is about the best you can get usable out of 10bit log. Canons marketing is intentionally very misleading here and talks about the sensor instead of the camera. Unless some raw recording is enabled in the future, you cannot get those 16 stops recorded. With that said, 13 stops is good enough for most shots and many who own C300 don’t use the raw option because they never needed it.
Have you gotten the chance to test the color profiles? Would love to see a deep dive video of the c70’s recording options, how it handles different lighting situations, and your take on which one you prefer. Great video!
Sony Log-3 and Cinetone give great results. Canon as always is more red, and you could argue better out of the box. With 4:2:2 pro res you can get what ever you want in a grading package like Davinci Resolve at the end of the day. Conetone is 2 stops more shallow, but a gorgeous Sony profile right out of the box. All the log 3 profiles from manufacturers give you some help. The monitor help of the Canon is better than the Sony. But for a guy like me, an EVF is essential, so I dont rely on monitors from any of my cameras. If you want Sony with ND, get the FX6 or FX9. That system is world class best. The right answer among all the options is the one that fits your workflow and your shooting needs. Any of the 4 cameras mentioned by me is a huge step up from what came before. Consider your budget, your current commitments, your workflows, and your customers if you have any, and decide for yourself. Because the biggest win of all is you being happy with the bag of benefits you chose to live with.
Usable dynamic range in internal recording is very similar, about 13 stops, limited by what you can actually get usable out of ten bit log. The ProRes Raw (12 bit log) should have an edge up for shooters who bother with external recording on a7s3. Gerald Undone only covered internal recording and considered their DR very similar.
I feel so shortsighted in this, but I have such a soft spot for full frame sensors. It’ll be interesting to see how the C70 performs when the speedbooster is released. 👍
Hi! That’s a great question. Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot outside much with the C70 so I’m not the right person to answer that question. Have you seen Gerald Undone’s C70 video? He talks a bit about how the C70 and a7siii dynamic range compare. I believe he concluded that they perform similarly with the c70 having a slight advantage.
@@LilPackrat thank you for referring to that video. It completed some question I had. Great job on the review/gear channel so far. Look forward to more content in the future.
I’d like to see how are doing with the C70 in on the run productions. What kit, how you can manage with one person. Good job, I watched it again, I’m waiting on the C70
Genuinely surprised at how strong the A7siii preformed in these tests. I've pretty much always been team Canon but videos like this prove team Sony is far from loosing
Great comparison video! I'm still unsure which one I'd go for lol. It's hard cause I'm already in the Canon eco-system of lenses shooting on their DSLR's but I've been wanting to upgrade to a real video camera with 4k capability, good autofocus for run n gun and no arbitrary recording time limits. Which both seem to have. BTW I loved the Pokeball lens cap on your Sony A7s😁
I was in the same situation but went the A7S III route and I'm very glad with the choice I made. It's a real joy working with it and the image is just perfect in all modes. At night it's amazing, I don't know how I could wish for more
@@sebastianbalog Glad to hear you're enjoying your A7siii, thanks for the insight! How has your experience been working with it in post? I've heard the codecs could be pretty resource intensive.
Haha it’s always nice when people notice the Pokémon lens caps! Sounds like the Canon R5 would’ve been perfect for you if it didn’t have the recording limit and overheating. Hopefully canon puts out something that meets your needs in 2021 :)
@@TomoDigital I found it very easy to process in post but I didn't try the h.265 compressed codec. The other 2 codecs were easy to edit without proxies.
In general, the autofocus on the Sony is much more reliable. With the Canon C70 I’ve found that I need to help it a bit by pointing it at a very obvious vertical edge to grab focus whereas it’s pretty effortless to get the Sony to focus on most things. When it comes to face tracking, as you saw in the video, both work nicely. Hope that helps!
The Sony FX6 is the proper direct comparison to the C-70. Both are in the same price range, and both offer professional features. In fact the Sony clearly pulls ahead with timecode, and some other features missing on the Canon. I also find the Canon to be quite washed out and lacking in color depth. Where as with the FX6 color depth is correctable to an insane degree without over sharpening or boosting contrast too far. It is fine to be a Canon fan, I was for decades. I still own a lot of Canon glass. But in all fairness you should compare systems in the same price range. Another possible fair comparison would be the R5 to the A7 S III. And I think that comparison would still put the Sony slightly ahead again, but it would be more of a true comparison. Cheers.
Thanks! I waited to order the c70 until after I saw reviews of the fx6. It looks fantastic and I love that it's full frame, but the reason I chose c70 was for the user interface, user experience. For me, a camera that's small and easy to use is the most important thing since they all produce an image that's good enough for me. The C70's touchscreen is really user friendly, it's small, I like the image straight out of camera, and importantly the audio inputs are on the body of the camera and doesn't require the top handle :)
Yup the ol' EOS R, RF 35mm F1.8 lens. Settings: standard IPB, 30fps, neutral picture style - so no special settings, it just looks great straight out of camera!
ND's + Audio + natural color rolloff = C70 FF + Cheap + High ISO = A7siii FF really is more of a lens option. s35 shooting at 2.8 is what is the most common DOF cinematographers light to. If you don't want that standard or you already have ff lenses, go FF otherwise don't be concerned. No one can tell a shot is ff or s35 anyway, nor do they care. Blame the internet for FF pretend hype. It only allowed me to stop down a bit to a better lense quality otherwise zero difference (except massive weight/size difference)
Great question! The C70 does not have a physical mechanism for stabilization inside the camera body (no in-body stabilization). However, it can apply stabilization digitally by cropping into the image to remove some of the shake (has digital stabilization). Hope that helps!
Netflix should be ashamed of herself for not approving a7siii yet. Dude... that camera has better image quality than c70! Audio? Use an external recorder anyways for a pro job like a Netflix original production
Love the video. Which did you prefer overall? If you could have only one? I plan to do a comparison with the Sony FX6 soon (if Sony ever starts shipping again), so feel free to sub if you are curious. Keep up the good work!
Thanks :) and subbed! Hmm I think I’d have to pick the Sony at the moment but that’s because it’s truly hybrid so I use it a lot more. My goal is to shoot mini documentaries one day so I think the c70 will be great for that purpose.
I would suggest getting the speed booster if you have EF lenses. You can get “close” to the C300 mk 2 large sensor performance. This makes the C70 even more versatile of a camera! The A7s3 is great for those grab n’ go slow mo action ramp shots with the autofocus being great! It’s a toss up to kit out if you do stills too I guess the R5 and C70 make sense as a combo because the time code & pro features on the FX7 and C70 make them more suitable for video centric work. Now throw in a Red Komodo and get even more confused! We have a lot of options. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, YOU’RE DOING A GOOD JOB.
Excuse me, that’s a C-500 mk2 look! If Canon makes RAW available via external recorder you just saved (sorta) $10k or so minus speed booster and recorder like an Atomos! I meant to put C500 mk2 it does look close EXCEPT not quite as good of depth of field blur, but you can open up to max to get better bokeh! I do love C500 mk2 and it grades to Arri LF very easily or Red Monstro-but speed booster and DGO is really good making it close!
