I was in the US Air Force stationed at Torrejon AFB 16 km from Madrid from '73 - '77. Over that time we explored a lot of Madrid, finding the city full of culture, festivals, architecture and large, homogeneous population. We really liked the city, but the crowds and pace of life were not my wife and mine cups of tea. Madrid gets hot in Summer. Susie and I used to tent camp on the Mediterranean. We found Valencia to be more to our liking, so much so we sold our home in Maryland to move to Valencia permanently 4 years ago. For us Valencia is perfect. I have trouble walking - Valencia is flat. The cost-of-living is very palatable. The population is much more diverse and accepting. Because of our Mediterranean climate, outdoor life is the name of the game. There is al fresco dinning everywhere. Oh, and do I need to mention the Mediterranean Sea itself!? We have a world class zoo and aquarium, an international airport, and many festivals, especially Las Fallas. We find it hard to believe we are actually privileged to live here.
Thank you so much for this most informing video which I loved. My wife and I have been to most big Spanish cities but Seville, Valencia are both our faviurites with Malaga 3rd. Madrid we found a georgous city but possibly too big! Nonetheless beautiful. Oh that we in the UK had similar lovely cities but that's ok we need the weather. If we were to live anywhere on the planet it would be Spain. Their people are wonderfully friendly.
... absolutely do a video about working online, how and what, just so those of us who want to try it just even back here in the States can see about becoming successful in it AND THEN and will see about living abroad.
Like your videos. One suggestion. It’s confusing when the images of the same street repeat for both cities. Would be good to know what footage we are viewing, maybe a little text over the images.
I have been living in Madrid for the last 12 years in Barrio de Salamanca and am contemplating moving to Valencia for retirement. The main thing that I feel has changed in Madrid is the weather, winters in Madrid used to be much milder and sunnier with occasional spells of rain in Jan, but now in winter temperature drops to -5 deg C within the Almendras (Not considering Cercedilla or Navacerrada where it gets blanketed in snow) and summers are extremely hot reaching somedays highs of 45 deg C. Pollution is much higher in Madrid (Madrid Capital) whereas in Valencia the air is so much cleaner. In recent years cost and quality of services have gone up much in Madrid, just came back from Valencia where a really nice coffee in Mercat Central cost 1.8 Euros whereas in Madrid a decent coffee takes you around 2.6 Euros. The biggest factor is the sea in Valencia, which moderates the temperature. Madrid presents great work opportunities and competitive salaries if you want a career but Valencia offers a better quality of life. My favorite neighborhood is El Cabanyal, super artistic and rustic and next to the beach 😃
thanks for the comment. it's funny that I've been living in Valencia for 4 years now, and now thinking of moving to Madrid (to your Barrio) I have 3 kids 8,6,2. I love Valencia the only thing that I don't like is the short-minded locals and a pueblo mintality. I found friends that we are super happyt with but they are from Argentina. We hoped to connect with locals but they are not exactly at the same mindset as we are. We lived in London, New York, LA, Moscow and my home town Montreal. So after all the huge cities Valencianos seem a bit closed minded. Very nice and friendly people but for us we found it hard to find friends like us. And the second reason is the kids, I have this beilive that in Madrid they will have a better life. So I don't know what is best. Valencia is a perfect city in so many ways. What are your thoughts about this?
Hmmm was just checking life expectancy and people live longest in areas near Madrid. Perhaps that is changing with the air quality? Also -5 😬. On the other hand, I noticed that many ground level windows have bars in Valencia and other areas near the sea in Spain. Doesn’t seem very safe.
Hello. Good video. The next time you come to Madrid you have to visit the Casa de Campo lake area. The area of Puente de Segovia, Puente de Toledo and Puente de la Arganzuela (very cool) is also recommended. Then you also have the Lineal del Manzanares park, Juan Carlos I park, Campo del Moro gardens (behind the Royal Palace), El Capricho park. This is how you get to know Madrid something beyond the downtown area. I think you will be surprised .. 🙂
I just started watching your videos and love the comparison you did between Valencia and Lisbon. My husband and I are trying to decide between moving to Valencia, Malaga, or Lisbon. Malaga is listed as one of the top expat choices according to Bloomberg. Valencia isn’t on the list this year at all. I don’t know why. I have also heard from people that Lisbon people are friendlier. There are many reasons I would love to live near Lisbon - probably not in city center. But I love that the water is warmer in Valencia since I’m a big beach/ water person. I love to swim and paddle board and I prefer to be on the Mediterranean Sea. I also like the flatness and the space. Biking and walking seem so easy to do in Valencia. And it seems like there are plenty of cultural things to do. Thanks for sharing such helpful information and I can’t wait to view your other videos.
I just recently visited Valencia and indeed biking and walking in Valencia are quite easy and people are very tolerant to cyclists which is great, the climate is amazing, and I also imagine it would be great for water sports. I did find Valencia a bit dirty and chaotic though, and life in the neighborhoods seemed a bit boring. Overall, Valencia was a mixed bag for me, I had big expectations and it did not quite live up to them. Just my 2 cents.
bicycle lane network in valencia is unbeatable. most of those lanes are isolated/segregated from the cars traffic so they are safe. the network is really wide and being a city with no up/downhills and with an excellent weather, getting anywhere by bike is a pleasure i enjoy everyday. in madrid, lanes are unexisting or extremely dangerous.
Another great video Antoanetta!! I had the chance to visit Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian and Cadiz but I certainly would love to spend some time in Madrid, such a worldly sophisticated city! Greetings from the US
Thank you for your comment. :) How would you rank those cities you visited in terms of where you would live and why? What type of cities do you tend to like in terms of living situation? Thank you.
@@justinf7322 I loved all those cities, Barcelona and San Sebastian I would say are my favorites and although I have lived in the US for forty years I was born in Argentina so obviously I'm fluent in Spanish. I don't think it would be hard for me to adapt to life in Spain But as you know, visiting a place is not the same as living in that place.
I’m sure you’re aware, but Metro Line 10 from the center to Natzaret will open this year with stops in Russafa and Arts & Sciences. I’ve been very impressed with transportation improvements in Valencia. Madrid is great, too, with thousands of tiny places in one big place but I wish the local government would do more to curtail automobile traffic.
Love all your videos, very insightful and always something new to learn from them! Thank you for the valuable content you bring here and for giving us the opportunity to find out so much about Spain! I would definitely be interested in the video you mentioned about working online and making a living while working remotely! Thank you
Based on my experience, this is a balanced, accurate assessment. I've visited Madrid and recently "lived" in Valencia for one month. You're right that if someone is in need of work opportunities, support services, etc., Madrid is the better choice. If these resources are not needed, and the focus is on the Spanish lifestyle itself, Valencia might be better. But if you're from the US, Valencia will take some work in that you're likely to find many neighborhoods and businesses where little to no English is spoken. Some of us prefer that. La vida en España es la mejor!
A bit incomparable really. Madrid is amazing for such a big , dynamic city. They really know how to live. Valencia is smaller and more laid back with great weather and beaches. Eco o.icslly Madrid is by far Spain's city with the most opportunities. I'd love in Madrid and visit beautiful Valencia personally.
Great tips! Valencia has a beach & Madrid has no beach:( during the Summer time it's extremely hot in Madrid without a beach. It must be so hot there in the city. Thank you♡
Love you, i have lived in different cities around the world, no one is perfect but if i have to choose, Valencia has its own special charm, i choose Valencia to live, it has a very good life quality.thank you Antoanetta for your videos
Your videos totally sell Valencia to me 🥰 I’m visiting now since we can’t move yet! Until we Can more we will pretend to live here some weeks through the year! I think Madrid being an active city this is very attractive to me. But I’m in love with Valencia… 😅 anyways it’s close by if there is any big event :)
I would strongly recommend to pay the north a visit, it might give you a new perspective. Both Madrid and Valencia are great, but there are many gems in the North like Bilbao or San Sebastian (especially if you are a foodie!)
Just came back from a 4 week trip to Spain. We visited Valencia because of your videos. We loved the city, weather, culture,. It depends on what you want and like, Madrid is my favorite city just because of the energy of culture and people but Valencia also has a lot to offer for the ones that like to be near the ocean and enjoy nice weather year round. I time and money was not a problem, I would split my time between the 2 cities.
I completely agree with the comments in this video that this is a very fair and well-made video! You especially nailed the public transportation critique about Valencia; even though the metro is new, clean, and efficient, the actual metro stations are soooo incredibly spaced out from each other. For example, Alameda is the official stop for the City of Arts and Sciences, yet, its a 20+ minute walk away from the complex! I find that in general, I always do a lot of walking in Valencia, which is fine because its so gorgeous, but definitely not as metro-accessible as most other major cities. Thanks for your videos Antoanetta- they really helped me get familiar with Valencia before even moving here, and now its cool to know where each of the locations are that you're filming from :)
I'd like to move to spain , lived in madrid for 8months loved it , now Madrid , Barcelona , Valencia , Bilbao , Cadiz etc . . . . . Anywhere in Spain All better than London :) Nice Video
Very nice video again!!!! Thank you!!!!! We planing to move to Spain with my husband and son. And Yes!!!! Please make a video how you do online business!!! It’s will be very nice!!! Have a great day. Hugs from America NC.
I lived in Valencia for three months back in the '90s and loved it (I went back in 2015 for a week). I've been to Madrid four times so far and every time I like it even more. Madrid is my favorite European capital. I find that it is easier to meet people and make friends in Madrid. The Valencianos are in my opinion more reserved. I could live equally well in both cities. I wouldn't live in Barcelona as I find the smog and the humidity in summer extremely oppressive. Also one good thing about Valencia: besides having a beach of its own, it is close to other lovely places such as Alicante. And if you want to go to Madrid to spend a few days, it is 1h40 by train. What is not to like?
@@Juan-xg4kr There is certainly less smog in Valencia. It is one thing to sweat like a hog and quite another to feel gross and grimy. You don't need to go far to feel the difference (e.g., Sitge).
as usual great video ..i love such kind of videos when someone have experience in travel and trying to show us some difefrances between places .. hope you visit brussels where im living right now .
They have money now to finish the Trams running from Arts and Science thru Russafa to the main train station near Xativa metro stop. Additionally running from Arts and Science connecting with present Tram to the beach. Tram Lines 10 and 11 I think
Thank you so much for posting lots of videos about Spain, I am planning moving to Barcelona, May you please make a video about Barcelona? I am coming to do my master degree and find a job is Barcelona a great place for jobs opportunities? Thx
Another wonderfully inspiring video! Thank you Antoanetta :) If Madrid was closer to the coast I would consider it, but I've always lived no further thatn 30-80 km from a the ocean and feel very anxious when I'm further away. The good things is that one can always take the train for mini trips to Madrid. The rent prices you were showing between 1000-3000 EU- were those for Madrid or Valencia, because when I look on Idealista for 2 bedroom places in valencia, it seems you can get something decent in the Ruzaffa area for about 800 Eu and in less popular areas slightly further away but still with a direct metro line connection to the center, for about 600-700 Eu..? In any case everything seems extremely cheap to me as someone who's been living in and near San Francisco for over 20 years where a studio in a safe area costs at least 2000$/month. I hope I can find some supplemental work in Valencia without needing to know Valenciano(my castillan Spanish knowledge is intgermediate at this point, but I've heard and read some Valenciano and oh boy that's like a differnt language almost). I would not need more than about 15-20 hours of work there to supplement my income and hope to teach private lessons in English or French and/or provide peer mental health support services to immigrants and refugees there...
@@asunsol Hi Asun . Thank you for your reply :) I've watched videos of locals talking about their mental health treamtent experience in Valencia and most of them are speaking in Valenciano. Do you think I would I be able to provide support to clients who genarelly speak castillnano/do they usually also know castillano? What a relief the prices I mentioned seem right ;)
@@ambivalenteful un Valencia city castellano is more spoken than valenciano unlike the small towns.. and even in those you won’t be expected to speak valenciano as a foreigner.. everybody speaks castellano as well.. don’t worry 😉 you will be ok
Hi dear, thank you for watching. Of course there are cheaper apartments. But all got a little more expensive recently I guess everywhere in the States as well. As far as teaching jobs I know people are teaching in Madrid. In Valencia I have a friend and she said it’s quite challenging but everyone has different luck and experience. I hope you will be good and come to Spain soon 😍
Hi thanks for the informations, can you please explain more about the online business? I'm also planning same and had dilemma to go madrid or valencia as I love quite place but thanks you made it clear, I'd appreciate if you could explain how's process for starting online business in Spain/Valencia, thank you!
Alicante is a nice little city. Compact and with some good places to eat and pretty beach and Santa Barbara castle on the hill right next to the city center. However, the streets can be quite dirty and there is problem of homelessness. San Juan playa has nice beach and is clean and calm, but rather dull and boring.
Hi! I also want to live in Valencia but I am still trying to find a way to make money online. I tried to sell products on Etsy but it didn't work. Now I am trying to sell coloring books on Amazon. So, yes, please tell us any ideas about how to make money online:) Unfortunately, everyone says that it is very hard to find a job in Valencia and I don't want to take that risk.
Hi, Etsy is great but it changed a lot. If you have a skill you can utilize that with a few freelance jobs. Have you tried upwork or Fiverr? I might make a video in the near future about different options to make money online and invest.
@@ANTOANETTA Unfortunately in the last 3 and a half years I was too busy to work hard in order to get the Canadian permanent residence and I didn't have time to improve my skills. Anyway, now I am back in Europe. I didn't try them yet but I will do it. This is what you do?
You're lovely. I left Chicago 30 years ago for Tampa and then Ocala, Florida. I married again and moved near London. It's so expensive here with few options, and I miss the sun. Do you speak Spanish. I speak a fair amount and always have, but I am not fluent ¡Yo tratando!
For me Madrid is the perfect city and I would love to move there. But the only problem is that it isn't at the sea and I love the sea. So I'll love to barcelona, valencia or malaga. Still deciding
Another great video, kudos. For me, Madrid gets too cold. However, I wouldn't want to live in a resort city where the weather may be nice but your neighbors are only there part of the year and the rest of the time the place is dead. I lived in Madrid for a couple of years but I was a little kid so it doesn't really count. I've never been to Valencia but I want to retire in Spain soon and Valencia sounds like the momma bear solution - not too big, not too small, just right. I'm also intrigued by Malaga. As long as I have an airport nearby, it's all good.
There is a guy who did a youtube video about living in Malaga and he loved it but eventually left and is living in Istanbul. He was from Ireland I think? Anyway, he loved everything about Malaga but after time felt there was just not that much to do and he was getting bored. He should have tried Valencia from what it sounds like but if a smaller city like Malaga does not scare you from potential boredom it is fantastic and he and others love(d) living there.
One thing Madrid has is that is right in the middle of Spain and has the best fast train connections to all the places, so if you want to travel around in the diversity of Spain it is much easier.
This is not about which is better, but I do firmly believe that any Spanish city with its pros and cons are totally livable, no national or foreign person can choose North South East West depending on whether they get a job that allows them Live comfortably. It has the same comforts anywhere. Greetings and if there are problems with the translation. It has been google
It’s simple really. From my perspective: For working all year round. Serious salary In a serious financial permanent lifestyle, Madrid. For living la vida loca and working to live or should that be living to work..? Economically more viable, Valencia. Easy to move around, Valencia. More hours of sunshine and escapism: Valencia. It is not typical to have a big park in a city center???? London has 7. Paris has two. Lisbon has one… Should i go on..?
Animo!!! Me encantan tus vídeos.
I quite like your videos on the whole but why would you want to set one city against another? Each has its own charm. Why all this competing? It tends to focus more on shortcomings. Pity

... absolutely do a video about working online, how and what, just so those of us who want to try it just even back here in the States can see about becoming successful in it AND THEN and will see about living abroad.
Will do for sure! It will be about some investing and working remotely.
I would love a video about remote working 😊
Without a doubt Madrid in all aspects, greetings from Andalusia
👍🏼 MADRID is awesome
@@ANTOANETTA Madrid is incredible yes (but the most beautiful in the world is all of Andalusia)
Hello. 🙂
YES! Please share your tips on how to get online work! Great video as always!
Will do a separate video!
@@ANTOANETTA GRACIAS REINA! You're the best!
Another great video! I hope you can make a video comparing Valencia and Sevilla.
Thank you for the interesting video. I was wondering what is the difference between Valencia and Madrid? And this video helped me find the answer.
I went this puente to Madrid and guess where I stayed. At the Barceló Torre de Madrid, I followed ur advice, thanks! I loved it :)
Really? That’s great. So happy you liked it!
bicycle lane network in valencia is unbeatable. most of those lanes are isolated/segregated from the cars traffic so they are safe. the network is really wide and being a city with no up/downhills and with an excellent weather, getting anywhere by bike is a pleasure i enjoy everyday. in madrid, lanes are unexisting or extremely dangerous.
Another great video Antoanetta!! I had the chance to visit Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian and Cadiz but I certainly would love to spend some time in Madrid, such a worldly sophisticated city! Greetings from the US
For sure! Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸 I will visit San Sebastián soon 🙏🏻
@@ANTOANETTA Make sure that you have Tapas at La Cuchara de San Telmo. Excellent food and super friendly staff.
Yes that’s great 👍🏼 about time.
I’ve only been to Madrid and Sevilla...I need to explore further.
Yes many interesting and historic cities..
Thank you so much 😊
Your channel is great!
Thank you 😊 I appreciate you watching
A bit incomparable really.
Madrid is amazing for such a big , dynamic city. They really know how to live.
Valencia is smaller and more laid back with great weather and beaches.
Eco o.icslly Madrid is by far Spain's city with the most opportunities.
I'd love in Madrid and visit beautiful Valencia personally.
Both cities are great, but Madrid has a special energy I have never feel in others european cities.
Both great cities.
For sure both a great in different things 👍🏼
Great tips! Valencia has a beach & Madrid has no beach:( during the Summer time it's extremely hot in Madrid without a beach. It must be so hot there in the city. Thank you♡
Amazing video. Soo sooo helpful. Thank you so much! Big heart!
Oh good! I am trying to show it as it is. Hopefully you will like the city!
I would strongly recommend to pay the north a visit, it might give you a new perspective. Both Madrid and Valencia are great, but there are many gems in the North like Bilbao or San Sebastian (especially if you are a foodie!)
That’s my next destination 👍🏼 can’t wait to go North.
@@ANTOANETTA I would love a video comparing Valencia, Madrid, and San Sebastian to live in, Antoanetta. Thank you for your videos! :)
Asturias and Galicia too.
I visited Madrid 3 times... Valencia 4 times... Madrid wins for sightseeing and nightlife..
Valencia wins for mild winter climate 😍😍
Yes today was 23C mid January ☀️☀️☀️ just saying
@@ANTOANETTA see? 😁😁😁🌹🌹
We do have so little time on this earth so yeah, I agree. Let's enjoy.
I would love a video about working for yourself! I'm a flight attendant right now but I don't have enough freedom
You’re doing a wonderful job with your content. Thank you kindly 😊👍
And between Valencia and Bogota, what would be your choice?
I'd like to move to spain , lived in madrid for 8months loved it , now
Madrid , Barcelona , Valencia , Bilbao , Cadiz etc . . . . . Anywhere in Spain All better than London :) Nice Video
Yes, please do a video for nomad jobs. I want to live in Spain but need to find a source of living.
good video very helpful!
One thing that I'd really miss in Madrid is the sea.
Hi there....I lived in BCN, Madrid myself. Try Málaga....t hi is is for me the place to be right now. Greetings
Hey yes Malaga is becoming more and more popular. I will do a deep dive there as well 😊
Muy interesante.Gracias por el video.
The good thing is that you can get an AVE and be in the other city in just one and a half hour!!
For sure!!! 👍🏼

I don't think there is much difference in humidity between Valencia and Barcelona
@@Juan-xg4kr There is certainly less smog in Valencia. It is one thing to sweat like a hog and quite another to feel gross and grimy. You don't need to go far to feel the difference (e.g., Sitge).
Great video!!! Love it!
as usual great video ..i love such kind of videos when someone have experience in travel and trying to show us some difefrances between places .. hope you visit brussels where im living right now .
Thx
Thanks for watching 😊 yes, I will do a video about Barcelona. We lived there when we first arrived. I think for jobs might be better than Valencia.
@@ANTOANETTA Thx

It is so good if you can visit
Yes please, do a video about working online and how tax works for those freelancers. Thank you.
Will do
Can you tell me some good neighbourhood for food ? I will be staying in center with wife and kid . A 15-20 min walk max
Another wonderfully inspiring video! Thank you Antoanetta :)
If Madrid was closer to the coast I would consider it, but I've always lived no further thatn 30-80 km from a the ocean and feel very anxious when I'm further away.
You wouldn’t need to learn valenciano to live or work in Valencia, specially as a foreigner. The prices you said seem right 👌
@@asunsol Hi Asun .

I hope you will be good and come to Spain soon 😍
... having grown up and living near the Los Angeles region of Calif I'll take "peace" over crowds any time..
Yes! Together with many other things.
Hi thanks for the informations, can you please explain more about the online business? I'm also planning same and had dilemma to go madrid or valencia as I love quite place but thanks you made it clear, I'd appreciate if you could explain how's process for starting online business in Spain/Valencia, thank you!
love your videos...ill visit Valejcia next month. my idea is to buy a property.
best wishes for you !

Hi dear i am planing to move to valencia for learning spanish language and i have a chalenge to find a remote job and good rent price
Thanks! Yes I agree. There are a lot of livable nice cities in Spain!
Lisbon has one…
Should i go on..?
Great channel. I'm moving to Spain next week. I wouldn't mind if you would make a video about a work life free from 9-5 office slavery. :)
Madrid is wonderful specially if you are rich.
Valencia is very good if you have an average wealth.
Animo!!! Me encantan tus vídeos.
Noise level and mosquitoes in Valencia but still enjoyed it - more so than US. It's flat and ideal for bike riding too. 👍🚲
Valencia isn't small. Over 1.5 million people live in its metropolitan area
I quite like your videos on the whole but why would you want to set one city against another? Each has its own charm. Why all this competing? It tends to focus more on shortcomings. Pity
so people can better pick where to visit or live
"The refrescos" music group already said it in their 1989 song "here there is no beach" 🤣😂 it's a joke sorry.
