I bought the album Dreams at Grant’s 5 n dime for $2. I liked the cover because it was a takeoff on a Magritte painting. Never heard of the Brecker Brothers. The record blew me away and it’s still one of my favorite albums. I love Horace Silver so it’s a real treat to hear them together. Thank you for this.
I bought Pursuit of the 27th man because these guys blew me away when I heard their short-lived band, Dreams. There was no doubt they were going places.
1957, I was 10 and starting to practise the sax. Everyday, My dad listened to "the voice of America jazz hour"..And one unforgettable evening: the Horace Silver quintet playing "Senor Blues".. Horace Silver became my king of the Olympus...
Great band ! “In Pursuit of the 27th Man” era . Michael even at this young age already has developed and established his sound and amazing facility. Randy was one of the original trumpet played in BS & T !
I came for the Silver and enjoined the Breckers. I did not know they played together, but makes sense. Some, hot fresh faces for Horace to introduce with his classics
At 15 yrs + 10 months old I was there at Boston's Jazz Workshop for Horace. Will Lee was on electric bass that week. The Brecker Brothers were playing right over my front row seat. I remember offering both the first sip of my scotch on the rocks! Both said "no thanks." That 27th Man LP hit me with this new Horace we were hearing. We had all the Blue Note LPs. Rather original back then.
Man, you don't hear tenor sounds like that anymore. Brecker, Berg, Grossman, Bergonzi, Liebman, ,Lloyd...they all had this crazy voiced, raw, post-trane influenced sound in the early and mid 70s.
I saw this quintet play(july '73)newport in new york, amazing day of music.marian mcpartland trio, stan getz quartet (richie beirach, dave holland, jack dejohnette)! Mose allison trio(paul motian),modern jazz quartet & this horace quintet.i think it was $5!. Thank you for posting this great, great music.
..wow, that was best $5 you could have spent that day!..I think I met you once years ago, I’m from Forest Hills, through Billy Urquhart, he and I played in a band with Nina’s younger brother Chieli..hope you are well..New York September 14, 2020..
Michael is killing it and so young. Love his sound on this. I think Randy is the interesting one here though cuz he is playing so inside for him. He can get out and stay out so far and long that it's hard to hear how it fits at times. It is cool to hear a young Randy playing very inside and very good. The musical journey is beautiful....
Such great solowork by Michael here - such power! Also Randy is doing his thing. Horace is backning up the soloists very good as always. Guess this maybe was among the best groups Horace ever had. Thanks a lot for this nice clip!
My first Brecker Bros encounter was live in a small town in Quebec City as a touring musician at the time, Skunk Funk was the fusion groove every horn wanted to execute but seeing it live was better than the recording. Mike was a bad boy no doubt about it especially when your the first call in the NYC studio sessions. KUDOS and RIP. Randy deserves his props as well.
I love music and love even more when people contribute to keeping it going with never seen videos and the Brecker Brother is one of my Heroes . Thank you Mike and Randy 4 filling my life with so much joy .gmx known tour manager.
This is so awesome I so glad I found your Channel. I have many friends that are musicians I sent it to most of them. Look forward to your other videos I especially liked videos. That way I can use all my senses except for taste
What is the name of the first tune, I love the way Horace plays a funky Bebop swing over the Latin thing, that's my cuz for you he's got that Cape Verdean fire and brimstone running in his blood. Love you Horace, rip.
As I remember, Pori Jazz 1973 Horace Silver Quintet members are Horace Silver - piano Randy Brecker - trumpet Michael Brecker - tenor saxophone Bob Cranshaw - electric bass Mickey Roker - drums bigozine2.com/roio/?p=1864 soundcloud.com/jazz-video-guy/horacesilverquintet-1973-04-14-internationales-finnisches-jazzfest-finland
In pursuit of the 27th man is way different than it is on the album. It's faster, unrestrained, raw and everyone except Lee takes a long solo. The walking bass during the solos is great.
yes kill and maim and murder those who can't dig your fav shit. sophisticated , 6th grader in reform school imagery. well done, creton. yes i do like black humor and sarcasm, but that shit is just stupid sounding Buford.
un-fking-believable.... I'm going to just throw this guess out there... maybe only 1% of sax and trumpet players can get down like this. 1%?? ya think?
Yeah? I'm not claiming to know definitively, but Randy is selling a Horace album from '73 on his site feat. Brecker Brothers. randybrecker.com/recordings/horace-silver-quintet-the-1973-concerts-live-in-finland-boston-nyc-2-cd/
Michael was 24 here. This guy was skilled way beyond his year’s. Too Bad He Took his Genius with Him at 58.
Saw this band with Horace, Mike, Randy and Will Lee was on bass. It was fire all night !!!

That album find was around 1972, BTW.
Years later, Horace Silver recorded a album with Brecker brothers called "A prescription for the blues". A masterpiece !
Michael had the Coltrane legacy within him combined with the amazing energy of his generations music
Not just Trane. Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and Stanley Turrentine all heavily influenced Michael imo!
I bought Pursuit of the 27th man because these guys blew me away when I heard their short-lived band, Dreams. There was no doubt they were going places.
Michael was about 24 at this stage, unbelievable!
1957, I was 10 and starting to practise the sax. Everyday, My dad listened to "the voice of America jazz hour"..And one unforgettable evening: the Horace Silver quintet playing "Senor Blues".. Horace Silver became my king of the Olympus...
I can't get over Will Lee's playing on this, so funky and harmonically on it, perfect for Horace's band.
Die grosse Zeit des Jazz. Wonderful!
Didn’t know Will Lee played with Horace! Knew he was associated with the Breckers but didn’t know he played with Horace!
Great band ! “In Pursuit of the 27th Man” era . Michael even at this young age already has developed and established his sound and amazing facility. Randy was one of the original trumpet played in BS & T !
Already a king in 73... R.I.P. Michael!
I came for the Silver and enjoined the Breckers. I did not know they played together, but makes sense. Some, hot fresh faces for Horace to introduce with his classics

you don't hear it? it's all over!
Michael Brecker, the best. He was our era's Coltrane. None better.
Agreed. I had the fortune to see this band in '73,... brings back the memory; this is rare...thanks!
At least 4 of those you listed were students of Joe Allard....

Anyone else thing Randy looks like Mac from It's always sunny?

A very busy funky Queen on these recordings
Al Queen is cooking!
Such great solowork by Michael here - such power! Also Randy is doing his thing.
Horace is backning up the soloists very good as always. Guess this maybe was among the best groups Horace ever had.
Thanks a lot for this nice clip!
The rhythm section is so tight. It’s clear that they were listening to each other and playing off their techniques.

The energy at this show must have been amazing!
This is some great, classic stuff, thanks for sharing!
Great set!!!!

Randy Brecker kinda sounds like Woody Shaw, especially in his solo starting at 51:55
I hear the lick everywhere
You can't unhear the lick
1:05:03
Love Horace
Unmistakable Michael Brecker.
Almost hard to believe this clip is nearing the half century mark.
And yet it sounds like it comes from a half century from now.
Fascinating. Michael hadn't yet, as he eventually would, surpassed Randy in harmonic conception.
I’d say that here he already had.
wow, wtf r u getting all these? to quote billy ocean: 'simply awesome.'
Thanks so much for posting - wonderful. So nice to hear Michael at this stage. Such a great sound!
michael brecker sounds like coltrane in this record
Sounds like Bob berg when he was with Horace silver.
This IS greatness in motion! Captured in time on tape for us to hear.
Love it.
Thanks bernie
This is great
this is my favourite Michael brecker to hear! thanks Berns!
The title should have been the other way around, Horace Silver with Michael & Randy Brecker. This is Silver's music.
Hello, love early Michael Brecker, any idea of where to purchase this recording?
incredibile bellissimo stupendo grazie
Horace Silver (8:00) fantástico, brilhante...gênio

Bernie, you keep nailin' it. Thanks for this one! Much appreciated!
I didn't know Michael Brecker played flute. I knew he personally played drums, but not flute.)

Liberated Brother!
As I remember, Pori Jazz 1973 Horace Silver Quintet members are

Randy Brecker - trumpet
Michael Brecker - tenor saxophone

Very similar sounds, but this is Brecker.
Horace introduced Michael in the line up
