One of the big things I've learned from Dave is patience and perseverance. The number of times he needs to tune/de-tune, neck on/off, strings on/off, adjust this then that then this again, then wait some time to let the everything settle, and then do it all again, is hugely enlightening. I always assumed I was just flailing, but in fact, there is a lot of gyration needed to get it right. Most other repair videos just show one pass of 'do this... done, next'. They don't show that it may have taken 3-5 times of round-and-round tweaking to get the right settings. I now also understand much more about the order that things need to be done because of the interactions. Thanks for showing us the way, Dave!
@Nunnayer Beeswax you're wrong and you should feel bad for being wrong.
Nunnayer Beeswax lol get a life
@@BigNameJamesStuff Some people need love, nunnayer beeswax is a fine example of that.
"right now the neck straightness is close but, ass." - my favorite line in this video ahahahahaha.
"Jackson Pollock wired my bass"
Dave is going artistic on that wiring cavity.
"This type of stuff makes my sack contract" LMAO
The kill switch is so you can keep the bass plugged in and not kill the battery. I think.
Those pickup switches control 1 overall boost
2 bass boost only
3 treble boost only
Got the same set of pickups installed on an old bass. They sound really good. I've liked 'em since they were installed in 1988.
Windows 95… LOL! One way ticket to Gooch City, please.
Thanks for all of the great videos, Dave!
Custom cordoozle concocted sack contractor.
Just notating for the book.
I remember that back in the nineties those Seymour Duncan active pickups with the three dip switches were the greatest thing since beer was invented. After a couple of years, everyone started having issues from not caring properly for them and having the nine volts leak acid into the control cavity and the like..
Dip switch settings from the Duncan website:
We stopped making the switch pickups ("Active EQ") in the mid-'90s. We replaced them with the Pro-Active? series.
The little rocker switches on the Active EQ pickups change the sound. Switch #1 shifts the coil resonance. On a Jazz Bass? neck pickup and a P Bass? pickup, the resonance moves downward from 22 KHz to 6.4 KHz. On a Jazz Bass bridge pickup, it move downwards from 17 KHz to 4.9 KHz. The effect is to give a more focused sound with a harder attack. Switch #2 gives a broad band bass boost of 4 dB for the Jazz Bass neck and P Bass pickups, and 5 dB for the Jazz Bass bridge. The switches can be a very effective tool for changing the tonal "character" of your instrument.

So is a hammer.

I got fired from a job so I decided to buy a Les Paul at a pawn shop on my way home. When I got there the Les Paul was gone. They had a real nice MIM Jazz Bass and it had extra knobs so I thought it was a special edition. I got it for $300. When I got it home I found out it has a John East J-Retro preamp which costs over $300 alone. I had a bass player friend play it and he thinks the pickups are upgraded as well.
Another success, Dave. I love it when a difficult patient comes in!
Cheers Dave for all your vids on bass setups. I bought a 2nd hand bass that was set up terribly and managed to get it playing amazing by following your advice. Just sold said bass and and the new owner remarked on how well set up it was.
I'm just gonna say one thing . Keep making great videos dave !
I think the thing you said was a spacer is to hold one of the pickguard screws in that you said were just floating there.
Hope this helps

And the third switch is for turning off the switches. And I've only had two beers.
@@w13rdguy - couple of growlers . ha !
Yeah, because musicians just looooooove overly complicated switch and control configurations on their instruments!
/sarcasm 😋🤣
I'm not sure if I'm understanding these technical terms.
"Right now, the neck straightness is close, but it's ass." 😄
I admire your level of patience.
Not (just) a custom. A Suuuper custom!
Wow, an LED to let you know it's working. Or a night light so you can see where the switches are on a dark stage. George Jetson would be impressed!
That reminds me of what Dr Sigmund Freud having said "A cigar is just a cigar". In this instance, an LED is just an LED.
I have that same shirt. My sister-in-law bought it for me in Australia when she went a year ago ...
To boldly go where fools fear to venture, haha! You're a brave one, Dave.
I fricking WANT this bass
You have to buckle up , set the year on the pickup switches. Then get it to 88bpm , the light will glow , hit the toggle , crank the pot... THEN the flux capacitor will engage.. You can go back before you bought the RIC and save yourself much grief.... And buy those rotos with that fender you should have bought .. .
The pickups are active & the dip switches alter the resonant frequency or Q of the pickups. Probably by taking out or adding windings somehow. Very complicated to make, Seymour Duncan (Basslines) later went with a simpler version without the dip switches. Easier to make and probably more reliable.
The cool tip is the whip tip on the 3-in-1 oil. Windows 95 dip switches -- leaving me in stitches! Def a scoreboard, you can use the neck pickup for how many chicks look at the bass player and the bridge pickup for the guitar player. Wait, you might need more switches on the bridge pickup.
High tech pickups/EQ and big dumb bridge. Tuners by Crap r Us.
Gooch City Customization has been busy.
Cheer!!
Dave, I may be late to the party and someone may have already answered the little spacer question but that is a screw retainer used in light switch covers. It's designed so you dont lose your screw. Funny what you find in guitars. Peace!
Jazz bass??? I clearly see a P body and a P pickguard.... The neck, however, looks like a thin Jazz neck. 😉 Great channel, by the way. 👍
its like de jazz bass special made in japan. body of precision but jazz neck. like duff mckagan bass
Yup, you're right. I wouldn't be surprised if the body turned out to be non-Fender.
Hey Jay! I think you're right. P-bass special is what fender would call this.
Another very different instrument!!! You do get some funny stuff! Your amazing Dave!
Well, sometimes you have to walk away and not come back
I'm not sure, but that little switch may be useful in interfacing with Apple products, think it's called an iGooch switch.
Gad zooks !! O&P is one of my fav sam'iches !! BRB , got'ta hit the deli !!
Hiya Dave, i had a set of those Seymour Duncan pups on a bass i bought years ago APJs they were called, apparently were fantastic them little switches changed mids or something, but they died replaced it with EMGS never looked back. That whole bass is a basket of work. But you worked your magic.
bass sounds amazing despite the oddities.
Might sound good because of the oddities.
Diggin' the HOG sticker on your Weller......
That wuz a fun video.
I like your shirt Dave.
Ancient windows 95 deep switch SD pickups. haha
According to SD's website, the mid-90's is when they stopped making them.
There was more truth to that Windows95 analogy. Back then, many computer motherboards had DIP switches that had to be configured a certain way in order to work with whatever peripherals (add-ons) were in the machines.
Dave it is much easier to bend the neck before adjusting the truss rod easier on you easier on the truss rod, strap the heel down to the bench thick towel under the neck or even two padded blocks on either end of the neck and just push in the center what ever way it needs to go and as you tighten the truss rod push down gently on the neck this will take the pressure off the truss rod and make it much easier to turn if that makes sense. LOL
There's a reason the BA II series were stamped with an installation note about having a Luthier install them. 90% of the time the neck needs shimmed. Because the base plate on the BA is too thick. I never could understand the popularity of those Leo Quan bridges for bass. I have them on a couple of basses but I still like the stock Fender threaded saddle bent plate.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff but but but people think they look cool LOL
I am a recovering LeoQuan fanboy! I've gotten past that; I just don't care anymore for superfluous material for the sake of "muh sustain!"
If it cant tighten its never gonna be able to clash with the Titans. You know the score maestro. ;) Cheers Dave.
Best bass pick ups ever made when wired right
What pickups are they? They look pretty interesting
@@raweymoore Seymour Duncan Active EQ. 90s isn't that ancient.
If you flick the closest to you, you change the frequency peak from 22 kHz to 6.4 kHz on the neck and from 17kHz to 4.9kHz on the bridge. That gives more attack. The second switch is a 4 or 5dB bass boost.
This bass must be from the planet mars.
The tip of the flame is the hottest part.

Dave has a little toot at 10:56
" My sack content, you know, really contracts"!
" Okay, we're all tuned up to bitch"!
Hilarious!!!!!!!
That sandwich sounds good 🥪
Speaking of sandwiches, Dave have ever tried corned beef on rye? Now that’s a damn good sammich!
Big fan of the P/J pickup combo (Windows 10 preferred....) with the Jazz neck, but is all that excess shit necessary- I know I'd hit that kill switch 10 times a gig on accident. She sounds nice through the bench amp, not sold on all that schwaz, a word that is now in my vocabulary permanently. Dave your patience is refreshing, great video!

Those are some of the weirdest pickups I have ever seen.
Edit: Jesus that is the messiest looking soldering and shielding I have seen, could have ordered the long cables and zip-tied some
All I can say on this one Dave is ,,, LOL. You won.

Concocted custom cordoozle?
I really like active electronics/pickups on basses, but two minutes in and that thing gave me a headache.
Eight minutes in and my headache just got worse. Wow.
That is some beautifully quarter sawn wood. Who says you gotta have squiggily grain to get a beautifull figure?
Active Seymour Duncan pickups. Found this:

As far as the output jack, just looks like the locking jack I had on my Riverhead Unicorn. ✌️
That's not a custom jazz, it's a jazz neck on a p body. Was kind of popular way back when, my cousin had one. In fact his was natural wood
Windows 95 pickups, heh heh.... 🤘
Guitar Center should hire you to De-ass their basses. The setups are so bad they unplayable. They could have made a sale today but they couldn't be convinced a neck with back bow is a problem. I told them the bass couldn't be tested properly in that condition. The bass was used Fender Jazz Pro. They said the neck had to be removed and they might have it adjusted next time I come in the store. I showed them the adjustment access but they blew me off. Fender, and other manufacturers, should do spot inspections to see what piss poor condition their products are displayed in. Car dealers can't get away with this crap without ramifications.
Nice looking bass, I'd update the electronics if it were mine.
Wouldn't that be a P bass?
Pretty piece of wood. Other than that I would gut it, change the tuners and bridge and make it a passive PJ bass. Good video Dave :)
P bass body for sure, not a jazz bass
@@the116army2 Def a jazz bass style neck though too, so it's both?
Lack of patience is the luthiers biggest enemy.
Looks really nice! Pity about the stupid pickups and spaghetti bollocknaise electronics. Well done for surviving. Sandwich well earned
i bet that little bit of plastic you had no idea was a washer that held the screw that was floating in mid air like a poor mans nylock nut
Hey Dave how do i get you to setup my basses? lol
Word or the day is C__________
Call it an "RCH" in mixed company.
That thing is scarey.
Its a built in eq
This dude has no idea what that is :-)
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff Iknow Dave,just joke 😂😂😂

the 80s were not kind to this bass
It’s not a bass, it’s a Geiger counter.
that's what happens when you unfriend Tom!
Those three pickup switches on those pickups must be some kind of tone changer depending on the frequency...but that's just my wild intuition and it may not be true.
Just when I thought Ive seen everything.. Switches On The PICK- UPS? why?????
To change their characteristics.
Had some on a bass I got as a kid in walla walla.
@ThePaul Steezo Thx for info bro.. Just sayin I never seen switches on the PUs
before.. The way I slam my poor old Ricky Bass I would be running into those damn switches constantly.. but they are cool looking, gotta admit.
@@onpsxmember Yeah I get it - just strange.. My big fingers would be running into them things all night.
Another one amongst the myriad horrible ideas brought to us by the musical instrument industry back some 20-odd years ago.
Pull pin, throw.
...Cover ears.

Losing your marbles, eh?

Yikes that bass only plays spaghetti westerns.
What a mess! Take that bass and drop in some EMG Geezer Butler passive PJ pick-ups and lose the switches and buddy would have something.
That’s is not a Jazz Bass
Never seen no shit like that! LOL
What a mess..
If the news reported that Julian Assange was being fed olive loaf on a croissant, amnesty international would get involved.
Shouldn’ let this man touches your guitar. Holy crap, these are not light switches. Handle with care dude. Should always put original screws back where it belongs.
You don't know what you're talking about.
Yeah I have mixed feelings about dave's work too.
Does he get things in playing order? Yes
Does he take precautions when needed? Mostly
Is he always the most careful? No
At the end of the day what's important is if the client is happy with the work, because it's their money that's paying for the work, which he has shown here for over a decade.
At the very least it's entertaining content to watch.
souldering lol
haha yep Canadian for Saah-dering
Windows 95, love it
The Jazz Bass tone sounds perfect to my ear, and that one is great. Pity about the dog's dinner inside.
These are the Seymour Duncan Actives series pickups.....more info here www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?275476-Seymour-Duncan-Active-EQ-Pickups-Info
Nice looking body on the guitar...but take all those fancy pickups out and re-rig it as a standard jazz bass, there's nowt up with them yer know...
a updated version of a fender gooched bridge very nice, had to update a gooched mexican flounder
Total amateur wiring job - overly complicated in/out of phase pickups with an active preamp somewhere in there - totally unnecessary. Dave to the rescue puts it all right.
If the person who did that wiring is pretending to be some king of professional luthier they should be ashamed.
