It was some years ago that I heard of the existence of Stirling engines and Flame Licker engines *for the 1st time ever* in your videos! 😃👍
We learnt just something about Steam-, Diesel-, Otto- (2-stroke and 4-stroke) in school, but not the above mentioned. 🤷♂️
Nice
Hi Ronald! Love these videos, there are so many interesting and pretty model engines out there nowadays. I've seen that the hit-and-miss engines can produce a fair bit of torque, do these other model engines, like stirling and flamelickers, make any useable power or are they mainly for display purposes?
The Stirling engine can be quite useful and has been used in the early days as a wood burning Stirling engine-powered water pump for rural farms. Phillips made a few in the 50's (very few unfortunately) to charge batteries or to run their radios in rural areas (would love to get my hands on one of these). The Swiss have submarines with Stirling powered generators to keep their batteries going when submerged. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_engine
Most of these Stirling engines are demonstration models. They need to get up to speed before they can support a constant load and then, without adequate cooling, they overheat and slow down which is time to shut them down before they quit.
I purchased a Huxtable Hot Air Engine from Australia which is a high quality Stirling Cycle Engine ua-cam.com/video/GTuybMRKi6Y/v-deo.html and there are a couple more videos where I made cooling fins which keeps it running even longer.
The 6-cylinder Ringbom-Stirling Gatling engine shows promise and I have played around with a couple of ways to make it generate electric. These work and demonstrate the principle, but unfortunately it still has a limited run-time as it overheats. I still have a bit of work to do on these before I release the videos. :-)
This particular engine is a very good runner and is nice to just look at sitting on a shelf.
Thanks for watching!
