- Part 1 Native American Indian Segment of Utah - Olymics Introduction showing the five major Utah tribes; The Ute, Shoshone, Goshute, Paiute and Navajo (Dine). Each major tribal leader greets the athletes to the 2002 Olympics in their own language.
im one of the dancer...my tribe is Paiute...im that lil kid in green by my cuzin in 1:35...
1:35
That was the most beautiful of all the Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
to be honest though, I'm not gonna be Indian biased but this one is the best one in recent years. Sochi was pretty good, they had tatu perform, China was even better but this one was a pretty good winter Olympics.
I swear, this video brought a couple of tears to my eyes because I like to see my tribe recognized. Thank you so much for uploading this video. Also, by seeing this video made me feel more alive inside. Ahee`

Yéégo!
Seeing this in 2024. I hope you are well. Beautiful ceremony, beautiful tribes. Peace be with you
I am not Native American but I get teary eyed every time I watch this! It's soooo beautiful! I love it
The real beautiful thing about this segment are not only the beauty of the culture of Native Americans but also how in Utah, there are five main nations in Utah that are there united as one, just like the five continents of the world, as demonstrated in the Olympic rings
So happy to find this on UA-cam. I was afraid being so old it could be lost forever. This was one of the most phenomenal opening ceremonies ever. I am not Native American but felt so much pride for The People. This was beautiful. Many thanks for uploading this, and what excellent quality too.
This still gives me chills and tears when I watch it. It was so powerful, so moving, so beautiful words can't describe the overwhelming feeling. I was there in the stands, and my daughter is the 4th athlete to receive the blessing from the Native leaders. The man who gave her his blessing was Rupert Steele of the Goshute nation. This moment is one of the high points of my life.
We had several. Chief Winnemucca, Sarah Winnemucca, Chief Tenaya of Yosemite, Numaga, Ohcio, Polina, Wovoka, just to name a few.
Agh, 10 years later and this still makes me tear up when I watch it. I remember I was blown away to see them honoring us :)
This is the best thing I have ever seen the u.s. do for us.
I rember watching this i love this i am part Cherokee
I can barely watch this without getting choked up. It’s so spiritual.
4 out of 5 tribes speak a similar dialect. Dine or Navajo is totally different.

Unfortunately, 4 of those Nations had a pass time in hunting and enslaving Navajo.
Proud of all Native American's! Proud to be Tsa-La-Gi (Cherokee)
I have always been in awe of the sheer beauty and wonder of the First Nations people, the true first Americans and Canadians.
We don't do enough to respect their cultures today, but at Salt Lake City they were honored, and in Vancouver 2010, they will be honored as well.
Skeptical Chris as well as the first Central and South Americans.
Responding to the comment that they were sad and upset that these dances were not performed on Native Land....
For the Navajo it is our land. This land particularly has many Navajo remains resting on it from travels a long time ago. I was there as a representative for the Navajo Nation, this was our same concern. But the answer is simple, it is our land and it's ok. The Ribbon Dancers and Yeibichei Dancers would have otherwise NOT been ALLOWED to perform it at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
you guys were WONDERFUL! congrats on your performance, along with your tribe and the other tribes...truely an honor! best of luck to you!
They're all so beautiful. I'm crying 😭
this totally made me cry! :')
me 2
good to see all the tribes of Utah here (normally they aren't) Navajos and Utes don't get along much but some times they do come to their capitals to gamble. The Navajo are my tribe we control all of Southern Utah south of the San Juan River (Utes control the north side)
thanks to my friends for re-posting this. Tears.
I am so honored to have native american blood running in my veins!😤
God bless you Ahwahneechee

i actually danced in there...
i am navajo, and yeah that is much different from the other tribes, for that, i am proud!!!
Everytime I Watch This Video I Feel Empowered With Native Pride. Now I Can Achieve Anything.
Aahoo!
Where are the segments of this where the flutes are played; the Eagle flying over; then Robbie Robertson comes in? The segment I'm looking for shows the Tribes entering, without the irritating announcers.
Pround member of the Great Ute Nation, Colorado
The Paiutes are in the south and south eastern central area, like Cedar City. I am a Paiute from the western border of Nevada and eastern California and have not gone to that area...yet.
The ceremony was held 3 blocks away from my house. I was 7 or 8. Why my parents didn't take me to see the opening OR closing ceremony still upsets me.
Tough and expensive tickets to get. I tried believe me! lol
I know there were people in Utah who didn't want it there because it was a distraction to our state and too many people my cousins parents were some of them they were protesting against it
Excuse me? Actually, my friend lives in a reservation where he owns one of those casinos. U.S tax collectors found out he made a large income there and taxed him nearly 50% of his income. Also, we had our land STOLEN and where given small pieces of land to live on b/c millions of us where killed by the U.S. you're more free, b/c if something is stolen from you, the U.S gives you a fair trial. We don't. So, sir/ma'am, you need to shut YOUR mouth.
Wonderful native peoples , too bad they don't get better respect from most Americans who took their land from them!
Awesome 👍

See my profile. I am a Paiute.
Who was that 3rd tribal leader?
Ute nation
I hope the do this again in 2028
all five indian language are differnt?
No shit. We have our own languages but some sound the same and can understand the languages.
Where's the rest of the 2002 olympic games?
I think this is beautiful but some of the commentary is just ridiculous. It sounds like they are describing plant life or farm animals. And I mean no disrespect to the First Nations who were out to rep. I'm saying that the commentators really effed up.
the way he pronounced sacagawea made my cringe
Eh....games
