I've been eyeing these up online, need a beat around bass I'm not worried about if I get little ding on it or something. Always stress when I take one my Spectors anywhere. So searched vids, seen yours pop up and figured I'd check it out since I respect your gear reviews and have to say I'm really digging the sound and the look. You might have convinced me to seriously think about getting one, if not just getting one straight away. Nice color too, very 60's surf vibe (in a classy not cheesy way). Good vid as always.
MOD PROJECT!! I love modding dude. Fitted BKP P-58s to my Eastcoast P. Sounds incredible now. Got a list of other mods to do as well. Can't wait to see more.
I have the 70's CV in black and couldn't help myself. Fender Hi-Mass, Fender Custom '62 pup, Obsidian wiring kit, bone nut (eliminated E string buzz immediately), tuners seem fine. I spread the upgrades across the time of Covid. I'm into it for about $550 and love it everyday. Recently added the 420 Fuzz v2. I'll be watching.
I have two Squier Matt Freeman sig p basses, I believe they turned into the CV 70's p-bass. One has upgraded pots with treble bleed, .047 cap, emg gzr pickups, drop-d tuner, and dunlop super bright strings. Sounds great. The other is mostly stock just upgraded pots and put on fender 9050 flats.
yeh im thinking a pot upgrade will come with the tone circuit mod, the Bass is seriously just great for the money, a little money well spent on the electrics and this the same as my Jag and Jazz V are rivals to a lot of highend bass for me!
Just ordered the limited edition Surf Green one from Musicians Friend. Planning on Fralin pickup upgrade, high mass bridge, and change out the control harness. And flatwound strings. Great platform to modify.
@@psychoof78 I like it a lot. The build quality is as good as a MIM Fender bass. I did switch out the pickups and control harness. But there wasn't anything wrong with the stock setup. Just wanted to try something different. The bass is a bargain for the price.
Guys any issues? I got this bass and my first one had sharp frets, the bridge was bent away from the body and there was another issue that slips my mind. I went to guitar center for an exchange. The first one they opened had better frets but trash in the paint that wouldn’t buff out. I got another one and brought it home. I found if I look at an angle there are two drip marks in the paint on the back. The neck pocket isn’t gapped like my first one but the paint almost looks like they assembled it before it hardened. Stuff no one would see but I’m particular and it’s weighing on me. I also notice on the second fret it looks like they pressed the fret into the neck and scratched the black binding. There was a walnut finish in stock that looked great. I was just really digging the surf green. Torn between keeping it and getting the walnut due to finish flaws though.
I recently got a Vintage Modified PJ at a pawn shop for cheap, has a good weight and ot feels better than a lot of American Fenders that I've tried. I raised the stock pick ups after watching a video and it made a big difference amd yesterday I found some old cts full size pots amd my parts box and installed them which just made it sound even better. I was thinking about changing the pick ups originally but I'm not sure i have to anymore. I also have a classic vibe jazz with Quarter Pounders and then a 2004 MIM P-Bass that sounds pretty nice even with the stock pick ups. I got a video of the new bass before the tone pots were installed on my channel.
Great bass. I have the exact same one-2019. I replaced the stock pups with Bill Lawrence-Wilde P-46 pups and strung with La Bella 760FL flats. I like your bridge upgrade on the other video. Nice job demonstrating the bass as well as the demos of the Fuzzrocious pedals!
The Lawrence pickups are great and you can't beat La Bella flats. I love the low tension ones. Some old school thump right there. I went with Porter wound pickups on mine that sound punchy.
Great review, and that colour is just awesome. Congrats! I have a Fender MIM Precision bass and swapped the pick ups for Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. I have also installed a Hipshot Kick Ass bridge and Obsidian Wire internal wiring, pots and jack. I also added Jim Dunlop strap holders that are slightly wider than stock. I may upgrade the tuners to Hipshot HB7s. And I may line the internal cavity with copper tape. Plays and sounds excellent. Would love to buy this same bass and treat it as a project. Rock On!
I have to agree. Those are some sweet alnicos they put in those bases and they totally kick ass. Unless you're just after a completely different tone, an upgrade isn't necessary
I'm getting ready to buy a Squier CV 70's P Bass as well, so I am very interested to hear the difference between your stock CV 70's pickups and the Seymour Duncan QP's, and the impact of the high-mass bridge as well. Have you considered any of the other Seymour Duncan P Bass pickups? (maybe the Hot Rod SPB-2's or the Steve Harris SPB-4's? Supposedly both are hotter than the SPB-1's without introducing that muddy QP sound; but I don't know what a stock CV 70's pickup sounds like compared to a SPB-1)
It's cool but I'm not dishing out 430 before taxes knowing that I get no set up and pickups need upgrade . Also Squire is notorious for having horrible bridges . I had to add oil the bridges ALLEN WRENCH SCREWS just to get them to turn . They literally came out of the factory rusted and wouldn't turn until i fixed it . Better off just starting with a better model but hey if it suits your needs go for it man .
Can honestly say none of the squiers ive had have had any bridge issues ( 3 so far) i just like the hi mass bridges, on the set up, id would argue any bass needs a bit of love to get it playing 100% how you want it. The pickups arent bad but the SD's are just better all round....but you cant expect a £300 bass to be out of this world for me its a solid bass. like i say in the video id love a Vintera but just cant justify the monies in one go this gets me damn close.
@@AndyBassist You got it new for 300 ? Every retailer has them for at least 430 now before taxes . However in a fairness my bass does what I want it to now and the stock pickups don't need replacing . I got my 70s squire jazz bass 3 years ago on a trade in . So my total cost was about 150 back then . Now they're 430 with a upgraded neck . I have a Glarry p bass I put a lot of work into and it really surprised me . Great bass before I upgrade in a little bit of time . It's good. Anyway I enjoyed the review . You're right in looking elsewhere for something other than some of these vintnera or nate mendel models . They're awesome but that price tag is a killer .
The Squire is fine and does not need any mods at all. You might have an issue with bad frets but I had my authorized repairman have Fender send a replacement neck.
Agreed. No real need to change anything. I just changed the nut, pots, capacitor and added a Switchcraft jack just to make it slightly more robust. But to be honest, not really necessary
The neck feels similar to my Jaguar, not super fat so im guessing a bit thinner!? for me no neck dive at all! and its very light! aswell! very very happy with it squier is killing it with its basses these days!
@@AndyBassist Thanks for quick reply. I'm looking forward into this bass. I currently own Ibanez SR300E which super comfortable but it's quite modern in terms of a sound and my other bass is Ibanez Talman with PJ pickups and active preamp it's a nice sounding and looking bass but not very comfortable as a neck is pretty thick and havy and likes to dive. Hope this Squire is what I'm looking for a classic tone in moderately comfortable package.
@@AgentJot23 no worries man thanks for checking out the video! yeh the squier def does the P Bass thing very well! its already had a pickup upgrade ( video to come) it is a super comfortable bass to play im very happy to have a rival to the Jaguar as my number one bass
Id still love to have a Vintera but in no way disappointed with the Squier this thing is a beast! have a update video coming soon showing a few more updates
Funny thing is i can play with my fingers but i prefer the sound of a pick, personally i really dislike it when a guitar player plays bass with his/her fingers just because he thinks he has to, Chris Squire, Lemmy, Paul McCartney, Roger Glover, Mike Dirnt, Matt Freeman, jason Newstead and many more are great players with a pick, but thanks for checking out the channel and commenting.
Different styles for different genres . Aggressive rock genres such as punk , pop punk , metal. Hardcore sound much superior with the attack and brightness of a pick. If you play funk or jazz with a pick , that may sound weird . But no need to gatekeep
Listen to this guy trying to tell people what to do in the internet. It’s Fuckin music, there isn’t any rules! I play half our set with a pick and half with my fingers. All depends on the song
In a song mix, it wouldn’t matter if it’s a pick or fingers. You wouldn’t notice the difference in most cases…..unless if you’re being analytical but at that point you’re not listening to the song
