  • In the complex financial landscape of nonprofit organizations, social enterprise can provide a sustainable revenue stream for nonprofits, allowing them to reinvest in their missions and expand their impact. This Take Five Nonprofit Leadership Conference session explores the role of social enterprise in nonprofit organizations, discussing its purpose, common types, opportunities, and challenges.
Social enterprise is an industry that the World Economic Forum says has 10M enterprises worldwide who generate 2 trillion in annual revenue. Social enterprises have varied organizational structures but share the key attribute that they put people and planet or the more common nonprofit term “social impact” over profit. They seek to use marketplace practices and innovation to address societal problems.
The aim of social enterprises is to create a sustaining revenue stream that aims to cover costs or to make a small profit. In nonprofits, both philanthropic and social enterprise activity and revenue streams can coexist in a nonprofit organization. Profits if they exist are reinvested in the nonprofit’s mission.
    Workshop Focus:
What role does social enterprise play in nonprofit organizations?
What is the purpose of social enterprise within a nonprofit?
What are the types of organizations and causes in which social enterprise most commonly exists?
What are the opportunities and challenges for nonprofits in launching and operating social enterprises?
