- In this video, I demonstrate a Toshiba Libretto subnotebook from 1999, and explain why I love it and why it makes for a very good DOS and early Windows gaming PC.

Thank you UA-cam recommended. A new really good, small vintage/ whatever comes up Tech channel. Wish this channel a lot of luck, mate
Proud owner of a Toshiba Libretto 70CT and a 100CT. Got 'em way before their price skyrocketed on eBay, luckily.

Nice! These are really cool systems! I'd love to get one myself one of these days!
Lovely little laptop. Been looking to get one myself!
I remember seeing these for sale listed as “RARE” in like 2014 for only $50. I so wish I snagged one.
This laptop is a technological masterpiece!
Neat setup.
great contend! Nostagia is screaming in my ear since the pandemic starts. I think that put things in perspective. Not to say that this Toshiba is one of the best sub-notebook ever!
Great channel buddy
Nice Little Toshiba Great Video
Neat a true retro version of what I did with my Netbook after EoS for windows 7
Love that you finished up the clip with some Duke Nukem! I'm a bit of a hard drive holdout but it sounds like you made pretty good use of that 32GB CompactFlash card.
I was going to subscribe, but you already have exactly 386 subscribers. I can't ruin that number.
Lol I have the 70CT... amazing, it's like the size of a handheld console with a powerhouse 486DX, it's quite unheard of. Remember back in 1997, every classmate has a pentium / 80486 midi tower, keyboard, mouse and 15 inch CRT...
Lol it is a delight to see it run Zsnes emulator in dos.
Love the video..I was watching it while mine was being shipped in excitement haha.
Question for you tho. Alot of my dos games are later release that were on cd, when I transfer them over from another windows install using pcmcia compact flash it asks me to put in the CD, which I clearly can't. By any chance would you know any walk around to this??
6:24 Just noticed that thing to the right. Nice to see one in use, love those MacBook Pros in the G4 body. Been looking for a good priced 17' for the longest time but wow, does any and all 17' Apple laptop hold resale value
I see one on eBay right now (MacBookPro4,1/A1261) for $75+22.50. It can run Big Sur unofficially with graphics acceleration, and Monterey without.
Did you ever discover the cause of the hitching on Blade Runner? it happened with me too. My thought was possible bandwidth contention issues while streaming a virtual CD drive from the HD.
I couldn’t get this 2:55 CF to IDE adapter to work. I blinks red power light and does not even start the boot sequence. I tried two separate adapters. Looks like some sort of electric issue or BIOS? Works fine with PATA SSD.
Had to double check after seeing the quality. 495 views!? My Muhammad, I could've sworn I had seen 495K views!
Yo, what are you using to display your original ipod? I'd like some of those stands.
Would you please share the floppy model number and the docking station model so I can look for them, thanks
Hey, I perked up right when you mentioned recelling the battery, I actually own a 100ct, it uses the same battery as the 110ct I believe. I'm doing a recell on it, it uses 17670 li-ion cells. I plan on using 17500 cells because they're the same diameter and have a bit more wiggle room for soldering the pack up (I don't have a spot welder). modern li-ion cell shave a bit higher capacity than these far older ones, so the battery life should be like new, if a bit lower.
I still haven't gotten around to re-celling the battery pack, but it sounds like these smaller cells should be fine. And the 17670 cells seem to be nearly impossible to find these days. Good luck with your recell, and please let me know how it goes!
wow
Hi Brian !
Thy x for the video. Can i ask you what is your sound settings for duke nukem 3d ? i have a libretto ct110 too but i can't found the right "dma irq etc.." settings to have sounds. Can you share me your's ?
Thank you very much
I have Duke3D set to launch in DOS mode, and the config is:
Sound FX: Sound Blaster

Sound Blaster or Compatible
Interrupt 5
8-bit DMA 0
16-bit DMA 7
8 voices
16-bit mixing
Stereo sound
16KHz
Music Card: Sound Blaster
Hope this helps! Enjoy your 110CT!
@@brianscomputerretreat6485 perfect thanks you for thw help :)
For the video stuttering issue, you might try a decoder card like the Margi DVD-to-Go which has hardware decoding for MPEG 1 and 2. The Libretto 110ct supports the "Zoom Video" pass-through those cards require built into the card slots. Do you happen to have a link for the CF to IDE adapter? My drive in a 100CT is sometimes going whirr-click-whirr-click when just sitting at the desktop, so I might need one soon and I've heard of issues with other 2.5" to CF adapters with Librettos in the past.
Thanks for the note about the stuttering video! I generally am okay with the occasional stutters, but if I ever see a DVD-to-Go card I may pick it up.
I used this CF adapter, and it works, but I had to disassemble the case a bit because it was a tiny bit thicker than the drive slot. Syba Dual Compact Flash CF to 44... www.amazon.com/dp/B0036DDXUM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Do you know if that card would work on a 70ct?
@@mondomondo1526 I'm not sure off hand. If it has ZV lettering above or near the PCMCIA card slots, it should work though.
@@tom611 Thank you! I just ordered one real cheap.
@@mondomondo1526 Cool, I hope it works for you. I've heard certain laptops need it in a specific slot, so if it doesn't work at first be sure to try it in the other one.
Nice machine, but the fatal flaw for me was the the Sound Blaster Pro: Only does 22.05 kHz in stereo, though it will do 44.1 kHz in mono.
I had a 70ct

I snagged one on eBay after 2 years of waiting for a good price
how much did you end up spending?
I'd love one of these, but using the thumbstick for all the mouse movement would probably give me carpal tunnel in about ninety seconds.
Not shooting the gas cans at the start of Duke3D????
What is this, crazy town? :-P ;-)
Have one of these, with a lot if extras... What I'm missing though is win98 with drivers...
Currently running it on Linux...
You can find the restore disk on the Internet Archive. I’ve uploaded it at archive.org/details/Libretto-110CT-Restore, but someone else also uploaded it with some more details at

@@brianscomputerretreat6485 Thanks a lot!! 😁👍
Wow I can't imagine the 1998 cost of one of these. Probably $2000 at least!
It looks like the Libretto 50CT started out at $1999 in 1997, but was quickly discounted in the US. According to CNet, it was down to only $699 in May of 1998. I think they were much more popular in Japan and likely didn't drop in price as dramatically, but they really didn't take off here in the states.
@@brianscomputerretreat6485 Wow, thanks man. Very cool to know! Hope it's still going strong

Actually, Libretto in Italian mean "small book"
hey man, very good video quality and i like the attention to the audio quality, keep it up you really deserve more subs,if you need any files or equipment shoot me a message Soul ;-;#9713
This was NOT a palmtop. Never was advertised as one. Palmtops were limited, this was a full functional computer. Palmtops ran Windows CE at the time this computer came out. Apples Newton was dead by this time as well. Just saying, i worked in the industry when this computer came out and we did not sell the Libretto as a palmtop. ;-) Nice video tho, i owned a 166mhz version of this, but i always had a mouse with me. :-)
I love/hate this laptop. The battery doesn't hold - naturally, so your corded while using - the screen has a limited viewing angle, hence you need to be constantly looking with your back and eyes on the same position, straining your body. Lack of USB makes me nuts. The keys are crammed together: the world has evolved to a minimum of a netbook-tablet-sized keyb which far comfortable to this. I only think about gutting this thing out, screw history and put in an rpi, better keyb, better screen.
