It is a historic first for Saudi Arabia. The kingdom has officially entered the Miss Universe pageant this year for the first time. The global event is set to take place in Mexico on September 18. In an announcement shared on Instagram, 27-year-old Rumy Alqahtani revealed her participation as the Kingdom’s first-ever contestant in the international beauty pageant. But is it truly a progressive move? Beauty pageants have declined in popularity as they continue to reduce women to mere objects of scrutiny and judgement. So why then is Saudi Arabia describing its progress by a catwalk? Palki Sharma tells you.
