  • Drive a Grand National for long enough, and you'll find yourself in a fight outside a pub with a mustache in a 77 Chevette. But you'll win every time, because you have the righteousness of choice on your side. Maybe your left hook isn't as strong, and your haymaker isn't as wild, but dammit, you have taste. And that counts for something. An ass-kicking something. You bang like a champ because you don't know when the next time will be. And that kind of dedication means you'll never be un-bung again.
Your Summit Girl will hate that she let you go, because she'll see you in a Grand National, and she'll say, “You know what? He's driving automatic, but that's a Man for All Seasons right there.” And she'll know, because she's dating a Lion In Winter. A feckless, limp-dicked, do-nothing shell of a man who doesn't know what to do with his free time in the NFL off season.
-It's everything right and good, and a little bit off, with the world. It's the bitter taste of a smoker's nicotine kiss, and the welcoming, cushiony pocket of her vagina. You're home now. You're slopping around in the primordial ooze. The Grand National loosens the pickle jar of human goodness. It takes you back to a past that's irretrievably but eternally present, just on the edges of your consciousness, like all good things. Capable of being called up on a drunken night. Because sometimes, you just get drunk, and sometimes you start thinking about where you come from, and sometimes you call your mom just to hear her voice. And when she asks why you called, you just say, “I have a missed call from you. But maybe it's old. My phone doesn't say.” You both know it's bull, but you both let it go, because you're a grown man, and you can't just say, “I needed to hear you, mom. I was in a Grand National today, and I can see it all. Stretched out in front of me like it happened yesterday. Playing Turtles In Time and drinking Juicy Juice out of a triangle-shaped hole you made with a can-opener handle.” So you bite your lower lip and put on a brave face.
The Grand National is automatic, but no one's emotions are that simple.

Me too, I lost my Mom when I was only 22 and I had a lot of regrets. I was never mean to her or anything like that, but I moved out just before I was 18 and kinda did my own thing for years without keeping in touch as much. Makes me regret not visiting more. SpaceManDawn I definitely miss it dearly. It was a crazy car to drive around town. Folks waving, giving you thumbs up, people wanting you to floor it. I would park it and folks would be waiting for me to return so they could ask questions or share their story about their past Grand National run-ins. I don't regret selling mine particularly, because it needed a paint job, new window/door/t-top rubbers, etc. and I didn't have the desire to take that project on. I just miss the experience of driving it. It made me feel like a kid again, riding in my parents old 80s GM cars.

The GN unset the balance of power at GM when Buick built a car faster than the Vette, which earned the Grand National the nickname The Vette Killer. Let me tell you the Chevy division was none too pleased to take a back seat to the Buick in the later 80's... but thats the way it was back in glory days of the Grand National.

But your not mentioning that the Corvette could still beat it on a warmer day.The Grand national at 35 degrees outside could break 5 seconds 0-60 but when it was 75 plus outside The time Rose to 6 seconds or more. That's the hidden secret that grand national owners know but they won't tell anybody. On say a 90 degree day an 85 automatic Corvette will beat any grand national because the Corvette won't be as affected by the heat.

    • @jdgreen214
      @jdgreen214 3 роки тому +8

@@danielwatne5535 All you have to do is add alcohol and that problem is fixed. They actually had a plan for methonal injection the dash even has a light called "power injection" When they couldn't get the alcohol injection past safety standards without a major redesign they axed the idea. With alcohol they cars were 12 second cars from factory. The cooling effect from alcohol helps even when the temperature isn't very cool. Also in colder temperature the cars were above 300hp on stock cars this was also confirmed by a lead designer.

Other than under the influence of high quality MDMA from the late 90s, I have never felt more empathy with another human being than I did with you for the 20 or so seconds of giggling in this video.
I giggled like that behind the wheel once... I had a Cletus Duke kinda shop swap out the stock 280 cid V8 for their junk yard's 350 Rocket in my '80 Olds Cutlass about a week before. The carb was shot, and I didn't have enough cash left over to have them fix it, so they set it at a fast idle, and I got it back from the boonies to downtown Halifax using just my brakes. it was a sad, sad week.
Thursday, I used my high two-figure pay cheque to buy a carb rebuild kit at Canadian Tire, and spent Saturday rebuilding the 4bbl Rochester. And re-rebuilding. And before my high school shop teacher stopped taking my calls, re-re-rebuilding. Finally, the carb was back in one piece, and not pissing gas all over me, the engine compartment, my neighbour's windows, and her flower box in a manner that made lawn sprinklers jealous.
I back out of the driveway, and give 'er some gas. Fail. Nothing changed. I went for a drive anyhow, in a funk as blue as the smoke from a chainsaw.
Well, some minutes into that drive of shame, I found myself first at a stop light. It turned green, and I angrily shoved the gas pedal about half way. It stumbled and nearly stalled out, as expected... and then the now warmed-up engine digested whatever bit of schmutz that had been clogging its works, and the Olds surged ahead suddenly, with a rush of torque that seemed like it'd never peak, not unlike what I figure the GN's turbo lag felt like.
And I giggled. Just like you. And gave it more gas, and giggled harder. Just like you.
Thanks, Mr. Regular. You made my day, with a Nah, and a giggle.

Intercoolers started in 86. And the 8th digit of the VIN should be an 8 if it is a grand national. Trunk lids are able to be replaced so someone could bolt a gn trunk lid on a regal. I had an 86 gn and it was awesome, but id love a regal t type, because its a good sleeper and black sucks to keep clean.

Alfred van Kuik , don't feel bad, there are only a handful of 86-87 GNs/T-Types I've found here in the US, and only one GNX...and that last one is pricey ($75K US, it's number 503, claims to have been fully restored to as new). Local to me, too, so I'm considering selling organs.
I'm also one of the few who'd rather have a T-Type, because not black, and kinda fly under the radar.

If the GN is the hit album, and the GNX is the hidden track, then the '87 WE4 Turbo Regal is the "previously unreleased" track you see in an ad 10 years after the band broke up.
Imagine that same exact GN with chrome bumpers, your choice of colors inside and out, and various aluminum parts to bring the weight down. That was the '87 WE4.

If buick had been allowed to make a smaller car that was more of a 4-5 seater 2dr instead of a 2+2, and given a RWD platform with this engine, and the option of the 200r4 or t-56 they would have thrived. Unfortunately Buick could have just beefed up some internals, used a bigger turbo, and called it a
day. That would have eaten a ZR1 in a church lady car, so it didn't happen. If they let Pontiac do the same things in 89 the TTA would have been the king of the hill. GM protects the vette! A lighter weight manual trans vehicle that was RWD with the 3.8sfi would have reaked havoc on the whole industry. GM is a shit company because they let politics like this get in the way of progress.
