  • Hi, I am Bob VE3UK from Pyramid Machinery which is the parent company of MagLoop and Monarch Capacitors. Today I am giving a brief introduction on how you can easily make your own butterfly style variable capacitors using the plates the I produce using CNC Laser technology. To get an idea of how many plates you may need for a given required capacitance maximum, please visit my Monarch Capacitor Site's calculator here: www.monarchcapa...

    It is better to apply brass materials. Higher cost ofcourse and more consistent ESR and also lower ESR. Good share, buddy

    Hi Gareth, as of this moment all that I have been supplying have been "custom" orders as everyone seems to have different requirements. Large loop, small loop, QRP, QRO and all these factors change what the capacitors values need to be. However, I see a need to standardize a kit perhaps a 10 through 120 pF capable of 5KV or 100 Watts or so. Thank you for your interest. Bob

    Wow link still a no go. how much are the plates?

    Obviously this is excellent workmanship, but since charges accumulate on pointed and sharp ends, I would have rounded off all points and corners and edges, Not only it would stand higher voltages but it would have less stress mechanically at those corners where the holes for the bolts are placed in the fixed and rotary vanes, If as I an conclude those vanes were cut with a Cad operated milling machine, it would be easy to round off the corner. The edges may take a llitle longer. Excellent work nevertheless.

    have you ever applied a dielectric coating "from paint to a heat shrink able plastic" to the plates to boost a variable air dielectric caps high voltage rating.

    The minimum capacitance will be directly related to the number of plates used. So say for a 100pF max, you are looking at roughly a 10pF minimum. I hope that helps. I have a calculator that I reference in my description above that may help you as well. Thank you. Bob

    What is the benefit of this butterfly style over a half disc shape style ?
    A design with 3 or even 4 fixing points on one plate would be much more straight an stable by nature !

    That is NOT 7/16". All this time watching, learning "how to" yet I have no paycheck for my time I gave you, and you still have my precision machined, huge ass variable cap plates (very close tolerance) that will handle lots of power when I key up.

    Hi.
    If one wanted to position the plates much closer together, could you use some plastic film between the conductive plates to prevent them from shorting.
    Would the plastic film affect the integrity or general function of the variable capacitor in any way ?

      i have used clear coat spray paint with success on variable caps that arced in their lifetime, the application was in a 1kw lineer amplifier Plate cap, sanded the culprit down, assembled and sprayed the lot, never looked back since.

    Hello Bob. Just checking in. I'm in a better space now and can do 3D printing in at least two different materials. I'd be interested in getting some plates to model up an assembly. I'm on your Magloop email list. 73 K4RJJ

      It is aluminum... However, if this was to be used outdoors, you would want to incase it in a weather proof box.

    PortableQRP for a radio tuning circuit why use such a large Variable Capacitor?

    • @sweetguy19762
      @sweetguy19762 9 років тому +1

      Virtualgod2009 o wow that is cool, I thought about building a huge tesla coil but that will be for another project. My induction heater works real well now, ever since I put about 4 capacitors on my induction heater it does not kill the mosfets.

    • @sweetguy19762
      @sweetguy19762 9 років тому

      Virtualgod2009 when I get more advanced, at what point will I have to use an IGBT?

    • @sweetguy19762
      @sweetguy19762 9 років тому

      Yes induction heater. So that tells me that people that are melting thick steel with these high power induction heaters has to use IGBT.

    • @sweetguy19762
      @sweetguy19762 9 років тому

      Virtualgod2009 since IGBTs can handle a lot more voltage, then that tells me It would be a lot harder to blow an IGBT, that means I would not have to use mosfets for my induction heating anymore.
