    During the growing season we move all of our hens to fresh pasture on a daily basis as this makes for the very best eggs! Believe it or not the hens as well as their chicken house can be moved within a matter of just a few minutes. Take a look!

    I saw a similar thing over 30 years ago. In this case, the guy had the coop up on high wheels with a catwalk for the birds. He was ranging them in his dairy-cow pasture. The cows were strip-grazing the pasture with a hotwire that was moved every day. The hens were placed about 3 days behind the cows. This gave the cow pies a chance to dry some and get full of fly larva. The hens scratched the cow pies to pieces and ate the larva. This also spread the manure and nutrients out and prevented the formation of non-grazed "zones of repugnance" around the pies on the cows' next trip across the pasture. I think this was happening somewhere in the eastern US, Virginia or the like on a farm that had a diverse, high integrated organic operation.

      Yeah, it’s a great idea, but nothing new. Even though it seems many think so these days. The method of raising hens in mobile coops has been going on for well over a century.

    Hello, my name is Carlos i just started a free range egg farm in Portugal, no one is doing it here so not mutch info... I am looking for some guidance on how i should do it!
    I have a 100 birds flok right now, all together for 15days now, they came from diferent farms so they are still getting used to each other i gess!
    I am only getting 30 to 40 eggs a day, is that normal? Like 40 of the hens sim to be very young, they run around from the older ones all day, and stay alone in group most of the time. So how long do they take to adapt for this new environment, and flok?
    My plan is to copy must of what you guys are doing, hopefully i can get to 1000 birds, next year!
    Best regards and keep up the good work...

    The hoop house doesn't appear to have a floor, so when you move it do the chickens all just walk along inside? Have you ever had any problems with mooshed birds?

    • @SevenSonsFarm
      @SevenSonsFarm  7 років тому +13

      M.R. Weaver,
      The key is to go slow enough that the birds can move along with the building. Going slow allows the chickens to keep up and prevent any unfortunate mooshing!

    • @TheGuruStud
      @TheGuruStud 6 років тому +2

      Unless their feet got caught under it, I imagine they'd also just get pushed along or rolled at that speed. Also, those chickens aren't the useless white breed. A couple times of moving and they know what's going on. You can see how they're not disturbed at all, it's just a daily occurrence, then time to roam.

I was glad to see pasture-raised eggs show up in our grocery stores last year. Free-range doesn't mean they live in good conditions, just that they can move around a little bit.

    Great info and excellent system here. My question is how big of an area is portioned off for the pen for the electric fence? I seen the coop is 20ftx48ft with 1k hens but how much area do you need for the total set up? I assume you don't come back to the same spot for at least 30 days, correct (to allow the grass to recover and grow)?

    • @SevenSonsFarm
      @SevenSonsFarm  7 років тому +4

      For us, the fenced in area is 164ftx164ft and includes 3 coops, (3K hens). Typically we wait two months, but wouldn't be worried to bring this down to a 45 days.
