I hike and wild camp/bushcraft to fight depression and anxiety. I can escape the modern world, pressure and expectations. It's literally saved my life!
Exercise, adventure, enjoy nature, escape realities of everyday life, got me thru my divorce, it got and kept me sober( 1 week shy of 1 year) allows you to decompress and enjoy and see the simple things. Another great video Devin. And congrats on the new job. 💚🌲✌🏼
This was BRILLIANT!! I am not sure why but I had tears welling up while watching this and all the genuine responses here and in the comments. Thanks you all truly!!!
Just got back from a short day hike. It's something I need to as others have said. For spiritual growth, to decompress. and plus I've been hiking off and on for most of my life. It's fulfilling and enjoyable.
Definitely enjoyed the video. Hiking/backpacking and being on trail out in nature is the “real world “, the here and now. I find the sense of who I am and not what I am to others.
I like to say that backpacking is the perfect metaphor for Life. You set a goal, plan, prepare and head out into the world. You will shoulder a burdern that may at times hinder you, but you can always address your burdens and lighten your load. You will face obstacles towards your goal, experience pains that might push you to your limits, or even doubts if you can continue, but you perservere. And if you reach that summit, vista, lake, or whatever you’ve been trying to get to you still have to return to where you’ve started from. But you will be filled with memories, experiences, and aches. But you survived to live and plan another journey. Yes you can accomplish this on your own. However, as in life, it’s nicer to share the expericene with those you care about.
A truly original video. This could be a completely original style. It's just real people and real stories. Really well done especially this year think more people need to see the happiness in these stories.
I started hiking in the boy-scouts in the early seventies, doing mostly two to three day hikes. Then life took me elsewhere. Marriage and babies confined me. Six years ago I finally convinced my wife to go tent camping on campgrounds but she couldn’t be persuaded to leave creature comforts for real hiking. Four years ago I discovered via UA-cam what thru-hiking was. There are no infrastructures, here in Québec that are similar to what’s in the States but there are a multitude of short trails that you can add to one another. You have to hike long stretches alongside roads and bushwhacking through wild places, which means that you must carry a lot of food sometimes but it’s a start... I’d love to do the Appalachian Trail but I’m getting old and my health may not permit it... but I LOVE hiking!
Hiking allows me to connect spiritually to the world around me, and it helps me become a better person. I feel like my mind is free and it allows me to enjoy the simple things. Thank you for the wonderful video Devin!
Very nice presentation Devin! For many of us the outdoors on foot is so much more than simply entertainment or a hobby. It feeds real needs, some times hard to recognize or articulate, seldom found elsewhere.
GREAT JOB! I absolutely loved your comments and story. You touched my heart in a great way. Thank you! Keep doing what you love and love what you are doing. Take care and have a wonderful day. 👍😀💗
Loved the guy that talked about dealing with depression. I teared up a bit there, I can relate. It’s does more than any pill, for me at least. God bless
This touches the heart cause they hit the nail on the head. It's where I belong and so many others too. Some of us just wouldn't go home if we didn't have too.
Wow! Very nice man. This turned out to be a great video as your production and editing skills are really great, I'm mean like professional great. Thanks to all the people who shared their story's also 👍 I heard a common theme here about these crazy times...Choose Kindness always. Even if you disagree with someone to your core find a way to show love and learn from them and hopefully we can all learn from each other. How many times have I been so certain I was right and discovered I was wrong in some way. Almost every time. If we shout and share our ideas without love we are just noise. Peace and Happy Trails 😎
GREAT segment by Perry Taylor. LOVED IT! To be completely honest, it made me get emotional, in a good way. Absolutely perfect. Very similar to what my response would have been. For me, to sum it up in one word, it is all about the "memories". Whether it be for yourself or the ones you are with. Those memories will be with you for forever. Great video Devin. Absolutely loved it.👍😀💗💗
Oh Devin this really spoke deep into my inter self, that last guy is just like a younger me (I'm 68) we have been following the same path. Thanks so much
Thanks to everyone in this video; your stories are such an encouragement for someone like me, who's a total beginner. 🙂👍🇩🇰 I have some issues with my head, which is full of depression and negative thoughts. Many years ago, I realized, that walking mile after mile after mile make my mind be quiet. I used to walk around in the city or all of the highways. It's not until this year, where I turned 49, that I've found the courage to go hiking in nature. I have been wanting to do this since I was 25 and I finally set out on this adventure ... 😀
So many things to say about this video but can’t say it to each clip. Just will say we love that we all seem to have the core of backpacking in our hearts. Love it! Thanks so much Devin for putting this together!
Thank you SO much for this! I can relate to so many...sorry...ALL...of the people and reasons for hiking and backpacking. I started out so very many years ago going canoeing in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. But then after a stormy trip on the lake I tore a tendon on my shoulder and my paddling days were over, but I couldn't let it be the end of me in the backcountry. So I bought a backpack and some hiking boots and set out with some friends. We used to go out fairly regularly, but as happens, lives and circumstances change, people move (I moved to NC!) and I had a lot of years away from what I loved. A few years ago I moved back home to Toronto and didn't have anyone to go backpacking with, so one day I said "f#@% it, I'll go solo" I did one night out and back, forgot my trail map AND my glasses in the car, got lost and took over 7 hours to find my campsite, but I was hooked again. The next year I did a solo 5 day trip. Circumstances have changed again. I don't have a car, and a VERY limited budget, so I can't go out much at all. I got out for a one night out and back on Feb 29 this year with some new friends. The temps went down to -21C! And we didn't die 😄 Then the lockdown happened and we're restricted to just hanging out with people in your own household, and small dedicated "bubble", but I'm single and live alone. I just got out this weekend for some car camping with a single friend who also lives alone and she has a car. My first time out of the city since that one-nighter in Feb. The park has a 10km loop day hike series of trails, it was so satisfying to have the trail under my feet again, and the green tunnel over my head. I'm making a bucket list of trails I want to do in my home province of Ontario, as well as others in Canada. The most ambitious of course is The Great Trail (aka Trans Canada Trail). Total of about 25,000km from Newfoundland to British Columbia (or BC to NL if you're in the west). Typically it takes 2.5 to 3 YEARS to complete as a thru hike. I'll need to win a lottery to be able to do it! 😉 But the Toronto section is just 5 minutes from my door... One foot in front of the other. ☺
Devin - I've watched every single one of your videos over the past few years and this one was great! It sums up the many ways I feel about backpacking and being outside in general. (Hell, if I had seen the posting I would've sent you a clip myself.) Keep em coming!
Thanks man! I posted on the community tab and my Instagram a few weeks back. It came together nice and I think shares a lot of the feelings many of us have about hiking.
@@BackcountryExposure I'll have to keep my eyes open for next time. I definitely liked the last gentleman talking about his progression to solo hiking. While not as old as he is, I felt very similar and now prefer to hike/backpack solo. Hike on my friend!
What a great video with wonderful insights. So many experiences that are at the same time unique and universal. It is a great reminder to just reflect on why we do the things we do, especially this year when I have realized that life really is about the small things. Thank you.
Warm fuzzies from seeing mere usernames and anonymous “followers” become real people with dreams, setbacks, smiles and backpacks. We can slip into assholery as people, but that’s all the more reason to celebrate the random beauty and kindness our complex, messy, selves possess. Kudos!
Devin awesome video like seeing other views from people who enjoy the outdoors. We have not done any longer hikes just short hikes as of now. But soon we will be getting out for some over night trips. Thanks for sharing stay safe on your adventures.
Cool project Devin. The Exercise brings better physical and mental health while transcendence through connection with natural places (especially in the backcountry) continues to provide my life with more meaning.
14:51 "... Well, I slowly gained confidence by keeping after it ... " haaaaa . . . oh my gosh, we were ambitious ! . . . " In retrospect it's amazing we got as far as we did . . . ! " But, It was AMAZING ! heh! I was BACK ! " Beautifully told ! Cheers Hiker Dude ! B-)
For me it started with photography... it started with sunsets at the beach, the Northern Lights, the Milky Way and meteor showers. I wanted to take images of these rare natural events in remote locations, where you have little light pollution, and combine these skies with hills and seascapes. I don't have a car, and have to rely on my bicycle and / or public transport... so I figured that landscape photography and wild camping would go hand in hand. The technicalities on camping gear as well as camera gear are important, but ultimately it's nature that drives me.
Backcountry Exposure lol. Yeah I’m always trying to be a joker. On a serious note this was an awesome video. Always like your videos but this one was different from the normal gear review or on trail videos. Like the concept of this one and loved the responses. I can relate with every single person. 👍👍
