One of the things I've admired about Dune is that, even though it's in the far future, spread across the galaxy, the characters are still people.
The Reverend Mother has supernatural powers with the voice and the ability to draw on race memories, but you still see a human being through it all.
I'm especially reminded of her conversation with Jessica before the move to Dune, dispassionately discussing Duke Leto's impending destruction. When Jessica waivers, HGM says "I wish I could stand in your place, take your suffering."
Her cold, hard demeanor isn't fake, but underneath it, she does have feelings, loyalties, and love.

The BG are my favourite faction in Dune.
Their ways were ruthless and sometimes cruel but always for a purpose and always willing to sacrifice themselves too, not only others.
Also, their play may not even have worked if they had implemented it their way without the interruption that was Paul, but their stated objective was to produce the QH in order to help them guide humanity to refine the savagery out of them to ultimately engineer a more civilised humanity to reduce the suffering of all.

I think it shows that through fanaticism, dogma, hubris and imperfect people the Creator's plan is still achieved even though it might not been the plan of those used to achieve it. The universe functions by balancing various dark and light forces against anarchy and chaos.

@@pakde8002 Well, I'm not sure a detour of tens or hundreds of billions of people being murdered by Paul's forces was the optimal path to reach the goal.
But if the Golden path really was the difference between humanity's survival or extinction then all who came after can be weighed against those hundreds of billions killed and given enough time the disparity will be so massive that even the hundreds of billions would seem like a relatively small price to pay even though it's massive and tragic in absolute terms.

Great video, as always. Mohiam was an interesting character, and I enjoyed her role in Dune Messiah, since it gave her more of a direct hand in what was happening as part of the conspiracy. Her conversation with Scytale was fun, and I thought that the fact that she was disposed of "off-camera" was suitably indicative of how powerless she had become.
One weird thing about Mohiam is that she has metal teeth. I remember the first time I read Dune, and that detail really struck me, even though it's only mentioned once. It gives her a kind of faerie tale hag quality, like the Baba Yaga. The Lynch film is the only adaptation to include it; it's such a small thing, but suitably weird enough that I guess he kept it.

But after years of failure the sisterhood also use allies .expand the conspiracy. In book one she is a member of the sisterhood high council, protor superior, and proctor of the the mother school. ( Charterhouse headquarters) second in command behind the mother superior. Im not positive but she may be mother superior by messiah. She definitely speaks for the order.

I wish you would clarify for people that Gaius Helen Mohiam is not the actual leader of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, that position rests with the Mother Superior. She's also is not the Reverend Mother with the most intimate details up their breeding program, that is with the Kwisatz Mother. However, while there may be thousands of full Reverend Mothers throughout the Imperium, she is still a very high-ranking and important RM, (placed there intentionally by The Sisterhood of course) that being the Emperor's Truthsayer. I think it's also important to clarify for people that lower-ranking Bene Gesserit sisters, like lady Jessica earlier in the novel, are still acolytes in the Sisterhood. While they themselves are very powerful because of their training, they still do not possess the full extent of their powers, including Other Memory, because they have not undergone the Spice Agony and become Full Reverend Mothers. A note on wild Reverend Mothers. I think people often misunderstand what they are too, they are wild in a sense, but they are also a product of the Missionaria Protective. No doubt there are wild Reverend Mothers on many other planets within the Imperium. For example, once a gifted Freman female becomes a Reverend Mother herself, and receives Other Memory going back millenia, she would then become fully aware of her role and place within the Sisterhood, if she didn't already know. Finally, I would speculate that all Reverend Mothers within The Sisterhood probably consider themselves equal of equal rank in a sense because once they receive Other Memory, they are all elevated to the same lofty status.

Jessica's father was a intriguing person too, the Baron and because of the abominable way the Baron treated Mohiam, she gave the once athletic build Baron a disease that made him the fat one we all love. As is the rule withing the Bene Gesserit, children are not told who their mothers are, but find out after teh spice agony ritual.
