This was Portugal's first appearance in a World Cup finals tournament since their first golden era of Eusabio and company 20 years previously. Cheers for this and the numerous other World Cup uploads. Very rare you see any of this game other than Portugal's winner so good to watch the highlights of it - we had more than enough chances to win before being punished by Portugal, who could have won by more in the end. Also an interesting reminder by Jimmy Hill about how much anxiety already existed about the state of Bryan Robson's shoulder before it went against Morocco in the next game.
I think this was broadcast quite late in the evening in England. I remember being in bed and hearing my Dad downstairs go “oh no” and I knew Portugal had scored.
It was the other way round for me. My dad and stepmum had gone to bed but I stayed up to watch it as I was 21,so they probably heard me say "oh no!" and one or two other things besides.

This was considered a big shock at the time. England did improve hugely after this - Portugal in 1986 were not the feared team of later years, with the golden generation of the 90s yet to emerge. But the winning goal scored by Carlos Manuel really does show up how tactically inept England still could be at this point in time - a simple 10 yard cross ignored by 4 zonal defenders (5 in wider shots) all ball watching and ignoring the only runner. The sort of goal you would rarely see nowadays at this level - even taking into account the energy sapping long grass, (which made the exploits of Maradona at this WC even more amazing)
if you watch the soviet union friendly in 1986 pre tourney, England's defensive structure was spot on as was the team generally..poor management by don howe and robson to regress like this in just 9 weeks..
'Not the feared team'? So they took France to extra-time in the 1984 Euro semi-final and beat West Germany in the qualifiers (the first time the Germans had ever lost a qualifier! Yeah, no fear there! The truth was that they were not a threat because English TV was so insular in those days. You had the first division matches and that was it. We knew nothing about European football then.
I don't recall anyone actually giving Portugal a chance before this game which is weird because they came close to winning the 1984 Euros and became the first side ever to beat West Germany in a qualifier in 1985.
This group ended up being another "Death group", Portugal got a third place in Euro 84, Poland got third place in Spain 82 and Morocco had their best team ever. It was a very tough group.

He was just strong phisically in his prime, which was a brief period anyway. I'm a Milan supporter and the difference between Hateley and another (great) striker of that time, Virdis, was like day and night.

That's because it looks like a great win on surface, but the fact is the national team was in turmoil since the early 1980's. Cracks were already visible in 84, and just collapsed in 86. This game is historical because it is the end of an era. After this WC, 8 players never returned, and the national team went to sleep for a decade, the FA focused on the youth generations after this. In 1989, Portugal was U-20 World Champion and U-16 European Champion with the rise of the golden generation, the rest is history. Reasons? too complicated. The post would be huge 😁 I mean there were strikes, wags, lack of paychecks, and this even was an issue on the Parliament. Basically there was a conflict between the players and the FA. There was an overall sense of amateur preparation and mindset, like football was stalled in the 1950's and players were not truly recognized as profissionals. The outcome of this WC was a "necessary evil" to move forward to a different overalll mindset. Carlos Queiroz, after failling to qualify for the 1994 WC, said a historical sentence, "i will only continue if all the crap leave the FA". Even if we don't like him as a coach, he was right about this.

Back then, there used to be only about 30 seconds of injury time in each half. Nowadays, it's about 30 minutes of injury time for each half
