  • Best Ever Muppet Moments. Phillip Schofield narrates and the likes of Frank Oz, Brian (son of Jim) Henson, Mark Hamill, Helen Mirren, Michael Parkinson, Twiggy, Christopher Eccleston and Miss Piggy are interviewed to give their fond memories of the American cultural phenomenon that America initially refused to make.
Truth be told, this sits a little uncomfortably between being a behind-the-scenes documentary of The Muppet Show, a talking heads tribute to the Muppets in general, and a clips retrospective. It's like they knew they had to do something to mark an anniversary - be it the 50th of The Muppets themselves in 2005 or the 30th of the show in 2006 - but couldn't decide exactly which direction to take. Or perhaps it was supposed to be an all-purpose, all-encompassing extravaganza. Either way, though a bit of a mishmash, what they did ultimately go with ended up both funny and interesting, so I suppose there's really nothing to complain about. It's always fascinating to see the actual puppeteers in action, and the lid being lifted like this brings home how much hard work went into each and every scene. There are some good anecdotes throughout, and the excerpts from the original pitch video are truly something to behold. Enjoy!
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

I constantly wonder how many American network executives, head-butted their desks when the Muppet show took off. XD. Thanks for posting this mate.

You're very welcome indeed! That's the thing about network executives: they may know the business, but that doesn't mean they know good entertainment when they see it.

@@patrickmanway290 well tons of others great shows were made in america, really possibly most of iconic tv shows and movies. It’s not being British or not it’s that England’s entertainment industry was crumbling at that time and so making stuff there was super cheap and studios were more willing to do it. A big reason Star Wars was also filmed there is because it’s just way cheaper, the labor and studio space was cheaper but they still had some talent left and skilled labor left. Same reason Americans film in Canada and other states like New Mexico outside of where most studios are based in California it’s just cheaper. Also it isn’t Americans being bad judges its one group of executives, those guys come and go sometimes from year to year. Also the Americans shows made in England were still at the core made by Americans creatively so clearly those Americans knew what they had and worked and traveled thousands of miles to make it happen. They just went to an area slowed down that needed a show more badly and maybe had less to lose. Most British people who worked with Lucas did not at all see what he was doing and many did as little as possible so they clearly didn’t identify potential there. Except for a few people he said in an interview with Nolan that they thought pretty much like American executives that it looked dumb and they were pretty dismissive of him. Actually England even after the first Star Wars was a hit antagonized Lucas about bringing in the American actors for the movie despite how much work he brought England.

it is worth noting that the late Jim Henson traveled to San Francisco, CA back in April 1975 to meet with the station management of the Bay Area's CBS outlet - KPIX-TV 5 - as he sought to pitch ideas for a weekly family-friendly variety program starring the Muppets. incidentally, that handsomely dressed Muppet character looks exactly like former presenter/news anchor Ross McGowan of KPIX-TV 5.

It had something to do maybe with the state of British studios in the seventies and eighties and the cost of making things there vs America particularly at that time. I don’t know if they just daw potential in seemingly wacky American things like the Muppets or another thing filmed in England Star Wars. Actually Lucas has said pretty much almost no one liked it at the studio and they did the minimum and were pretty much mostly dismissive of him and saw acted like it was kind of dumb. And even after the first film was a hit english customs or whoever antagonized Lucas about bringing in a couple of American actors for the film.
Studios in america also film in Canada and other states in america like New Mexico rather than where the studios are in California in order to save on taxes and labor cost.

Well gosh! That's not a big chip on your shoulder about the British is it? 😂 So big you had to try and write it twice! Maybe next time you'll try and read it back to yourself and see whether it makes enough sense for anyone else to understand? 😂

Now, if anyone wants to, pause this at 18:56, right on the spot where Sam puts his face in his hand will get you the best view, and take a look between the back of Sam’s head and right next to Kermit’s face. Now, am I the only one that sees this bit of background creating a reasonable image of Jim Henson’s face, or can anyone else out there see it, too?! 😁👍
