PRO TIP: heat Prismacolors in the microwave to keep the brittle “leads” from breaking when sharpening. This is a result of cheap manufacturing. I still use my Spectracolor set (very rare, now) and my original Prismacolors from the 1990’s, before Sanford (Sharpie, Papermate) bought them and made them cheaper. All I can say is that Faber-Castell is THE way to go, nowadays, unless you like the Lyra-Rembrandt’s which are oil-based. They’re wonderful, but I have not bought them. Really nice review, Mama Kendyll, so thank you! And hope your family is all great! Cheers! :)
Yes, I used to do a version of that with leaving mine on a windowsill in the sun. It does help, but nothing really fixes it for me if the lead is off center. As you said, the quality really went down after they were acquired by Sanford.😭 I'd like to try Lyra as well!
I live in arizona so all i do is set them outside in the summer for a few minutes. I have a few pencils that are over 10 years old (very rarely used colors) and they still sharpen fine. it totally works.
Thanks so much for this tip! I have about a million (it seems) Prismacolor pencils sitting in cans, mostly unused. Anything to help sharpen them. Now I mostly use Conte Pastel pencils though. I'm an acrylic painter on wood ( these days haha ) and I love the ability to use the Contes to add something, If I don't like it, I cna erase it with a wet paper towel. Or if I do like it I usually just paint over it with acrylic, or some matte medium. I just bought a set of Faber Albrecht Durer pencils. I wanted the Magnums though, so I ordered one of them!! I'm going to have pencils coming out my ears... hahaha That's ok, I have an 11 year old who wants to learn how to be an artist. He might "inherit" a bunch of pencils :)
Thank you for this video. I was so upset that couldn't buy prismacolor as you used and had to buy faber-castell. I love them, but you make me happier now
Hi, Kendyll :D I'm so happy to see you finally using the Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürrer pencils! I love them my self so much. I know they are expensive, I picked each individually with thought. But they are well worth the price. And I never used the Prisma colors before, so I always wondered how they would compare. So thank you for the video! Keep up the great work :) Flavia
Yay, I'm so glad you did this review! I've had the Faber-Castell watercolor pencils for a few years now, and when I started watching your channel and saw your devotion to Prismacolor I thought maybe I was missing out on something! ☺️ That's how much I trust your opinion! I still have my Prismacolors, too, I let my 13 year old use them for his art (but I am super selfish with my Faber-Castell!)
Thank you for this comparison! I just found your channel and am so glad I did. I'm not new to art, but I'm just venturing into the arena of watercolor. My hope is to hone my illustration skills and make a career of it. Since I'm just starting out, I only got the 12-pack. But I love mixing my own colors, so I think I have enough to get started and can always add to my stash as I go along. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 😁❤
There's only a few good reviews about Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils online and I thoroughly enjoyed yours. I have received a set as a gift last year. I am not an expert or whatsoever but I really like it especially when used for pieces that need vibrant colors.
9:05 when sharping they say to use a knife and do it the old fashioned way. That's what I was told. I am new to water colour pencils though and that's why I am here.
I love that other brands are starting to be used. On the other hand, I have a twenty year old collection of Prismacolor pencils including many discontinued colors and I don't see myself switching anytime soon. Good to know about the Faber-Castell though. I use their other products.
Cant believe I lost half of my faber castel watercolor coloured pencils -___-" Haven't used them since uni... I've always wondered what prisma colour feels like.. Thanks for this comparison! I think I'll stick with my faber castel
Not sure if now in 2022 the Faber-castells are not made as well as several years ago when these reviews were posted... I'm returning a set of 24 in favor of the prismacolor watercolor pencils which I purchased for my 10 year old granddaughter ... We each did the same painting and the color saturation and blending of the prismacolors far exceeded that of the Faber-castell Magnus .... sticking with Prismas. ..
This exactly answers my questions about these two brands. I've also heard good things about Arteza water-colour pencils, but looking around it seems these aren't made any longer. I primarily paint with acrylics, but want to branch out to something that doesn't require an easel, so a smoother/better blending product is going to probably be more satisfying. Thank you so much for this! Review was awesome, I'm totally subscribing. :)
Thank you for this comparison! Now going on my Christmas list 😊 I don't yet have a set of watercolor pencils, I have been using Derwent Inktense and really enjoy the vibrancy and they are essentially dried ink so I cannot achieve a very light color with them easily nor can I fully blend them out. Wonderful product, just different uses. I'm very happy to know about these and to test them out too! Thank you again 💕
I still haven't tried the Polychromos -- I'd like to, but from what I've read they're a bit harder and I really like my soft core pencils to be... soft. Planning to just pick up a few next time I'm at the art supply store.
Hi Kendyll, I use the Albrecht Dürer Pencils as well and really like them, but unless my other colored pencils they don't fit into my sharpener very well, because of their unusuaI shape. I always have to squeeze them into my Brass Bullet Sharpener and that damages the edges of the pencils. What sharpener do you use with the Albrecht Dürer pencils? BTW Thanks a lot for keeping up this informativ channel, I love to watch your videos!
Yes, had the same problem with these! Ironically, I have to use an older Prismacolor sharpener for them, but I just ordered a new one from Blick last weekend that has 6 different sizes, so I'm hopeful that'll work well. So nice to hear that the videos are valuable for you!!☺️💕
@@KendyllHillegas Ah ok! Thanks for the answer! Maybe I'll try one of the Faber Castell sharpeners, I guess they should fit as well, since it is directly from the company. I'll let you know :D Your videos are absolutely great!
I'm definitely getting Faber Castell after watching this. Thank you Kendyll!!! By the way have you tried Derwent Watercolor pencils? I was wondering if you had any experience with them?
Hi! Thank you for sharing this video 😊 do you have video comparison polychromos FC vs prismacolor premier? I confused to chose one of them.. Prismacolor premier have more variety of color, but i think polychromos more hefty, isn't? Do you have any suggestion? Thank you 😊
I want to buy some watercolor pencils, but I don't know which ones are the best, I am wondering between prismacolor, arteza and faber castell, which ones do you recommend?
I bought an expensive sharpener that I heard would stop prismacolor pencils lead snapping it's got 5 settings and you just turn the handle and it's so satisfying. But then you take your pencil out and there's only a 3rd left of it. I have not dare use it on my carandache. I love prismacolor and like Faber-Castell but nothing compares to carandache. When it comes to water colour pencils prismacolor no no. And people I trust say fiiber castell. Ive got derwent and intense but I.dont like them so I've only just bought fiber castell and it's totally different. There only.$45 for 32 I think that's cheep. Good luck everyone
The Polychromos are colored pencils, while the Aquarelles are watercolor pencils. The Aquarelles are used like the Albrecht Durers. The Polychromos you don't use water with them. They are an oil based colored pencil. Now the difference between the Aquarelles and the Durers is that the Durers are an artist grade watercolor pencil, whereas the Aquarelles are more student grade.
Hi, I know this video is not about commissions, but are you able to help with how you constructed your commissions contract, please. Need help since I was previously burned. The commission was oh and ah about till I told her about the price. She said she had no $$ to pay it, all my work for nothing. Please I am seeking your professional assistance. 😊
Hi Giselle, you can watch my video about contracts here: ua-cam.com/video/15ImEIrWciY/v-deo.html. This video ( ua-cam.com/video/jnap3QFuuz8/v-deo.html) also has some info on dealing with revisions. Finally, I recommend buying a copy of the GAG Handbook for pricing and ethical guidelines (amzn.to/2ybU53q) which has great contract templates. Good luck!
I knew she was going to say "sharpening the pencil". This can drive you crazy. Try using an eyeliner sharpener. They seem to work better. Perhaps because this pencil is used on the eye and the makers are afraid of being sued.

Kendyll Hillegas Lyra is really affordable (less than $1 per pencil) , and some cute colours. It’s very firm, not soft like prismacolour

Thank you so much, Flavia! I agree -- they are definitely a beautiful pencil. ☺️💕

I’m getting these tomorrow and I’m so excited!!
Very helpful and straightforward comparison! Thank you 😊
Faber castell are the best that is what I use too!

You should try out the polychromos from faber castell they are soooo smooth and they are oil based
I am glad you mentioned the prismacolors breaking, I thought that was just me! LOL.
thanks for the amazing detailed and super helpful review!

Glad it was helpful! A number of people have mentioned Inktense -- they're on my try again list!💕
I'm late to this conversation but thought I would add that Faber Castell's are supposedly eco-friendly too, so I love that:)
Oh that's great to know! Thanks for sharing. :)
Thank you for your review, i love faber castell and i have the polycrhromos the range of colours are insane, i need it all!!!
I still haven't tried the Polychromos -- I'd like to, but from what I've read they're a bit harder and I really like my soft core pencils to be... soft. Planning to just pick up a few next time I'm at the art supply store.
Thank you for this review. I’m wondering if you can lift some of the colors after rewetting them, the way you can with regular water colors?
I just don't find a review helpful that doesn't show actual painting/drawing/coloring with the pencils.

Years ago, but they're on my list to try again as I used them before I really was comfortable with water soluble pencils. Glad you liked the video!
Hi! Thank you for sharing this video 😊
do you have video comparison polychromos FC vs prismacolor premier?

Prismacolor premier have more variety of color, but i think polychromos more hefty, isn't?

Wonderful
Thank you for your help!
so what is the difference between watercolor pencils and polychromes
(both from faber castell)
One is a watercolor pencil, and the other is just a regular colored pencil that will not react to water.
I want to buy some watercolor pencils, but I don't know which ones are the best, I am wondering between prismacolor, arteza and faber castell, which ones do you recommend?
I recommend ✨faber castell✨
Me too!👍

Kendyll Hillegas I have seriously been debating getting Faber castelle forever, I only have prisma colors and I don't know what I want!

I have prismcolors because o am not a proffesional
The Prismas are still great! I continue to use them and recommend them as they're a way more affordable option 👍🏻
