    What a perfect representation of my face when learning this language ( ייִ ). Going through a brand new alphabet is always a challenge, but this language had a special surprise. Other than the difficulties of learning how to read again (for the 9th and almost final time in this series), Yiddish is quite an easy ride, especially if you have some experience with German and even English. The Hebrew alphabet (or abjad?) is not too complex, but you do have to rewire your brain to read right-to-left.
    As usual, the Duolingo course branched into the weirdest and most absurd words and sentences one can imagine, but that's the beauty of it. I might not be able to say "Hello, how are you" in Yiddish, but now I know how to say "A pizza in a pyramid".
    This video is split into 2 parts, this one is only for the alphabet lessons in Duolingo, and the next part will cover the remaining (and more complex) part of the course.

    I'm guessing that they started with those absurd sentences because those are such close cognates with English, and they want to help you get used to the script.

      To be fair Duolingo doesn't sit you down and explain to you every grammar bit during the lessons, it moreso kinda appears "naturally" for you to get the hang of it. Not sure if that would make it faster or slower though 😅

    • @jccbm
      @jccbm  Рік тому

      Probably, but it does check the boxes of a "hard language". Complex grammar, no connections to most languages around it, a wide variety of sounds. It does seem pretty consistent overall, which in my opinion makes languages simpler to get used to.
