Ask Dickey! E41: Help! My 4C Hair Is Drier after I Wash N Go

  • If not done frequently enough, wash n go's can be damaging to your 4A-4C texture and will actually dry out your hair. Because kinky textures tend to be drier, cowashing and wash n go's need to happen more frequently to keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and silky smooth. For kinky hair textures, Dickey recommends that your hair care and styling routine is incorporated into your shower routine, including the products that you use.

Don’t be mad at Dickey for speaking the truth, for those who disliked this video. Plus, if you’re wearing your hair out and free, blowing in the wind fabulous, it dries out even more. Water and conditioner is a curly girl’s best friend.

After following Dickey's advice and method, I found it to be "LIFE CHANGING"...(was that TOooo Dramatic??? LOL) ...Everyone's hair is DIFFERENT. 4C is just a CATEGORY!!! I agree I do wash n gos and my hair is thriving. I have 4b hair and I used to think that wash and goes were not good for my hair either until I learned how to perfect my wash and go!! I do a quick co wash every other day in the shower and reset my wash go and on days in between my quick co washes I mist my hair with water and oil. I do this until wash day. I wash my hair once a week with a clarifying shampoo and deep condish once a week

I have 4a hair (with some 3c) and wash and goes are my go to style. I shampoo once a week and restyle my hair via CO-Washing about ever 2 days (some times I can get a third day). Since I do it in the shower I find it convenient and quick and being that it's not the winter I can just go about my day and not worry about drying it. I sit under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes in the winter. I sleep on a silk pillowcase and find it easy, quick and liberating-so happy I went natural!

I think alot of 4 textured women attribute the feeling of moist hair to oily or greasy hair....the idea of if it doesnt feel oily or greasy its dry,and in reality what we think may be dry is indeed moisturized with water and conditioner which penetrates unlike the oily coating that grease leaves.

With natural hair, I love that I am no longer running from water and can condition/moisturize my hair frequently with water in the shower. (Thank you for stressing this, Dickey!) When I do a wash-n-go style, I reset in the shower every two to three days. My hair type is 4B, dry. I have to use really moisture-rich products that can keep my hair moist in between those two to three days. When I use the wrong products, I have dry hair even on the first day of my "wash-n-glow" style.

Curly Magic by Uncle Funky's Daughter is a really good gel. A couple of days ago I tried it along with Shea Moisture Raw Shea Detangler in the shower (a little bit of both). I thought it would be too heavy together, but my hair was defined, moist and not sticky to the touch. Those were the only two products I used on soaking wet hair. I could get another day out of it but I won't stretch it this weekend. :) I hope that helps!

This happened to me as well and I figured out that the problem was every product I was using had PROTEIN!! So protein in the conditioner, protein in the leave in, protein in the styling products - let me tell you - in two weeks my hair was getting dry and brittle! Check your product ingredients. If you are stacking products with protein and your hair is sensitive to protein, then it can be disastrous. I carefully read ingredients and avoid protein overload. Hair is thriving with the Dickey method. Hope this helps someone.

Another thing I don't like about washing everyday that my hair looks so shrunken on the first two days after washing. My hair starts to look its best the longer I wear my wash n go. @@DannielleElliott To elongate your hair while wearing a wash n go style, let it dry first. Then, separate hair in about 4 sections using the banding method. Be sure to not band the ends to ensure that your curls are preserved. I found this technique from Naptural85. It works wonderfully!

My 4c hair takes too long to dry and my hair would be constantly wet if I wash n go everyday. But I have figured out how to make my wash n go last for at least 7 days. Many naturals on youtube get 7 day wash n gos. I don't get the washing everyday concept. Too much manipulation for my kinky hair. I think everyone is different and you just have to figure out what works for you. Some 4c's thrive off of twist outs, and my hair looks a hot mess with twist outs. Just learn what your hair thrives off of. I will admit I wash n go'd my hair daily in the very beginning when doing the Maximum Hydration Method. That method helped me learn what my hair needed to curl and helped me to master the wash n go concept. It took me at least a year to truly master it, but it was worth all the bad hair days. Now I get compliments all the time and people ask how I get my hair to curl!

Sis, I have 3c/4a very fine, low density (thin) and high porosity, which means my hair was always dry no matter how often I deep conditioned my hair, which was once and sometimes twice a week, as well as rotated between protein and moisturizing conditioners. However, since I started washing my hair with conditioner every day in the shower, which takes me only about five minutes or less and use Mouse or Hair Milk as my styler and set under my dryer for 30 minutes (I do this at night) to dry, my hair has been flourishing. It is very moisturized, soft to the touch and my curls are defined. I will continue to at least shampoo (clarify my hair when I need to and do a deep conditioning treatment when I clarify..... I have tried the maximum hydration before and that is a lot of work and product and my hair still ended up dry the day or two afterwards. I find using one conditioner every day (the more you do it the less product your hair will need, because we are training our hair) and a styler and I am good. I will eventually start doing it every other day, but for right now, I am enjoying how my hair looks every day, which is WOW!!!!! Totally Amazing!!!!! I could not say that in the eleven years I have been natural.

The reason why wash and gos are drying for type 4 hair is because due to the tightness of our natural coils its impossible for the oils to travel down our scalp to the hair strand. Due to this, The only way Type 4 Naturals can keep their hair moisturized is by soaking their hair in water and applying the proper products to trap the moisture from the water into our hair cuticles. However, products can only keep the moisture trapped into our hair for so long before our hair needs to be remoisturized again by soaking our water and trapping it in with products. Mean while stretched styles such as twist outs and braids outs keep the hair better moisturized by loosening the curl pattern from root to tip. Allowing for better oil distribution. Hope this helps with your question

He fails to mention porosity and hygral fatigue. Type 4 hair doesn’t need to be wet everyday to be healthy or grow long. People with dread locs down their backs is a perfect example. The LOC method prevents dryness if done with quality oils and creams. You will get length retention and less single strand knots. Hair rubbing against a cotton shirt is disastrous and it shouldn’t be worn down everyday. The key is less manipulation. Type 4 hair can be curly Or coily and sometimes both it’s not naturally dry it just doesn’t retain moisture as long.

Wow! My experience with wash and gos with my type 4 hair has been totally different than you described in this video! I have type 4a, b and c and I started doing wash and gos this summer because I started working out and wanted to refresh my hair. I shampoo on Sunday and deep condition and do wash and go styling and my hair stays moisturized for days. I cowash on Wednesday and do another wash and go style. My hair is loving it! It’s softer, more manageable and seems to be maintaining moisture better than it was before. I’m wondering if there’s something about the products or the technique that’s causing the questioner’s hair to dry out. Or the climate perhaps?
And in one of the Hair Rules videos on wash and go styling on kinkier hair types, you told the type 4 model that she could get 2, maybe 3 days tops out of her wash and go style before she’d have to redo it. This seems like you’re contradicting your own advice.

Yup wash and go on 4c hair daily is not practical at all. No one has time for this. Also 4c hair doesn’t like this much manipulation. Sitting under a hooded drier every day sounds like a bad idea too because my 4c hair takes too long to dry.

If her hair is dry then she definitely can not get away with stretching it 2-3 days. She needs to wash and go everyday. If you don’t want to do that much manipulation. Rock a protective style.

I will say that I have 4c hair. Very dry porous and coarse. In 2009 i had a sew in. It was wet and wavy. My hair was relaxed, but again it was by nature, dry, porous, coarse, but relaxed. As a kid I had a relaxer by age 7. My hair always grew passed my shoulder, and had volume. Because of my hair I HAD to get a deep conditioner on the regular, and a trim. A retouch every 6 weeks. I was in the salon every two weeks. Back to 2009. My own hair wouldn't grow past my ears. Then I got the sew in. Every morning I stood under the shower wetting the hair and running conditioner through it to make it look like it should. Aka co-wash. In less than a year my own hair had grown an inch past my bra strap. It was because of the protective style, and the daily co-wash. But now that I have no relaxer my hair is super dry and I don't want to get a sew in because it locs to easily, but I will go back to co-washing every day. It's the truth for my type hair.

I think that there is confusion around exactly what a wash and go is. I think people assume that if you are washing and going that you are literally just washing your hair putting in product and leaving your hair out. You’ve never never clarified or suggested that “daily washing and go STYLING” could mean that you wash your hair and put your hair in a style like large flat twists, a roll tuck and pin a bun, Etc. I think that when people wash and go and just leaving their hair out, yes it’s going to be dryer. Especially if you are a 4.

I’m 4c and I don’t think my hair can stand that much water everyday , when I was washing my hair once a week and detangling in shower, my hair became soooo limp, and as soon as I changed to detangling outside of the shower and washing my hair in braids once every two weeks the elasticity came back, is moisture overload not a thing?

But doesn’t this all depend on the hardness of the water in your area? What do you do if you have hard water? Shower filters and water softeners are a complicated topic...

Where do we send our questions? I have type four, low porosity hair I believe, and it’s in a short cut at the moment. Since doing wash and gos the Dickey way I’ve seen my curls pop like never before, amazing really!! However, I live in the U.K. and there’s not much option for stylers, other products, and proper hair advice. What are the right consistency type products to weigh my hair down and keep the curls super defined? Is it custards, lotions, butters etc? I know (eco style black castor oil) gel works but it’s quite hard to work through my hair shaft.. I feel like butters do not define my curls a whole lot.

Good information. I’m wondering if the product the writer is using is not a good fit for her coils, or if she works out a lot? When working out, my head sweats up something serious. There is a ton of salt in my sweat and that will do a number drying out my hair. I also wear color. Because of this I DO NOT stretch my wash and go beyond a day. I’m straight from the shower and out the door with an hour max. Nice moisturized and lush coils. #Ilovemyhair

Katherine Miller I didn’t before discovering Hair Rules on UA-cam and Dicky’s products. Prior to then I air dried and I’ve returned to just letting it dry naturally. My hair doesn’t feel crispy now. I should say though that I have not tried air drying with his products. I got kinda scared after that first experience.

Santosha Padfield my stylist, Lisa, taught me to use Ouidad and Paul Mitchell Pomade. I’ve experimented and I prefer the Ouidad curl immersion custard (my stylist uses the gel and it works well). I use a small amount of the Paul Mitchell. For conditioner, I alternate between Joico K Pak and Design Essentials Almond Butter Express. I make certain to saturate my hair with water...like really well. I also use a liberal amount of conditioner. Hope this helps

There are a lot of blow dry naturals with great results in length retention. How often can a high porosity, low to medium density, 4C texture safely blow dry without damaging tresses using the tension method?

You missed his point. He saying if you condition your hair well ( as in train) your hair it will not need those thick butters and gels. Over time your hair will curl up and maintain with simply conditioning and oiling your hair. He is also implementing a clean scalp which helps hair growth.

aliyah case i'm actually 4b, 4C and after my wash and go I sit under a dryer for about 45 min and then go to bed. My hair is dry the next morning... the hair drying is indirect heat and will not damage your hair. My hair is fully dru the next morning. No need to go days with wet hair. The wash and go looks just as good😃

aliyah case So after sitting under the dryer for about 45minutes the outter portion of my hair is practically dry so I then either sleep on a satin pillowcase most of the time. Lol lol or a satin bonnet. I don't section my hair to stretch it, it stretches on its own over the week... if your hair is really long you can pineapple on top of your head. I just don't like manipulating my curls. The sides are flat when I wake up but I just take my olive oil rub all over and pull the sides out with my fingers and pick the roots to fluff it and that's it. Hair is completely dry.

T-shirt dry your hair first after styling. Then sit under a hooded dryer, just don’t use hot air. Your hair can still dry on the low heat or cool setting but with high speed and you won’t get heat damage.

I used to wear 2 strand twist, but now it's Wash & Go for me, I'm in the South now so limited cold weather but I have multiple texures in my head, so the front is finally trained to wave up, the side and lower back is extremely dry & napps up to 4b & c, the crown only waves and curls on the ends beautifully.. I can't get it to shine, or stay soft after it drys.. Should I continue to use gel, it seems to be the culprit, but without gel it just drys but the curls are Not as defined.. I have a mxture of my parents hair, Irish Mom & Strong Black Father (no pun intended).. I chopped it last year but it grows like bad weeds and I don't want to cut it any more. I have always had healthy hair my last stylist told me he could put a Cadillac with my hair, and he kept it healthy but 2020 came & I do it myself. I work hard on it but the sides & the back cause real concern, it's dry & tight and not user friendly.. Advice Please.. Oh yea I condition it a lot without Shampoo as well, This video is so old I hope you get the message..

I am sorry I disagree. Wash and go on 4c hair daily is a bad idea. It leads to too much breakage and small hairs coming out. I am 4c and when I tried these daily wash and go my hair was at its worst.

MsNaturale Michelle the small hair is shredded hair, your hair sheds everyday. We notice it more because our hair gets caught on itself so it seems like breakage.

MsNaturale Michelle, there will be some shedding but you should not have handfuls of hair. I no longer comb dry hair. I wet and detangle in the shower everyday. I have been doing this for three months and the results are great. Seeing the length and it's looks healthy and shiny. I'm very kinky so when Anthony talked about Jeri curls in another video the light went on and I realized he was right and my hair is thriving.

Not true for everyone. I have 4c hair and only when I started the daily cowashing did my breakage finally completely stop. I can actually cowash and twist and have only a few strands of shed hair in the shower (as opposed to a ball) and NO short broken off pieces all over my palms while styling. This actually works amazing for me

sleep messenger no, you don't have to comb everyday. If you do a WNG every day, or every other day, you are detangling your hair with the conditioner, I finger detangle, so you usually don't need to use a comb (or finger detangling) because your hair has no time to get tangled again. I find my hair gets very tangled if I go a week between WNGs. I have 4B w/some 4C and I don't use heavy gels when I was n go.

ok so I understand that the kinkier the hair the more moisture it needs. so say for an example its Monday and I have hopped in the shower to re wet my hair and condition it. after rinsing the conditioner out, I will then apply my leave in conditioner and hair gel. then allow to air dry or use a diffuser or hooded hair dryer. so lets say Wednesday, I will do the same with the same routine. i can see myself doing this but its not convenient for me especially with the drying because it takes forever for my hair to air dry. even after 8 hours my roots still be wet. i usually have to diffuse. i do have an upright hooded hair dryer that's still in the box. i just never opened it because when i got it i was still relaxed and never opened it. now i have this apartment and still haven't opened it because i felt like it will take up too much space. maybe its time for me to open it so i can speed up my hair drying process. i work night shift so if its the day to re wet my hair, the only thing im thinking of is going to bed honestly. if i could add hair gel to may hair without doing the shingling method i would be doing great! i tell you what i did the last time i re wetted my hair. i used the suave coconut conditioner and applied to my hair in the shower once it was wet and detangled with it. scrubbed my scalp with the vanity planet scalp massager. rinsed with cool water afterwards. then i took some gel and slapped it on the top of hair and raked it through, tilted my head over and added more gel, then quickly separated sections and add more gel in the middle sections and shook my hair and was done. the coils were defined but my hair was frizzy within two days because i didn't shingle my hair. i didn't re wet my hair for several days because i had to work. so my hair eventually dried out. im off several days so imma put this to a test and see if sitting under the hooded hair dryer will help me out on my nights i have to work. i do have type 4 kinky coily hair. i big chopped in dec 29, 2017. I used to have a jheri curl when i was about 12 years old. and i remember spraying jheri curl juice on my hair throughout the day and at night i had to sleep with a shower cap on my hair to keep my hair moisturized lol!!! Moisture is the key!!!!
