    Excellent, I have often wondered how and why these things are distinguished. A fascinating look into how paleontology works. It doesn't hurt that an Ichthyosaur is the state fossil of my home state of Nevada.

    "Were going to be resurrecting another genus of Ichthyosaurus"....😳 I had to rewind that and pay attention to context, my imagination got a bit too excited and was going all Jurassic Park 😄

    I wouldn't be surprised if the cause of their extinction, was caused by their version of a bothersome bipedal, land lubber, that killed absolutely everything.
    If they were still around, we'd be the reason for them dying out in a short time.
    Our species has a talent for finding a way to eat everything.

    Around 49:55 the question arises from which land animals ichthyosaurs evolved from. A wide gamut study looking at all available candidates provides ichthyosaur ancestors back to Devonian tetrapods. The proximal ancestors include Xinminosaurus, Thaisaurus, Wumengosaurus, Mesosauria + Thalattosauria, Pachypleurosaurus, Anarosaurus, and more basal marine diapsids extending through Claudiosaurus, Galesphyrus, and basal archosauromorph diapsids. More details here: www.reptileevolution.com/reptile-tree.htm -- Otherwise, what a great talk!

    I call them hipster dolphins. They filled the same niche dolphins do today but did so before it was cool ;)

    Wait- so this one doesn't seem to be about the life-and-habits of icthyosaurs as much as about the process of fossil research?

    hi,
    thank for sharing. I am hoping to find some information about tale bones and the swimming method, base on the tale, and the change of the tale's bone position from bottom half of tale to top half the tale (from fossils to now days species);
    can you direct me to some paper, or even give me some key words for search ?

    Progression through curiosity, no one needs merit nore titles to do research.

    Exceptional talk on Ichthyosaurus and its various species. Dr. Lomax leaves dangling the question of 'what is an ichthyosaur?' That was answered here: pterosaurheresies.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/the-origin-and-evolution-of-ichthyosaurs/ and is fine-tuned here with the addition of many more taxa: www.reptileevolution.com/reptile-tree.htm

    How on earth can you continue calling them 'reptiles', when they clearly were not!

      Once a reptile, always a reptile. All you need is an amnion layer surrounding your embryo. That means humans are also reptiles. Family tree here: www.reptileevolution.com/reptile-tree.htm

      Ichthyosaurs definitely were reptiles.

      @@wasd____ Like Ichthyosaurus genus , reptile is a waste basket now and needs to be reexamined but it is a considerably more huge work than only work on a genus.
