Good video, my strategy is building a type set first in whatever condition I come across for the price, and then slowly upgrade the examples that needs to be upgraded :)
I do find myself upgrading some coins from time to time when I see one being sold as an absolute steal, but I definitely wouldn't get replace ancients as the previous coin can still add to the value of your collection, and it could also serve as a really cool gift or a coin which you can handle more roughly as a conversation piece.
Slowly making a small Roman collection might expand into some Greek too I’ve been coin collecting for 3 years. but only recently got into ancients I’ve always loved Roma history good video!
I downsized, by selling off what turned out to be secondary pieces, but upgraded, by keeping my nicest coins. An intermediate win? They include a lovely Good Very Fine, Piso Frugi denarius. I once saw a top grade example, but just couldn't see the value for money in such an awfully high price. lol. : ) I am still stunned at the die type of my lesser coin. I'm happy.
Great video! I’ve upgraded many times, but I collect primarily American coins, 19th & 20th century. I upgrade based on grade, strike, originality and eye appeal.
Great video- although since I take your 'get the best coin you can afford' to heart, and thus far it has served me really well, I doubt I'll be doing much upgrading because of it ;) I definitely agree with the 'be your own curator' idea- it's your collection, and it's supposed to bring you joy, so let that influence your choices more than some other person's opinion and some letters. I don't look at grades at all- I study the coin itself, and compare it to others to decide if it's less-good, as-good, or better than average, etc.; it's a big part of the fun of numismatics 😁
Torn about worn verses very fine , Nice to think of a more worn coin having to have circulated back in the day and a very fine that was just stashed away.
very inciteful episode would it be possible for you to speak about prices? like what we might expect to spend on various examples, such as you're presenting? I'm fairly novice at this sport, and am eager to learn. just don't trust my judgement and impulse purchases. Thanks Aaron! Orest ps, I'm still searching for my first "Athenian Owl" ... hoping to buy from you.
Ancient Romans wore that coin by handling it, shame to let it go. I do occasionally upgrade coins, but I don't get rid of the old ones usually. I also argue it might be better to buy more coins that are not as good than to buy "the best coin you can afford". A lesser condition piece is just as much an authentic artifact as a nice coin. Crappy coins have their place and if you collect them you can build breadth. Nothing you said is "wrong" but there is an equally valid counterpoint to ALL of it.
i upgrade my collection on a weekly base😁 among last one's florian "silver" very rare one 🤩 & solidus, theodosius the second 😬 very rare variation, beautiful strike 🥰
My problem is my tastes are too demanding for my budget to even bother starting.. These tiny coins or 1s where you can hardly make out the designs due to so much wear, dont interest me at all. Atm ive decided to not bother until i can afford the kind of coins id be proud to show off , enjoy myself. And in the meantime can learn a little bit.
"personal museum curator" what an amazing and such a true statement!

And I've been collecting ancients for 20 years... so I don't know if it's fair to say I just haven't matured to that point yet...
nice, I have Antoninus Pius with a modius
High chance you wont be upgrading much if you collect Greeks 😂😢
