I've had this Volca for a few months and I'm just really starting to get into it. The more I mess with it the more I love it. Great demonstration of what this little sucker can do. Thanks!
I'm new to the volca bass and this was just the crash course I needed. Thank you! I would love to see a follow up with midi and some other advanced topics.
Excellent tutorial and catchy jam. I like it. A neat trick I would like to mention is holding the function button while adjusting the LFO rate it will cycle through time divisions of the tempo. A very fun easy way to change up a sequence with only a knob twist.
There are very few people who are still using these Volca´s after more than seven years - and who know them inside out and continue to break new ground with these influential boxes.. great stuff!
I just got a Volca Bass. Out of all the tons of videos I've seen, yours is the best! I completely understand your instructions. Your video is my go to while I learn the Volca Bass. Thanks bunches.❤️
@15:56 didn't see that coming. this device with a kick and a bit of reverb behind is cooler than i thought. I'd hate to hear what it sounds like with an external sequence as the note source.
The bass has lots of power hidden beneath a really simple surface. I love that you can sequence each DCO separately, thus tripling the number of potential onboard sequencer memory slots. If you mute/unmute the oscillators as a sequence plays you can switch melodies or basslines within a track without having to use those precious additional memory slots, which is great for live sets.
Hot tip: they are awesome on road trips. Sync them all together with long cables and share them around. Buy a cheap mixer so you can feed the audio through the car stereo...
WOW.... now i will have some fun time with my volca setup. I just bought a set of four an i think its pretty awesome. Kick, FM, Beats and Bass. THX for your tutorial. I wish u all the best! 🎧🎶🎹
Thank you for your time. I am trying to get into creating analogue music. I will be ordering the Minilogue xd. I appreciate you helping me understand what all the parts of the synth does. I gave you a sub. Have a great day.
Thank you much for this! Right at the 13:47 mark when you changed to a square wave I believe? But man you can really HEAR it right before you added delay. Nice work! You’re really pretty btw too 😬
Very cool tutorial and demo - I knew about this box for years, but always thought of it primarily as an "acid box" and didn't expect it to have such depth, esp with regards to sequencing.
Thanks for the video. I'm musically challenged but I'm trying to pull some tracks together for some games I'm writing. I have pretty much all the Volcas at my disposable and starting to play/learn.😍
Thx Cristina, was amazing tutorial…. I realised I bought too many different units… it’s better to focus on one and REALLY get to know it properly to reap all of its benefits- thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge. Hope we’ll see more videos on your other equipment when you have time ?
Synths are so addictive lol. I’m thinking about getting a volcabass now and then some effects pedals and I should really have a nice little beginners setup.
thanku very straightforward vid.I just had a noob question . I attemted to record and no playback. any troubleshooting advice? This is the best vid tutorial on this korg.
Firstly let me congratulate you on a super tutorial. I just ordered one to go with my volca sample. Secondly your voice should be for hire if it isn’t already. I’m in the UK but have visited 14 states in the USA and I’m still not very good at identifying accents (you could of course be Canadian but I think I’d spot that). There is so much quality in diction, inflection, intonation and all round delight. So where does the voice and accent hail from please? Many thanks. Cheers. Lee
many compliments for you tutorial. i have a korg volca bass and korg volca sample 2. which other korg volca machine is more advisable to play along with the volca sample2 and volca bass? Could it be the volca drum? Consider that I have the Korg Electribe 2 and the Mininova Novation. Many thanks
I want to record midi from a sequence i made on the volca bass, in short i Cant because it doesnt have a midi out and I cant afford it, would you be so kind to tell me which notey are exatly on each step starting from the left C? It would make my life easier?
This is really great! Best Volca tutorial :) I have two issues...1. The interconnect cable isnt working, tried a bunch of new ones, the sound goes out as soon as I touch the Volca. 2. I followed your instructions and always unable to delete anything. Any suggestions anyone? tysm
Thanks for this. Watching yours and another channel’s tutorial on this wee beastie has convinced me to buy one. I was tempted by one of the many cheaper 303 clones but this thing seems so much more versatile. New sub here, peace ✌️
Hello, I used the Valhalla Room reverb for this, which is a software based application. It's really good--you can find it here: valhalladsp.com/shop/reverb/valhalla-room/ Also, please see my other video on how to use the Valhalla Room. ua-cam.com/video/p9iAQ1hmKm4/v-deo.html
SO funny when you said 'not exactly a Mozart melody' - the musical piece was actually losing a lot of steam since then, but later on I could tell you're quite creative! Thanks for this tutorial - this machine is more complex than meets the eye!
The reason I got one of these in this was more to use it as a ribbon controlled similar to the ribbons on the old Yamaha CS units and some of their Electronic Organs built around the same time. For a time I played one of these in a Blues-Rock band called Trickki Vickki and the Mississippi Leg Hounds Occasionally Vikki would get a little bit too "Diva-Liie" and I would respond by using the portamento strip to make what she disparagingly called "Toilet Sounds" as a reaction!
Hello this is a great video! I have a question...do you know if there’s a way to make the volca bass play in 4/4 time so I can play my detailed melodic bass line sequences that will play in time with my other volcas when synced?
Hi, 4/4 means that there are 4 beats in 1 measure. The Volca Bass loops 1 measure devided in 16 quarter notes(= the 16 steps). Your bass line will sound way better when usuing slides, if more steps are used. Use the sync cable or midi in to have other gear in sync.
Newbie looking for help! Got a Berhinger RD 8 and volca bass. I have the midi out from the RD 8 into the midi in in the volca bass, just like this video. They are synced, however, when I play the drum machine, the volca starts making noises in time with the drum machine, however nothing had been programmed into the volca bass. No idea what's triggering the bass to make sounds, any ideas, I can have the drum machine paused and I can make patterns and then press play for it to play in time, but would like to be able to program as in this video
if you have midi out connected to midi in, then the RD8 is sending whatever midi you play in to any instruments connected to it (aka the volca). Look for a way to only send midi sync messages instead of normal midi note messages, such as the sync input on the top left of the volca bass. The reason why this person has midi in hooked up without that happening is that she's not inputting any midi notes, so the volca doesn't play anything except what she programs into the device.
Great tutorial for understanding the basic functions, got me into buying a Volca Bass BUT what made me write this comment are actually the rings, they're awesome, are they 3d printed by any chance?
Awesome video! Very informative thanks.. I had prior to this video already decided on a Behringer TD-3 over the Volca Bass/Nubass as for a bass synth because the ACID sound (so great). The more I watch videos on these the more I hear this distinct and different sound from the TD-3 +++ 3 oscillators(may have to get one of these as bass #2 (~_~))
Love your style, would listen to/watch these kind of tutorials all day. Come back to UA-cam!
I know you made this some time ago and it appears you are no longer around…however from me to you Thank You this was really helpful.
Best tutorial I've tried yet. Your experience with it along with the relaxed manner of your tone really made a difference.
thx :)

Awesome tutorial. Appreciate the notes on subtlety and the usage of fx along with it.
