I never comment out of habit and that's a mistake because every single one of your videos has helped me growing as a Tekken player, thank you so much for what you are doing for the community
Yeah I learnt in T7 to just accept this is one of the most toxic butt-fuck irritating communities in the gaming industry 🤷♂️ Just enjoy the game with your friends and through the positivity of UA-cam content creators (specifically UA-cam because Twitter and some Twitch streamers are clinically insane)
Blue rank: Is when you understand your character to a respectable level and are busy implementing their specific gameplan during matches. Also Kishin & Bushin specifically are when you'll start finding matches against Tekken Kings and above who will begin to shut down your hard earned character gameplan with even harder earned "Small Tekken". You'll start seeing your setups and strings recognized and punished forcing you to train in, and understand, "Small Tekken" before you can start up your character gameplan This imo, is where REAL Tekken growth happens
Yeah I noticed recently that they often don't know my setups but still manage to punish most of my moves.... it's giving me mixed signals honestly Oftentimes their defense is so solid that my offense becomes a detriment to myself.
I dunno i feel like maybe american blue ranks are not as good as europe. Because i dnt see how u can get 2 kishin etc without being able to play "small tekken" for me small tekken and punishes set up big tekken 🤷🏽♂️ or maybe I'm better than my rank. But still blue ranks ahould have some pretty good fundamentals. But some charachters carry you because no one knows the matchup
@@zer0cx110 yeah being in tekken king for almost a week now ive learned that matchup knowledge becomes a lot more of the deciding factor of the match. I find ill go on good win streaks and get close to emperor if I run into drag, steve, nina, and victor due to my comfortability in my knowledge of what they will do. (not to mention the characters ive played and gotten comfortable with piloting myself) Where as if I run into raven, yoshi, claudio, reina, leo, or lidia (just to name a few) I get intimidated by my lack of knowledge in the matchup and it leads to losses and potential losing streaks if I run into them back to back.
@skwadboss Interesting. I'm a TG & from South Africa and 50% of my matches are from Africa so I don't know if there's too much of a difference between the regions, I always felt the skill levels were relatively universal until you get to TK and above
I wish more people tried to decode the intermediate experience. Its the Wild west out here and we're still waiting for the railroad to come through lol thanks phi
I think its typically you are good at one or two thing but fail at others, and if you cover everything its basically top ranked stuff. It also require a lot of character knowledges, basically general generic stuff aren't enough anymore and you need to dive into specific match up or even down to a specific setup, learning their options and knowing yours so you don't pick a "always lose" option.
Got into tekken 8 one month ago (my first fighting game) and your tutorials are so good!!!! after 1 month of playing I managed to hit the orange ranks. Thank you for all those great vids. (Especially the lili tutorials with lilly pichu hehe)
10:50 "There's a shame I feel in beating someone without leeling like I learned anything" That's such a great quote, indicative of a great mindset! Don't play to win, play to learn!
Phi starting to get haters just proves that this content is so excellent and well thought out that people have to start grasping at straws to be negative. Keep doing what you do PhiDX you are a pillar of the FGC space. Not just in Tekken but overall ✊🏾
I'm a blue rank player. I feel like my main issues lie in executing on what I intellectually know I need to do. I can break 95%of throws in practice mode, but break maybe 15% grand in match. I know a lot of strings that can be ducked or stepped or low parried, but can rarely execute in a match. I think my mental stack gets overloaded easily, and I end up falling back into bad autopilot habits, and tilting a bit when I can't execute on the knowledge I have.
I think its exactly what he is talking about in the video you just need to get more comfortable in the match so you can focus on those things and once you do you will be able to implement the knowledge.
That’s the secret my guy. After upper blue, even the worst of the worst will have 90+ Appeal, which signifies they are using almost 100% of their moveset. Gold and Up is trying to overload you with information and break down your defense because everybody at that level for the most part has full throw break knowledge, knows how to negate scrubby strings and gimmicks, good movement, etc. but you can shut that down if you overstack their expectations of what comes next. You will get out of blue once you learn to ANTICIPATE more than READ what a player will do.
Hey, Phi. Keep doing you. I know this community is starting to give you a hard time but just know that what you do for us who DO respect what you do LOVE what you do.
Tekken will always have its crybabies, you have helped turn my childhood memories of T3 having no idea about KBD or wavu into genuinely learning the game I've loved so much. Thank you always PhiDX
In my experience, "using your frame traps" is something I tell most intermediate players. They understand that frame data exists, but don't understand the concept of turn taking, or using frame disadvantages to their advantage with options like parrys and movement. It has really opened the doors for many of the people i've worked with.
Tekken 7 I bought the definitive addition and was extremely put off by the high learning curve and large cast (legacy games are intimidating!). Tekken 8 is the first game in the series that got me to jump in and want to learn, and a huge part of my success so far (about to hit purple ranks w/ Yoshi) was this channel and the resources for learning the system mechanics and core gameplay. I wouldn't be playing good ass Tekken today, if I didn't have an awesome teacher like you. Thank you for everything you do for this community!
I like this guy that you're training he ask some pretty good questions and says pretty relatable stuff😂. Pt 1 he talked about doing the right things and holding alot of shit (which can be true at times) and you broke down how he'd rather hold his mash vs holding back too long. In this 1, He ask a curious question of what do Tekken characters want? And you explain the Matrix to him again by saying "Whatever you're getting hit by is the real problem, not so much the character" Love the engagement and information on both sides 👏🏽
I've been having a tough time at Bushin because there's suddenly SO MUCH to learn per character and all that.So this vid definitely helps with leading me in a direction!
Finally hit Tekken King on Claudio after learning so much from your content. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your knowledge to help others grow. Time to grind out these gold ranks 🥊
I’ve just got into the Red Ranks and see that my ‘Spirit’ went up (in all aspects), retained my ‘Appeal’, but my attack frequency went down from S+ to S and is going lower. My defence still sucks tons of ass despite knowing what’s coming mentally. I haven’t been playing consistently to go up the ranks. All I’ve been thinking is how to answer enemy game plans, but thinking makes my reaction slower and I’m hitting my 30s now. My reaction time is no longer that good. Am I complaining? Nope. It’s fun fighting those similar ranks to me. I feel no ‘spirit’ to rank up despite the game telling me I do. My defence will go up with experience and mind games levelling up. I know what to do so I’m just going to try reducing mistakes over time. That’s my way of raising ranks.
I am 47 and between Tenryu and Mighty Ruler. Yeah our reactions might be getting slower but we can play the patient game and punish mistakes. My defence needs a lot of work too as well as punishment.
Blue player (and pushing for TK) reporting in. Love your videos, Phi. I find it interesting that frame that "people got to blue ranks differently" concept by framing it specifically around this idea that each character plays differently and not that each player approaches the game differently. Two good friends of mine are Red and (recently promoted) Purple who both play the same character, and we all play with a friend who's Tekken God. We all spend a lot of time talking about how, the three of us below Tekkon God, all approach the game so very differently. I would be super interested in some sort of side-by-side comparison of two separate matches by two players of the same intermediate rank, breaking down the things they're doing right in their general gameplan and the areas they can improve. Keep it up!
That's a really good point about intermediate tekken. Everyone has learned something, but there are a 1000 things to learn and everyone is free to engage with or ignore any aspect they choose. I came to Tekken as an older gamer who never played fighting games and it was very difficult for me. For years I was flailing around trying to familiarize myself with such a deep system. Now I'm between low purple and blue and there are some things I'm pretty good at while in other ways I'm still incredibly inept. I still lock in 10 frame punishes 95% of of the time because it's more reliable than trying to choose a better i12 or i14 option. I'm mostly pretty bad at reaction checks. Other people at this rank, their deficiencies are all over the place. Some people don't block punish ANYTHING but can flash duck like crazy. Others don't even know their BnBs but have decent defense and reads. A Mishima who does everything except use an electric. Yesterday there was a flowcharty King who didn't seem to know anything except his own offense but also had a perfect KBD. It's nuts out there. Oops this is too long.
Phi I love these intermediate videos. There seriously is a lack out there of content like this. I would really appreciate some advice for Tekken king - Tekken god players. Just reached Tekken emperor a few weeks ago and looking to get over my recent plateaus and understand what skills are needed to level up!

I just hit blue rank with my Raven, this is perfect! It feels like im just reaching the point where I'm no longer being mostly carried by matchup inexperience. It's gonna take a few months of grinding to climb, but this will help!
Your intro reminds me of how League coaches in my experience tend to focus on laning phase. They'll tell you it's because that's where most of your problems are, and that if you Lane correctly the rest of the game should click, but in my opinion that's only half the story. They aren't wrong, but I think that at least half the reason they do it that way is because it's what's most efficient for THEM, so they can get on to the next client. Most of the time it probably doesn't matter, but on the other hand, sometimes you make mistakes in the laning phase and still have 20 more minutes of game to play. Anyway, sounds like intermediate Tekken has similar clarity issues
Funny enough another one of your videos got be from Bushin to Tekken King. It was the video about you trying out Street fighter. I don't know why, but because I took a break from Tekken and started working on ranking up in SF6, when I came back my reactions were 10x better!
PhiDX is tekken Jesus at this point. Homie here is slogging through all the negativity trying to put out quality stuff for us. Respect here Phi. Respect.
Ive been waiting for some advice on specifically blue rank gameplay. Red taught me how to be aggressive, purple taught me how to be defensive, But now im hardstuck at fujin and need to focus on punishment, ducking highs, and sidestepping. I dont want to be a top 1%, but i know im capable of being more than a fujin I play bryan and its hard sometimes
Phi, I'm a Reina main and I'm struggling with mental. Specifically, I get nervous in ranked no matter what I do and it causes me to think less. So I try to not go into autopilot and play the game, but the nervousness turns into tilt when I don't know what's going on (unfamiliar matchups, or frame tramps, etc), and it's a really annoying cycle that gets in the way. I get mad at myself for not relaxing and thinking more clearly and being nervous, then if I get a moment to breathe and if my opponent isn't cheesing I can play and understand where I'm being outplayed and even say 'nice' when I notice a good play by my opponent. However if they are cheesing that moment to breathe quickly goes away and I feel robbed which makes me mad at myself for not being calm enough to deal with the stupid cheese. It's a very vicious cycle with some breaks here and there if the match is actually normal (not common at my ranks, I'm just below red rank). I found myself forgetting some moves I used with Reina when I first learned her (took it very seriously), and even my combos drop almost all the time now (and my electrics are far less consistent).
I find Nina easy target for my Kuma because of the 10 frame counter, 2,1 pokes and df4 poke, it stops most of their pressure game and allows you to do yours if you want. Or keep backdashing into pokes but that's not very sustainably doable in Tekken 8 aggression and in bears.
Random question. Who do you think are the 3-5 scariest characters to be stuck at the wall against? Love your drills series btw 😇 I’ve been playing tekken as a newcomer for 2 weeks and I’m about to breach into red ranks. I’m hoping to only be in red for a few weeks maybe less. One of the best pieces of information I’ve received from you is that this game is button based not movement based which helped me change my mindset from trying to replicate gameplay i had been used to seeing (I’m a newbie but I have been a spectator of T7 for a long time) to playing to T8’s strengths and I’m on a pretty decent win streak rn.
I know exactly how he feels when he he talks about the Tekken God Lidia not rematching. When they really beat you it feels condescending, but you never know what is going through someone's mind. Or maybe they just needed to sleep.
No heat Dash if blocked. No chip damage without heat. Make launch heat dash insta tornado. Make safe high power crush heat engagers -10 or at least increase recovery frames on whiff. No more chip damage at 30 hp Allow mods to be sold on shop
I feel like he was askinhg for something totally different initially, and you answered something else. He was asking for the different character's general gameplan, and he was right. Kuma wants to be in a HBS mix-up, Alisa wants to be in chain saw stance. Lili wants to be backturned and do her mixups. Those are the simple gameplans of each character. But knowing this won't make you play against them any better, you need to punish and defend properly.
Ggs do that bear I was on the rank grind I knew he didn’t know the matchup so I was just steamrolling him because he was low rank I was tryna fight people das goin give points
I just hit blue rank with Victor and Azu and I was devastated to learn when you lose 3 times in a row you lose 1,500 points… I’m like yeah… time to lab and do quick matches for months before entering rank again
I know getting booted from the rank you just reached sucks, but consistently getting players around your skill level will make you improve way faster. From my experience the casual cue is either complete beginners afraid of trying ranked, or pro players afraid of losing their rank. Very little in-between lol
Stuck in those ranks shows you Fujin= the game starts gettin serious! Rajin= there is still huge gab to bujin Kishin= you almost Made it to a "good" player but damn the bushin rank is hard Bushin= welcome to small tekken where you will get punished for the most misstakes... Not every Misstake but now i starts getting serious for real
It’s not just this game. I just started playing guilty gear and the constant whining in the comments is exhausting especially when the game is fun to me. It feels like every community is just so extremely negative for some reason
Thank you so much for everything you do for this community
FACTS!!
Fr 🙌🏾

Thankyou for not complaining i really enjoy this game but the negativity in the community is draining
The people that enjoy the game need to speak up, I fed up of the people moaning about this game, I enjoy it.
then play another game, lmao
The reason you have a game you enjoy in the first place is because people speak up when it's bad.
Really, you owe them a thank you
The game is so fun when there isn't a bxxch in your ear telling you it's not

Unwritten rule 1. Always rematch unless lag is terrible. Rule 1.1 winner of first match waits for loser to press rematch first
really loved this set of videos, cheers!

This is some incredible Tekken content.
Phidx your an amazing individual thank you for all you hard work man.
How do I send in matches or submit my username for you to analyze my replays directly?
I know exactly how he feels when he he talks about the Tekken God Lidia not rematching. When they really beat you it feels condescending, but you never know what is going through someone's mind. Or maybe they just needed to sleep.
Fujin is where I go 3-0, they adapt and then I go 0-3, then final set goes 5 rounds where either I destroy them or they destroy me.
FINALLY I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
19:29 what is the place for db2 as a -15 low with low damage and no CH properties
WAIT THE DRAGUNOV AT 15:00 THATS ME THATS ME!!!!

Send an email to bamco or something
Thank you phi I need more blue rank videos cause no I’m stuck in raijin lol
I feel like he was askinhg for something totally different initially, and you answered something else. He was asking for the different character's general gameplan, and he was right. Kuma wants to be in a HBS mix-up, Alisa wants to be in chain saw stance. Lili wants to be backturned and do her mixups. Those are the simple gameplans of each character. But knowing this won't make you play against them any better, you need to punish and defend properly.
You basically just said what he just said word for word
"This player has experience with Super Smash Bros. Melee"
Oh sweet! I wonder if they're a figure head in the community...OH SHIT IT'S SLIME!
Literally when he said melee I was like "oh shit I know slime has been talking about Tekken on the yard I wonder if he knows this person-oh shit"
I got to fujin thanks to you!
Ggs do that bear I was on the rank grind I knew he didn’t know the matchup so I was just steamrolling him because he was low rank I was tryna fight people das goin give points
Hey phi how can i get a training session with you?
How do I get a coaching session?
I dont get it why do some people are so toxic on you. Thank you for everything you do especially your tutorials
Blue rank for life
Great vid 👏🏻
Great video 👌
I just hit blue rank with Victor and Azu and I was devastated to learn when you lose 3 times in a row you lose 1,500 points… I’m like yeah… time to lab and do quick matches for months before entering rank again
I know getting booted from the rank you just reached sucks, but consistently getting players around your skill level will make you improve way faster.
From my experience the casual cue is either complete beginners afraid of trying ranked, or pro players afraid of losing their rank. Very little in-between lol
PhiDx You should do a series where you see how far you get in rank with special style on 😂
phi looking out for me I'm on the cusp of getting Kishin and I just know this video about to either get me to tekken god or back to battle ruler lfg
this helped ME. and i’m a victor player lol
Funny... my Kuma is still stuck in Bushin...
"Cause he's freaky" lol
great vid
Stuck in those ranks shows you
Fujin= the game starts gettin serious!
Rajin= there is still huge gab to bujin
Kishin= you almost Made it to a "good" player but damn the bushin rank is hard
Bushin= welcome to small tekken where you will get punished for the most misstakes... Not every Misstake but now i starts getting serious for real
Literally stuck at Bushin
I'm just sitting in Blue rank. Til they fix Rank.
Mandatory good comment for the algo
You never talk about Kaz
It’s not just this game. I just started playing guilty gear and the constant whining in the comments is exhausting especially when the game is fun to me. It feels like every community is just so extremely negative for some reason
More slime episodes please
please do green rank next
Excuse me purple ranks , I’m blue rank.
Phi teaching the unspoken rules with this one. Legacy Tekken players sad ASF right now..
I am a blue rank player and I still consider myself a beginner
i hate blue ranks (im blue rank)
anyone else feel like the level of blue rank in T8 is alot worse than blue in T7?
