  • On Saturday, June 22, 2019, the entire Antarctic continent celebrated the one holiday that every station here celebrates together - MidWinter. Midwinter Dinners and Parties have been around for over a hundred years, dating all the way back to Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and has been a tradition ever since. This year at the South Pole, we had a particularly good celebration full of fancy drinks, samples of Old Antarctic Explorer food, midwinter boxes, and an incredible dinner. So if you want to see everything from the set up to the end of the dinner, stay right on this page! 🙌☺️

    I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

    It's just amazing to me that in the middle of a continent which is supposedly uninhabited, you can have a large building complex where people can party in their shirt sleeves, living a modern lifestyle.

    This is fascinating, it looks like any office party at any random office building. You completely forget that just on the other side of those walls is one of the most inhospitable places on earth, where you will die in minutes without proper protection.
    But I imagine thats the whole point of social gatherings like this, that they are quite necessary for morale in a place like that :)

    Hey Victor, looking so dapper there in your suit. Happy midwinter!!! It's great that everyone comes together for a celebration like this for midwinter, which is an exciting time of year where you're at. The menu looked yummy. The drink, especially with the smoked ice cube, interesting. I loved the special table and food prepared in honor of the explorers so long ago, which would have been a big feast for them back then, and hearing the story and significance of that specially prepared table. So, midwinter. Does it bring happiness for some, because the sun will be returning? And does it bring sadness for others, because it means that their time there is getting closer now to having to leave that beautiful place? And which is your feeling about midwinter now that the celebration is over? Happy or sad, or a little of both? Can't wait to see what you got in the boxes. Back to wearing your hat and frozen beard-cicles. 90 degrees here and humid as heck here today. Could use some icicles right about now. Stay warm and stay safe. :-)

      Ahh thank you so so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and sharing the experience 😊 But yeah, it really is a special day and everyone has an amazing time ❤️
      But yeah, as far as how it makes people feel, it’s definitely mixed! Robert, the astronomer who has been here for 15 winters, is on his last this time around, and I think he’s sad that it’s halfway over. Personally, I’m pretty excited! It’s been a great winter and there is more great stuff to come, but I’m also really pumped to get back to the real world! I have a lot of exciting things coming up ☺️
      Once again, thank you so much!! 😊

    We had this same tradition aboard nuclear ballistic submarines in the US Navy (called "half-way night", midway through a deterrent patrol) although we had steak and lobster (who ever heard of leg of lamb & lobster?).

    that dried fish called "taranka" or "wobla", and extrimely good, especially enjoying with your beer. pure northern food. there different types of fishes so it tastes differently, but some are literally a delicacy and cost more than a prime steak.

    What are the age ranges of people work there? What’s the percentage of men and women?

    • @GoneVenturing
      @GoneVenturing  4 роки тому +3

      Age range is pretty wide. I think the youngest we had was like 22 and the oldest was late 60s?
      And the percentage of men to women isn’t great at Pole during the winter. We had 37 men and 5 women. Sadly that’s pretty common. However, McMurdo summers are a lot more evenly split!
