    • @sonicboy678

      Japanese has 26 phonetic consonants and 5 phonetic vowels. English has 24 phonetic consonants and 20 phonetic vowels.
      It's not hard to see why the transition from one to the other is so difficult, and that's only scratching the surface.

    • @nessesaryschoolthing
      @nessesaryschoolthing 7 років тому +31

      @sonicboy678 That makes sense. For instance, that's probably why she confused "it" with "eat". They're very similar if you can't pin point the subtle difference in vowel sound. Same with "awrs" vs "ours". Very subtle.

    3:33 That is the best example of the difference in sentence structure between English and Japanese I've seen. (Japanese is Subject-Object-Verb: "He is you falling in love" vs English's Subject-Verb-Object: "He is falling in love with you")

    • @alexeysaranchev6118

      Imagine having the word order affecting the information that you're expressing, and the words in simple sentences can be put in every order almost always. It's how Russian is, I can only pity those few brave souls who have enough free time to try to learn it being a native, say, English speaker. Something like:
      He you loves = He loves you
      He loves you = He loves exactly you, not someone else.
      You he loves = The emotion he's having towards you is nothing, but love.
      You loves he = It's exactly him, who loves you.
      Loves he you = 1) He's the one who loves you 2) You silly, he loves you, and you don't know it (depending on tone)
      Loves you he = You don't even know, but he loves you.

    • @GraveUypo

      GraveUypo you him love (in Japanese)

    • @oodjee
      @oodjee 5 років тому

      Technically, it would be more messed up in Japanese than that. It would be:
      "He is you with love in fell"
      "Kare wa kimi to koi ni ochita"
      Prepositions come after the subject or object, and the verb is at the end.

      知障 is pretty offensive word in japanese. IT NOT SAME LEVEL AS "BAKA". chinese and japanese are different language even if they use same character/word. I hope someday chinese people learn this and stop spamming 知障 to AI-chan.
      btw, instead use 淫乱 is way better much. ( ͡º ͜ʖ ͡º)

    This is a great perspective for native English speakers. Its kinda neat seeing it from the other side. When I am learning a new language, I often try to think of how a native feels if I tried speaking their language. Also, I can understand why English is so difficult for native Japaneses speakers and vice versa. I'm currently learning Japanese on Duolingo as well. And it really is a powerful tool to use if you take it seriously.

      She didn't put a space between the comma, and "I'm", as for why it was wrong, it's possible that since the font is sans serif, they will put a lower case i instead of upper case, since I and l look the same. And they don't want to confuse spellings for anyone unused to non romanized alphabets.

    English is my _first_ language, and I couldn't hear "milk", and thought she said "no, I am not buying" rather than "no, I am not fine". I think _I_ would not do very well at this app / game. : (
    Makes me feel a little better about my Japanese study though. I do the same, trying to speak Japanese. Mostly the right words, in completely the wrong order. XD
    Phonetic "spelling" of katakana and hiragana is _much_ easier than English, because you speak how you write, so long as you know if it's a "Japanese" word, or a "Western" word, mostly... Until you get into Kanji, anyway. (I'm not good enough for that, yet) In English, am I having "phyche" for dinner or am I having "fish"? ; ) Unless you learn English as your _first_ language, it's _very_ hard to tell. ^_^
    I would write some Japanese, but this keyboard is not set up for it. Isn't that a great thing about smart phones? It's so easy to change the keyboard. :D I love it! But I hate writing comments on the UA-cam app, so I'm on a PC. : \

      bobsobol English is FULL of phonetic atrocities. The letter "c" is a redundancy to the letters "k" and "s", the letter "q" has a mandatory incorporation of its phonetic root (u), while the letter "x" has no definite phonetic root but still normally requires s vowel invocation prior to its usage (except for prefix "xeno-" words and the word "xylophone"), and then there's all the crazy shit that "y" gets up to. And that's just single-letter phonetic nightmares.

    • @bobsobol
      @bobsobol 7 років тому

      +Andrew Timothy: I found a Windows .exe file? I don't use Windows on PCs though... Mac, BSD and Linux, mostly. There's an old XP machine _somewhere_, but I wouldn't let it near the internet... and how much sense could it make of UA-cam if I did? XD I _could_ install OnBoard and the regular Japanese keyboard layout, if I did it enough, but I'm usually on mobile so... Would probably be easier to pull up the Character Map and click off glyphs in there as a one off, but I _do_ like the way Google and Apple OSKs (and physical Japanese keyboards) build up the character as you type.
      +NotAGoodUsername360: Absolutely. Of course, the Latin alphabet was never designed to represent Anglo-Saxon. Anglo-Saxon runes were. But just as it's important to know if you're writing a native Japanese word or a "western" word in Japanese, it's important for English _spelling_, to know if you're writing a Saxon, Breton, French, Latin, or Greek word... In English. Why is cow meat "beef", and sheep meat "mutton"? (because Saxon peasants raise khaus, while their Norman masters only _eat_ boef) Once you understand the origin of the word, and how it was _historically_ transcribed into Latin script, the reason for odd spellings becomes clearer. But that's a silly amount of history to learn, just to write a language.
      ... Then again... 1006 _basic_ Kanji, and 2136 if you want to read a newspaper! XD "Swings and roundabouts." ; )

    • @bobsobol

      +ClockworkClegga as previously stated, I don't have Windows _anything_ at home. (I have to deal with that cr*p enough at work, I won't suffer it in my home)
      So I've added Japanese, and everything in this sentence is typed using that layout. So far, the only difference I've noticed is that the apostrophe is on shift-7 rather than the apostrophe / at key. In other words, I now have it (click En from the notification area on the top right, and Add-Layout, and I've added SCIM too "Smart Common Input Method", but I don't see that it's done much) but I don't know how to _use_ it. XD
      That's the nice thing about OSKs, the layout changes right before your eyes, and it's instantly obvious how to use the new keyboard... If you switch layout (I've used Japanese IME ... and Korean, because I needed to type Korean for an international project] in XP before, and didn't understand how to use that either) it's far from obvious how to achieve your end. I'm not getting the little box beside the input area that Windows gives you though. If memory serves, pressing keys changed the glyph in that box (seemingly randomly, to me who doesn't know any layout but UK Qwerty) until you press space, then that glyph gets entered. This is different. It's probably fine if you're used to a Japanese keyboard, and are struggling with a western one for a bit, but it's _not_ fine if you're used to a western keyboard, and need to input characters not present on your keyboard.
      I've had Dutch users admit to giving up and just plunging in a Dutch keyboard to their English laptop so they could talk to their family back home without having to scratch their head over where anything is mapped. I could pick up a Japanese keyboard on eBay or so too, but I should probably just practice handwriting a bit longer, and remind myself of the stroke orders and such. It's almost 2 decades since I studied, and I'm just kinda picking it up again after all that time. Maybe if I had Windows on a Surface with the stylus, I could do both, but I'd still rather use iOS or Android. (I _hate_ Windows)
