This is a good illustration of how selling Venom as an anti-hero was a dead end. He is subjected to the same blame-anyone-but-yourself logic that justified him hunting Spider-Man and he doesn't reflect on it at all. Strangely enough he even takes partial responsibility as if that Grey person wasn't an idiot for infiltrating the gang in the first place. It seems like a lot of writers were subtly criticizing this direction while being unable to grow him as a character.
