It looks like to me our best is when we fuse tradition and modern, Ethiopian and foreign. The trick is to know both sides very well. When it is done by mediocre, it is ugly. When done right, Listening to it gives us the melody of Ethiopian music and the sophistication of jazz sound a la in the west. It is better than the components. I hope we don’t just do once and by just one artists and forget it. It must be picked up by other artists and to becomes a musical genre not only in Ethiopia, but in the world.
I would look into the producer, Bill Laswell. His label, Axiom, has a lot of great dub music as well as modern fusion. The album Hallucination Engine by his group called Material is maybe the closest I could suggest.
I would suggest Miles Davis - Panthalassa and Pharaoh Sanders albums Message from Home and Save Our Children, all mixed by Bill Laswell (who mixed this album by Gigi). You should also listen to Gigi's self-titled album, the original mix.
