It probably helps that it came out when most of us were kids and didn’t really notice it’s flaws and then as we grew older it casually grew into meme hood with us to the point where it is now: an all around fucking banger
Honestly though, my view of film as an art form has grown so much through the lens that you've guided me towards. I'll watch any video that you take the time to make and probably check out or at least consider any movie that you think is worth mentioning. Thanks man, keep up the great work.
Dr Strangelove was just added to Netflix, and I watched it solely because of how well done Breadsword’s video was. Also The Cat and the Hat. Both masterpieces.
Yeah he actually storyboarded SHREK 1 to be about an Ogre that spends the entire film trying to rescue a princess and free his swamp of intruders only to realize in the last scene that he's been dead the whole time, the princess is his bed-ridden little sister who doesn't know where he went, and the swamp is purgatory
I really appreciate the movie's pop culture and modern day society references blended into the setting. Like Fiona's childhood poster of "Sir Justin", the Cops parody "Knights" that our three main heroes are showed on and of course the fast food drive thru that Fairy Godmother's carriage goes through. It's not only amusing but a very charming world.
Serially overanalyzed? Inexplicably entertaining? Painfully nostalgic? Sounds like a breadsword video Seriously amazing job, I still don’t know how your style can be so distinct and entertaining after only a few videos.
I JUST GOT THE KNACK BABY Seriously thank you so much though!!! This is so nice! I want to frame this comment. If I could I would tastefully frame this nice comment and hang it in my home. I want you to know that.
Not only is it a great follow up to the first movie but it has the added bonus of having one of the best musical finales or maybe just film climaxes of any movie
I also love that this is a superior sequel that requires the first to work, and improve off of, but isn't at all slavish at reusing or revisiting the beats that made the first function.
Words flow out of your mouth like poetry, breadsword. Never in my life I would've guesses that the expression "sustains the phosphorescence of its predecessor" is talking about Shrek 2 (even though it is a masterpiece, no irony here). Keep up the great work! You belong amongst the greats.
This video consolidated my undying love and appreciation for Shrek that has been present since my early childhood and increased alongside my comprehension of the world. Thank you breadsword for opening up a new window to the beauty and depth of Shrek that is so often overshadowed
You had me at Treasure Planet, and cemented my appreciation for your insight and ability to put the pieces together with Kurosawa/A Bug's Life. If I can help make it so you can keep helping more people understand the glory film making has brought to the medium of storytelling, then I shall my friend. Keep sharing with us what makes you tick, your mind is wonderful.
I never really stopped to consider it... but it is actually so obvious. Shrek 2 might just be the perfect sequel. While watching this video I guess I could say my mind was blown, and not because I learned something knew, but because I was reminded of something I have known for years. Thank you for reminding me of why I loved Shrek 2, thank you for making me realize the perfect sequel exists and that I love it. Probably a good thing Dreamworks realized they could never top Shrek 2 and didn't attempt a Shrek 3, can you imagine how badly they could screw it up?
You know, I happened to watch this recently for the first time in a decade, and it was so much better than I thought it had been. Shrek 2 deserves this attention. I love the idea of you doing more quick focused videos as well. Keep up the good work BREADSWORD!!

Side note: Shrek’s human models in general are seriously underrated. Fairly realistic in detail, but just enough to actually give the characters really good facial expressions that feel realistic. Its overall aesthetic makes it feel like you’re a part of the film. And thats AMAZING!!!
I mean seriously man, just when I think I couldn't possibly love your channel more. Bless your soul for preaching the true love for Shrek 2, and as always, keep em coming :)
Honestly though great video. Don't know if I'm interpreting anything wrong, but I love the way it feels like a lovingly satirical look at something built on satire. A video so clean and eloquent, with classical music playing in the background, praising the traits of a movie that relies in no small part on humor about bodily functions and raunchy jokes that go over the kids heads. Yet at the same time all the points of praise hit home and really do lead to a deeper appreciation of the movie. Works both as a legitimate video essay and frankly a very funny, seemingly over-analysed, video about Shrek. 10/10 breadsword. Keep it up
THANK YOU ANTI-MAGE OF MANY KIND WORDS! I am humbly in your debt for making my day (night actually) with your comment! You hit the proverbial nail right on its head! With this series in general I knew I wanted to pair all of the films to classical compositions, but it struck me so immediately that Shrek and the compositions of Mozart are both complete juxtapositions of one another and truly kindred works! Chaos and elegance, low brow and high. Thank you tons for the kind words and even more for the insightful interpretation of my work :)
dude, you blow my mind every time you put something out. How on earth you made Shrek 2 not only sound beautiful, but like an artistic masterpiece, is beyond my comprehension. Like... I can't get enough of your videos. Shrek is one of my favorite series, and hearing all my reasons for loving it reconfirmed by you in this love letter is just amazing. Keep being awesome. ♡ you, Breadsword!
I like Big Joel's take on Shrek 2 where he points out that every main character has to make a big change to achieve their goals, from Shrek turning human, to Prince Charming pretending to be Shrek, to the king turning back into a frog.

I think Prince of Egypt is a truly incredible and bold debut feature (or, intended to be debut feature, at least) of DreamWorks to drop and when I look back at it I can't help but feel that it set the stage for their crazy streak of back-to-back classics much better than A Bug's Life did because it didn't relegate itself to softdrama or dampening the shock of its tension with jokes.
