There are so many ways to handletter and when they are all called "hand lettering", it can be confusing to know just how the look was achieved. In this video we'll go over the 4 main types of lettering and see them demonstrated. (*note: Style 3+4 are the same style but broken into 2 different categories*)

    I had my first hand lettering class last night. I am so excited to learn how to practice. It was recommended to go on youtube. I subscribed to your channel. But don't see your name anywhere to reference you. But I will check out your website too. My first class was with an artist from Trader Joe's. Did you know that they have about two artist per store that does all their creative hand lettered signs in each store. In this day and age of computer art and mass produced signs, it makes me happy to know this.

    When you compared the lettering with the dual brush pen to the crayola marker, I loved the effect from the marker much better actually. You could see a better distinction between the thin strokes and the thick strokes than with the brush pen. So that looked like “real” calligraphy to me

    for anyone using a brush pen and is struggling with thin lines, just lift up the pen a little.
    practice your transitions and you should be pretty good :D

    Wont your markers fray?
    I hear that extremely loud noise and i feel likeits just going to break.....

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  7 років тому +75

      These markers definitely fray less on good quality paper. I personally use the HP Premium Choice Laserjet paper, but when I use regular printer paper they fray like crazy! But these markers are designed to take a lot and they last me quite a while, so long as the paper is good! As for the squeak, it's not quite as bad as it sounds, it's just going directly into the camera mic. But I know that is super common with Tombows! Some people love it & some people feel like it's nails on a chalkboard.. ha! Thanks for watching!

    Very informative video. I didn't realize that hand lettering in not traditional calligraphy or better it can be more free-style than the classic calligraphy schools. I am definitely using this for future reference. I also felt sympathetic towards the exploded pen part. I have ruined many of mine and that was way before starting to experiment with writing for a more artistic result...

    While using a dip nib pen, I would dip into the ink bottle or transfer it to an ink well. If you submerge the whole nib it hold a lot more ink.

  • @Tippel3
    @Tippel3 6 років тому

    If you actually would fill the reservoir of the nib when dipping it in the ink, instead of just putting it just on the tip, you would be able to write 3 times as much, without re-inking your nib and, depending on the nib, you also get broad downstrokes and more line variation very easy, because you have enough ink and a consistent inkflow

  • @mayuun2
    @mayuun2 7 років тому

    hi, thanks for the vid!
    for nib pens you can try dipping your pen deeper into the ink. the small holes in the nib are supposed to work as ink deposits, so the ink is held there by superficial tension and flow down when they "open" as you press the nib against the paper and then you don't need to dip the pen as oftenly.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  7 років тому

      You're welcome! And yes! I need to get an actual holder for my ink because the dish I'm using is usually what I use for watercolors and it's too shallow to dip without dumping an entire bottle of ink into it! Any suggestions on where to get a good one? Thanks for watching & for the tips!

    • @mayuun2
      @mayuun2 7 років тому

      How to Hand Letter ugh, sorry, I am a very cheap person, so I usually use the ink bottle itself, which is not great especially when you are halfway through it and it gets shallower and shallower... 🤔🤔

      Haha! I totally hear you - which is why I'm still using a kitchen dish ;) I will have to try and find something though.. I always make a mess when I use the bottle!

    • @acnhtwice
      @acnhtwice 7 років тому +2

      I use this jar: www.paperinkarts.com/ourjar.html
      It's really cheap and once you're done using it you can just screw the top close and store it with your other ink to use again later (so you're not wasting ink you haven't used). I normally pair it with sumi ink, which doesn't really have an option to just dip into the bottle.

    Fun (not really) fact: When I was just starting handlettering (modern calligraphy), it was hard for me, so I wanted to do faux lettering. I tried and found out that I was too lazy to write the words and color the downstrokes to make it thicker. And that is why, ladies, gentlemen, anyone in between and besides, 5 months later, I can do pretty decent handlettering.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 років тому +4

      Hello! Yes, that's totally ok! You really don't HAVE to know cursive to learn handlettering - a lot of the letters that I write are similar to the way they'd be in cursive, but not all of them (like b). Handlettering is more about turning your writing into a form of art. The examples in this video are just a few different common ways, but there are no rules that say you have to write a certain way. I would start by practicing your alphabet, figuring out what you think looks nice & trying to start connecting some of those letters together. ua-cam.com/video/bXZRv4yqjsU/v-deo.html Here's a link to a playlist with lots of videos that address FAQ that people have when they begin lettering. I hope that helps & good luck!

      You should get a handwriting workbook and work out of that, you can get them online or at the teacher store or art store. They have a similar working/teaching style to how we learned to write in kindergarten preeschool

    I have experience in fine Calligraphy, with specialty Calligraphy pens with metal (thus not flexible) nibs. I have always loved handwriting and now, hand lettering. I’m now using the Tombow Fudenosuke pens for small areas, and Tombow Dual Brush pens. I’m practicing like crazy to create a 3-D collage “of my son’s life’s journey” for when my son graduates from UC Berkeley. I’d like to include hand lettered poems I’ve written, quotes, photos, etc. I would like to know, is it easier on the hand & wrist to hand letter on an inclined surface or flat surface? What would you recommend? I have permanent nerve damage in both hands, so if an inclined surface is recommended, could you recommend an easel-type surface? Thank you so much for your videos. God bless!

      Hello! I personally prefer to write on a flat surface with my arm resting on the desk. I try to write more with my arm gliding rather than moving my wrist to create different strokes, if that makes sense. I do use an inclined surface sometimes, but it hurts my wrist so I don't have any recommendations in that area - sorry!

      Have you tried drawing the letter in reverse? I.e. pull up when a rightie would pull down. It changes everything!

      What we call the "oblong nib" was designed for lefties. It's that one that sticks out the side that she was talking about. So if you wanna try it, use an oblong nib and it makes it a lot easier. Right-handed people just use it to get a different angle and line from the nib, but if you as a lefty want to try traditional lettering, it's a must-have.

    I think maybe if you changed the bottom part of the f so it goes down and to the left and around to the right instead of the other way around it would look less like a weird B.
